Tbh it wouldn't be that hard to explain away in a series with teleporters and being able to fully digitize magical creatures into a "PC", but then it's weird they named it "Escape Rope".

The idea is that you'd be leaving a trail of rope at the entrance of the dungeon, then you'd be retracing the steps a la hansen and gretel.

But yeah it works more like a wacky teleport

It's like a classic item in RPGs

mana.fandom.com

Magic Rope

The Magic Rope is a recurring item in the Mana series. When used in a dungeon, the Magic Rope instantly returns the party to the entrance. Given by a grandfather in Topple after the heroes visit his home, the Magic Rope can return them to a place of safety. Found in a treasure chest in Gaia's...

An Abra is telepathically connected to each rope and activated upon item use.

In game - I imagine it's like things we have now where it's a digital version of a physical thing eg notepad

Head canon - Awesome rope to distract wild Pokemon and trainers.

What's more, how were they able to perfect teleport technology with the escape rope, yet Bill, who is in the forefront of Pokemon research is accidentally fusing himself with pokemon trying the same thing?

Escape ropes can't take you anywhere at will and aren't reusable. It's probably tied to the PC system, which itself is tied to the last Pokémon centre you used. That's a convenient form of travel if you want to venture for a little while then go home, but not if you want to travel between cities.

(but really, Escape Rope is just a tool for climbing out of caves and comparatively one of the least inexplicable things in Pokemon)

Tie one end of rope to a rock or tree. Bring other end with you. Explore the cave. If you get lost or need to go down a steep inclined that you are worried about being able to get back up then the rope is essential.

This is a real thing.

Considering Mount Silver, Silph Co., Mount Moon, and Lavender Tower, how truly long is the Escape Rope?

I like to imagine the spinning animation is like when you spin a grappling hook over your head and then launch it to hook onto something.

The player is just kinda dumb and spins their whole body while doing it, I guess.

I assume it's something you tie to the entrance and then work your way back. The spinning is just for fun.

I'm curious to see if the animation ever updated, but couldn't find any videos for it on youtube.

Maybe it has a really cool animation now in Sword and Shield, such a shame that there is never any reason ever to use it in Sword and Shield.

Not super long but you can chain them together. They are rope.
and the spinning and rocketing upward ... ?

Its just a graphic representation of the exit. The spinning is even a visual representation of being lost. Generally speaking caves go down so it makes sense that they would represent the exit by using an upwards motion.

They probably spin because otherwise it would look like the sprite was just walking/sliding forwards and the spin differentiates the movement.

The truth is that Escape Ropes are Pokemon too. They're called Escape Ropes. They're Grass/Psychic types that don't evolve. They only know teleport, just like Abra, but unlike Abra, they kind of spin people around and cause them to warp by shooting up into the air and disintegrating, and reforming elsewhere. They also straight up die after being using that teleport once, so Professor Oak decided not to add them to the Pokedex, and no one bothers battling with something like that.

I always assume the concept is basically throwing a rope down a hole to help a person out.

So you're basically the person grabbing the rope and pulling yourself out of the situation.

I just personally think that the character spins is like trying to cast the rope by whirling it, like a cowboy does with lasso. Why it does that is due to sprite limitation or just to save some work to extra animate it.
