Zelda LTTP isn't a RPG. My first was Dragon Quest 1, got for free with a subscription to Nintendo Power that year.

I just realized I can't remember...
It was either Dragon Warrior (had Nintendo Power as a kid so this is likely), Final Fantasy (strongest memory of this one as a kid) or Miracle Warriors on the SMS (played at a friend's house).

Pretty sure it was Final Fantasy Legend 2 on the Game Boy, which was apparently a rebranded SaGa game. Not really familiar with the SaGa games outside of this one though, and I really wish the DS remake was brought stateside

I got Dragon Warrior (Quest) with Nintendo Power!

I did not care for it at the time. Years later I learned to love it.

yeah, it's Pokemon for me. Then Paper Mario 64.

In fact, I don't think I played a non-Nintendo RPG until Runescape in the mid 2000s.

Fallout 3. I was introduced pretty late to the RPG genre, unfortunately, but haven't looked back since. Amongst the most relaxing and therapeutic of game genres for me.

I remember playing Ultima: Pagan when I was very young but couldn't make head nor tail of its gameplay elements.

This. It's not a great game, per se, but I was still bummed as hell when the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini only included it in Japan.

Taskmaker, a shareware and very weird/tongue-in-cheek Ultima clone (I think) for the Mac, based originally on a DIY TTRPG. Came out in the early 1990s, I believe. It was surprisingly fun and full of secrets (and introduced me to grindy RPG exploits, like using the immortality in the game's tutorial to repeatedly open and shut iron bars as a way of leveling up my Strength stat to maximum before beginning the real part of the game).

Also, when you die in the game you go to Hell and can escape either by evading the demons in there and making your way to the exit or (eventually) by killing the demons and escaping. Then you can go pick up all of your belongings wherever you died.

Probably a shareware game on PC, there were a ton of them. First I can definitely remember is likely Pokémon Blue.

Also, not to beat a dead horse, but I'll never understand how, despite being the flagship series of the action adventure genre, Zelda gets lumped in with RPGs. Adventure of Link maybe, but that's it.

Because it's not, despite over the last decade there being this "movement" to make it one. It was always an Action/Adventure game.

the zelda series was considered an rpg series in the 90s too. i don't know whatever movement there was in the last decade. but i think jeremy parish makes a pretty good case for the original (and second game) to be considered rpgs. not sure about the rest.

I don't know where you've seen it called that, but in the 90's it was also an Action/Adventure game...

You can find a ton of these kinds of list too that always had it as an Adventure game until more recently where some rando called it an RPG and a bunch of others just latched on to it. Most likely because of last gen where simply having a whiff of anything remotely "RPG like" instantly made a game "an RPG" even if it wasn't really.

First time i played a rpg as in for some minutes in someone else's house was either Parasite Eve, Pokémon Yellow or Fallout 1.

First RPG i really played, like spent dozens of hours and gave a shit to characters and story, was Lunar 2 on PS1.

I think it was Secret of Mana. Me and my brother borrowed it from a friend at school, playing it in coop for hours is one of my favorite childhood memories.

It was Pokemon Gen 1. The 90s craze was a wild time for the franchise, PokeMania was everywhere.

Xenogears back in middle school. Was stuck on what I was supposed to do in the first town for a while and almost stopped playing it. Glad I pushed on and ended up loving the game.

FFVIII. Had a friend in the 7th grade that was all about FFVII and would bring his strategy guide and stuff to school. He played a trick on me and had me thinking the game was like 8 discs. His enthusiasm made me hype for VIII and I played the hell out of it.

I legitimately don't know. Maybe FF1? I think I played some on my brother's NES. But first I beat or at least played substantially? No clue at this point.

It's cool seeing all the Phantasy Star posts in here. It was mind blowing stuff back then. Doing a more casual playthrough with the Switch remaster last year was a lot of fun, too.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin cart game on the Mattel Aquarius when I was around 10. First person dungeon crawler with turn-based battles. The real love for proper turn-based RPGs didn't kick in until the PlayStation and stuff like Alundra, Wild Arms etc., never had anything I'd call close enough to an RPG for the Spectrum or Atari ST.

Icewind Dale. In hindsight I liked Torment and Baldur's Gate way more, but I'm still fond of this game to this day.
