What is the point of Goten?

Goten is the second son of Goku introduced in the Buu Saga. Since it seems Goku was going to be retired, he was brought in to serve as his new face and all. He's Trunk's best friend and half of Gotenks, who he mainly fights as. But like, what is the point of this character? He's static and hasn't developed at all and in Super, he's literally an afterthought. Goku doesn't seem to have any relation with him and he's only useful as Gotenks. In GT, he becomes unrecognizable as this dater guy, which is really lame, not to mention his awful haircut. So like, what is his purpose?

I think it just comes down to Toriyama wanted a pair of troublemaking Saiyan kids during the more comedic Buu arc now that Gohan was just about a grown man, and then like so many DB characters he gets forgotten about and benched.

It's a gag manga, you're looking too much into it. You may as well ask what the purpose of Boss Rabbit or Launch was.

The worst thing about Goten & kid Trunks is their ability to become a Super Saiyan just... because. While everybody else went through hell to achieve it.
I guess that was supposed to be some weird way to reset the power levels so SSJ1 isn't that powerful anymore, but still a very stupid way to do that.

A good majority of the Buu arc is clearly taking the piss out of the series' conventions. At this point in the manga Toriyama was burnt out and more interested in having fun with it, I think. The art style in the manga becomes more superdeformed and comedic too.

He's another proof that Goku is a douchebag. He knocked up his wife mid Cell saga and then he went all "bad things happen because I'm here, so I'm going to chill in heaven or whatever that place was while you raise our kids alone". He could have raised his children. He just didn't care. Goten is proof of that.

He was supposed to replace Goku but iirc he was poorly received so it became the Goku show again. Just like what happened with Gohan.

Goku had no idea he had another kid on the way during the Cell arc. When he arrives on Earth at the Budokai he's shocked at Goten.

He lied, he's a fucker like that. Remember he had the magic antenna of Kaito with him. I'm sure they were creeping together on women on Earth too.

Goku was dead and living his afterlife. He's not going to stay involved in his family's life at that point, until they join him.

The point was to get little adorable Goku into the series again after regular Goku grew up.
People love adult Goku, but they also loved little Goku. Double the popularity!

Somebody who should of paired up with Gohan when goku was dead in the buy arc and grown up in further arcs with pan then coming into prominence and then she takes over as protagonist.

but no we MUST ALWAYS HAVE GOKU THERE ARE NO OTHER DBZ CHARACTERS ONLY GOKU

He's a son. That's all. GT no longer counts obviously. The story hasn't moved really far since the end of Z tbh. So super is still about the main Z cast. The torch passing hasn't happened. One day it might but who knows.

Dragon Ball wasn't really written with long term plans in mind, so he was probably just created so the kid Trunks would have someone to bounce off of.

The Buu Saga was outright replacing all fighters with the Saiyans, whether it made sense or not (see Dabura considering Piccolo weaker than Base Goku and Vegeta). Goten was part of that as a new Saiyan fighter in order to make a duo with Trunks since Toriyama likes duos.

When he returned to Dragonball, Toriyama clearly regretted that though, so there was no space for Goten and Trunks, with them at best making appearances as kids rather than actual part of the main cast (even though the anime staff initially tried pushing them for a while in anime exclusive stories before giving up, since they used to be a big part of the marketing).
