What was the first and last VHS tape you bought? I had a bunch of VHS tapes bought for me when I was very young, stuff like Thomas the tank engine and fireman Sam, but the first one I remember buying myself was The Sound of Music, which I guess would have been around 2000 or 2001. The last one I remember buying brand new was probably… valiant. Which I think was late 2005/early 06.

I don't know how anyone would remember their first. The last was The Blair Witch Project for my mom who didn't have a DVD player yet.

I have never personally purchased a VHS. I started buying DVDs in the late 90s and that was the start of me buying movies.

I saw Rumble in the Bronx on cable and instantly wanted more Jackie Chan. I only ever bought two movies Supercop and First Strike, technically my mom gave me the money for them since I was only 11 at the time.

By the time I was old enough to make my own cash and buy my own stuff DVD was blowing up.

My last one was Hellraiser from a charity shop in about 2016. I saw it and couldn't resist because my mind was still in my "Collecting stuff is cool" phase.

Obviously Hellraiser is still cool af though.

I only bought a few VHS tapes in the late 90s/early 00s, and only because they weren't on DVD.

First:

Last Tape was one of the Tom Green show compilation tapes since I couldn't find anything on DVD:

Don't judge my taste too much, I was still in my teens.

Don't think I ever bought one. The earliest VHS I can remember my parents buying was probably a Nat Geo shark special. Last one was probably some bargain movie my dad picked up well into the life of DVD.

No idea of my first (remember my first DVD was The Matrix played on my first DVD player the PS2). The last VHS I bought I think was the original Star Wars trilogy set. It's the one from before the remaster so it has none of the changes. Bought that only a couple years ago at a thrift store. I bought a VCR/DVD combo in like 2013 on Amazon brand new as well so I can still play all my tapes.

I dont know the first, but the last I bought new from a store was Star Wars Episode 1. The first copy I bought actually didn't work, had to bring it back.

Never bought that much, we mainly rented back then. But I remember buying this at HMV. It's probably still in a drawer in my childhood bedroom.

by the time I was old enough to have money to make these decisions, it was DVDs, but the first VHS tape that wasn't a Disney movie I directly asked for and got was Dick Tracy.

That said, in the mid 2000s I would occasionally buy VHS tapes for $1 at my local record store cause the TV in my bedroom had a VCR built into it, and would buy random movies or Wrestling VHS tapes if I found them. I think the last one I got was the 1999 Austin vs McMahon WWF tape in like 2006

The last we bought was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace because George Lucas originally wanted to complete the trilogy before putting it out on DVD. Can you imagine having to wait until 2005 to get the prequel trilogy on DVD?

By the time I started to get into movies our household had moved to DVD in 2000. Up until that point I either got VHSs for B-Day/Xmas gifts or we rented what I wanted to see at Blockbuster. The last VHS I bought myself was probably "The Phantom Menace". Now the first DVD I bought was "The Matrix" and I'll never forget that.

From what I remember, the first VHS I ever bought as a kid was an episode of The Magic School Bus on tape. It was the one about friction and playing baseball in a slippery frictionless field.

The last tapes I bought were these yesterday at a Half Price Books

I have several vhs but I think Pokemon vol 4 was the only one I bought by myself. Not long after, I got a PS2 and started to buy/rent dvds.

First was some episodes of Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, last I don't remember. Spider-Man, maybe?

I never really had a lot of VHS tapes though.

Hmm, the earliest I can remember is a Mr Bean set that included the Christmas episode. I watched that a lot! The Star Wars trilogy was another one.

Last VHS? That's surprisingly even tougher! I think it was The Matrix. I certainly had the VHS for it as it took a while before I got the DVD.

I certainly remember my first DVD, Mission Impossible 2.

Star Wars was released in the UK in 1982, the same week I got my first wages from my first job. £75 well spent at the time, and I still have it!

No idea what the last one was.

Don't believe I made my first home video purchase until the advent of DVDs and have only purchased discs since. So, never.

My VHS collection was mostly stuff I'd recorded, and because I mostly rented I didn't get much into buying titles until DVD hit, when I had more disposable income.

First? Blank tape for sure.
Last? Probably some anime title that I couldn't find otherwise.

I got a big order of VHS for my most recent film SUPERHOST by the crazy talented kadi video.

Gave them to the cast and crew.

Great aesthetics.

the first vhs I bought on my own was a special copy of jaws that had a bonus vhs with interviews.

s-l500.jpg

Though my first vhs was technically a banjo kazooie promo vhs that came with my Nintendo power subscription.

s-l400.jpg

The last VHS that I bought was an old star trek movie box set that only had the wrath of khan opened. Because the wrath of khan is that good.

Now if I want to get a really nice version of a favorite movie I go for laserdiscs. I like having those large album sized covers.

I don't think I've ever bought a VHS, by the time I had my own money they were obsolete.

Hmm, tough question. I know for a fact that the first DVD I ever got was The Matrix. I wouldn't be surprised if the last VHS I bought was the boxset for Star Wars special editions.

No idea what the first was. Maybe a Jackie Chan movie.

No idea on the first. But the last was definitely "Dawn of the Dead" (1978) in 2003 or so because there either wasn't a DVD yet or they were stupidly expensive or something.

Star Trek TMP for first. Last was probably some porno before I could afford broadband. Once I bought Blade on DVD, that was the end of the idea of ever looking at VHS.

First, probably an anime series like Goldenboy or Bastard

Last, I think I saw a VHS of a very hard to find horror movie that I bought for 50 cents.

I almost always just rented or borrowed. The first I remember actually buying was Curse of the Undead: Yoma as I didn't have any other way of watching it.

s-l1600.jpg

The last, I don't remember, probably something released in 2000 before I got my PS2 and switched to DVDs.

First BOUGHT is almost impossible to know, but Ghostbusters would have been an early one I remember (though TMNT 3 I know I purchased with my own money)
The last one was 100% a video called "Breaking with The Mighty Popalots" but long after VHS was a viable thing. It's brilliant and dumb

I think the first and the last VHS I ever bought myself is the same movie:

Wings of Honneamise

was only available on VHS in Germany when I bought it.

edit: just checked the german wiki page: VHS was released in 96. I bought it the late 2000s.
DVD and Blue Ray versions were finally released in 2020. :O

First: Godzilla 1985

Last: The Batman 2022
why are you posting this, as if it was nothing special?

where/why are there 2022 movies still being released on VHS?

Just realizing I never bought a VHS movie. All of them were always something my parents bought all of us during holidays.

By the time I was buying movies in high school it was all DVDs.
