They're pretty damn important, all things considered. They eat basically any decaying organic matter, their shit is nitrogen rich, and they're a plentiful, high protein food source for larger animals.

They fill a niche as eaters of anything, but i don't think they actually serve a purpose. anything that eats them would eat something else, and other things could fill that space in the ecosystem. They just happened to find a way to adapt to human habitats.

I like the first part. More mosquito chow for every creature that wants it. Drive those stupid pests to extinction for all I care. The Earth's ecosystem will adapt to their eradication.

And before anyone goes all scientific on me with a counter-argument, know that I just really really really despise mosquitoes with every ounce of my blood (heh). I just want them GONE from this planet forever, regardless of any repercussions from their removal from the food chain.
