First of all i actually think the project is cool, Google is probably the best company for this kind of service and if they make it right this will be their next gold mine no doubt, but seriously this reveal was soo weird and confusing.

1) Who was this conference for?
- If it was for developers why making it public? Just work in the background like Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo always do each gen and reveal the product only when it's done. Developers want to know how committed is Google to this, if it is worth investing in this platform, if Google believes they can have a leadership in this industry.
- If it was for us consumers, the presentation was really poor. We don't know when this thing is launching, what we should expect at launch in terms of catalogue, what games to look forward, pricing...

2) Games-wise there was very little news we didn't know already. We already knew they can stream AC Odyssey with decent resolution and frame rate with Project Stream. They kept mentioning that game so many times during the conference and Doom, i suspect because they don't have anything else.

3) First-party situation is already looking bad. They showed two tech demos which by the way they weren't even that flawless, no games. Are they keeping those secret for future events? Jade Raymond announced on stage as the head of Stadia Games and Entertainment she will create new first party studios working on games, even with external developers and third party partners, big and small, but does that mean you are starting this now? Development of AA/AAA games take 2-3 years minimum, what are you planning to do in the meanwhile?

We don't even know if there is a real game behind these demos.

After this, i think Google really needs to sell us Stadia better at I/O and most importantly E3, with game announcements because if they don't show up at gaming events like E3 and Gamescom, then they will never reach the meat and potato of this industry.

Personally I think they are making the same mistake Microsoft made when the announced the xbox one.

This felt like a tech demo keynote and should have been advertised as such, there was nothing of note for gamers/consummers.

Seemed like it was aimed at developers and given it was at GDC that would make sense.

How about.......what was the point in Google revealing the Stadia with no pricing info?

I thought that could have been okay if this was an actual conference mainly for developers, considering this might probably launch by the end of the year, they will have other occasions to reveal the price and other key informations to consumers.

But again, this keynote felt that weird in between which you don't know if they are speaking to you or to a developer, and most importantly they showed soo little.

I think it's a good strategy

Hype the project with the reveal and after momentum gained, reveal games, price, etc...

It's a Developers conference. It's about advertising, sure, but to the developers so more people will make games for it. GDC is mainly about new tech, new engines and such.

yeah i came on the forum after work to post about it. i thought there would be one or two "oh shit" exclusives/timed exclusives. maybe that's for later, or maybe they're sticking with this being an 'alternative' above all else. i dunno, just thought it was weird

To get developers excited, since it's at GDC. Would have been nice to see more content, as it got tired seeing multiple presenters say "we're working on stuff... but we can't show you", but I get what they were going for.

It was aimed at developers. They're saying "hey, here's what we're doing, come talk to us if you're interested in making games for this". The consumer stuff will come later.

It's a pitch to developers. They streamed it since obviously not everyone can make it to GDC and they want to get as many people as possible developing games for it.

Attract developers to build a library. I'm sure Google will do a big blowout for consumers at E3. This was a GDC presentation. It wasn't aimed at us.

Despite the lack of info, I still felt it was a bit of a drag.
Shorter presentation with less fluff would have been a better move in my book.

Probably gonna get a blowout in the summer

This felt like a pitch to developers.

Yeah to me it almost felt like.

"We literally have two third party games, zero from internal studios we haven't even created yet, we hope we can attract more developers with this keynote".

But then what games will this thing have at launch this year? It takes time to make games, are they going to launch the thing with literally only AC Odyssey and Doom Eternal, games you can play on other platforms before?

This forum is not the audience for the Stadia.

The audience for the Stadia is the 9 year olds currently playing Fornite and Apex Legends, people in Asia & Africa only with mobile access, and so on, and so forth. The type of person who has the luxury of being able to afford a $400-$3000 gaming system and $60 for games isn't the goal for Google.

Was it aimed at developers who don't know what happened to reader, hangouts, and countless other loved (by "not enough" users) products?

Apart from Google throwing $$$ my way, why would I develop for this thing?

I think it's aimed at shareholders

Not every dev can afford to go to GDC.

Yeah I agree; a platform with no games is definitely not intended for a gamer forum.

It was in the presentation. Low effort porting to gain access to a huge potential market - you can have your game on "everything" (technically not everything but still a pretty huge market plus "free" promotion via youtube).

I believe when Bill Gates presented the original Xbox at GDC he showed more third parties on board than what Google did with this, and most importantly we already knew Microsoft was working on a big first party franchise (Halo), and that was in a time where conferences were really for developers and investors first, consumers second. Now it's the opposite.

I don't fully buy the "it was meant for game developers only" argument as they literally had a teaser trailer for this, myself, and I assume everyone else in the project stream beta, received a "HEY COME CHECK THIS OUT" email a few minutes before it started. They very very clearly meant for players to be watching this as well the developers. If it was meant to be just for the devs they shouldn't have hyped it so much to the general public.

If they intend to launch in 2019, you'd think they would at least have some games they could announce.

Doom Eternal is possibly a 2020 release, so we currently only know of two Stadia titles for this year (Assassin's Creed and Tomb Raider).

Agreed. So much of the negative response to this seems so rooted in gatekeeping. This is opening the door for more and more people to have access to video games.

Huge potential market on what basis? They have to buy market share (e.g. exclusives or by price point and convenience) to demonstrate that!

Exactly, if this was for developers, it would have not been public at all.

Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony all do their presentations for developers and retailer partners behind closed doors.

High speed connection in Africa is not a thing, and by the way no BR game shown here. (which would have been a far more appealing demo than AC Odyssey we already knew it works)

It shouldn't have been live streamed, or should have been made obvious it was a stream for developers only.

It just setup the system for jokes about Power Point and data center porn.

Really bad first impression for sure!

It's a developer conference, this cannot be stressed enough.

And for the naysayers, they already have over a 100 studios developing on the platform, and thousands of engineers using it to develop games on it. Just enough of this game announcement entitlement, this isn't E3, you are not the target audience as a consumer.

GDC is for Devs.
The most interesting thing I took away from the presentation was Google using Stadia as a multiplayer backbone.
Sequestering traffic to within their internal network is a game-changer for real.

They left out critical information for developers and anyone who would want to be involved, such as how they'll avoid latency issues. It was a bad conference for developers as well as consumers.
