It's Gex.

Him coming back basically writes himself. Instead of being sucked into a TV world, he's now in Video Games and you can have all the different themed worlds and levels making fun of different games.
One world should've a broken future city like Cyberpunk, lol. Weird glitches everywhere, forced poor performing areas, etc.

Ristar please. That's one of my top 5 Genesis games. The world settings were great, the music was great, the game mechanics were great, why don't we have more of these?

Bubsy or Gex.

But let's be honest here. There isn't a chance in hell that any of these platformers stand toe-to-toe with Mario, even with a large AAA budget and polished game.

I've long had a fantasy idea for a failed, obscure, and abandoned mascot characters to team up in a RPG to initially not be absorbed/eaten by The Forgotten but end up saving the universe and being Remembered. LOL

Casting my vote for Sparkster/Rocket Knight Adventures. 2 games on Genesis/Mega Drive, 1 on SNES. Ignore the 2010 Rocket Knight.

The world, characters, and even just his overall design were very fun and different from most, and the music (especially the main theme) was fantastic.

In my dream scenario it'd be given to Christian Whitehead and the dev teams he led on Sonic Mania, complete with Tee Lopes on music. It would be beautiful.

A comeback inherently implies a return to greatness, most of the obscure/failed mentioned in the OP and in the thread debuted in games that were D+/C- tier stuff at best (Croc, Jersey Devil, Bubsy, Aero, etc.). I don't want any of them back. And when it comes to the lauded ones like Dynamite Headdy, Tomba, and Klonoa I have, like, zero attachment to them so the idea of a big budget comeback doesn't mean much to me...

All I want is Spyro 4, Rayman 4, Banjo-Threeie, and Jak 4 DAMN IT!

Wait, what? I know a guy who has been working on an unofficial remake in his spare time, but I wasn't aware of a remaster. LBA2 ended on a semi-cliffhanger too, so I'd love to see a new entry in the series.

It's called Little Big Adventure - Enhanced Edition and it's up on Steam right now!

I'd pay any price for remasters of Croc and Croc 2. You can do a decent job getting them running nicely on PC but controller input always seems to be the last hurdle I can never make it past.

Surprised by the seeming lack of Bug! around here! Maybe he's just too obscure though ;)

Rocket Knight Adventure is better than most Sonic and Mario games. Not sure how it would work in 3D though.

Not sure to what extent Commander Keen counts as obscure, but: Commander Keen

Kid Chameleon also a strong choice
