In Las Vegas right now with some friends and bout to head to the strip. We love roulette since we can just bet on a color instead of a number and win. Any other games to look out for or everything is just pure luck or rigged against us.

Blackjack, then craps or roulette.

Unless you want to count cards. Don't count cards.

Roulette can be a near 50/50. With proper study Blackjack and poster can be a bit more than just luck based.

There is nothing illegal about counting cards and it's essentially the casino getting mad at you being good at blackjack. Anything you win they won't take from you, but they will just kick you out.

Without preparation, no, there's nothing you can do that gives you a positive expected value.

If you're good enough at counting cards, blackjack can be EV+. And if you're good at poker playing that can work out (since you're playing against other people instead of the house).

But unless you're already good at one of those, yeah, it's all just random chance, slightly against your favor. Play whatever looks like the most fun, make up superstitions as you go, ask for free drinks if you're losing.

Is there a good rundown of how you're supposed to play blackjack? I understand the rules of the game, but it seems like all these ways to piss off other players at the table if you aren't "playing right".

roulette loses money the slowest.

following basic strategy can make blackjack decently cheap to play for a while, though the odds are still in the house's favor. being good enough at counting cards to make the game profitable would require prep time, is weakened by things like the dealer using tons of decks, and would get you kicked out if you managed it anyway.

competitive games like poker matches pay out to the winners and just give the house a cut of the prize pool.

The dealer always hits if they're below a 17. since all the face cards are worth 10, that's the most common value. basic strategy kind of says "go with the odds and assume the dealer's next card is a 10." if the dealer is in the mid-teens, that means "they're probably gonna bust, so stay." people who play it safe might be irked if you take a card that would've made the dealer bust. it's not that big a deal though.

Blackjack with perfect basic strategy *at a 3/2 blackjack table* is going to have the lowest house edge, but if you deviate from basic strategy, the house edge increases quickly. Vegas has also been going to more 6/5 blackjack tables, which are terrible for the player.

You're probably better off with craps. Pass line bet, max odds. Come bets with max odds if you want more action.

Roulette has far more house edge than either, anyone recommending it over blackjack or craps is just wrong, frankly.

As a rule of thumb you split if you get a pair of 8s or aces. There may be times to split on a pair of 10s or dueces but you will need to be counting cards and keep an eye on what the dealer is showing. Hold on 17 or higher

If you are looking to minimize losses as a novice, the easiest play is Craps. Bet the minimum amount on the Pass or Don't Pass line and put as much as you can afford per bet on the Odds. Playing the Don't Pass side is known as the darkside and has ever so slightly better odds but know that you will be betting against the table.

I would just play minimum pass (let's say it's $15) and then double or triple that on the odds $30 to $45).

Check out www.wizardofodds.com for as much depth as you would like on any Casino game.

Edited to add Craps direct link: https://wizardofodds.com/games/craps/basics/

Do not go into a casino fretting about how to make money.

You won't.

Give yourself a hard limit in cash you are willing to burn, and do not go over it. It is no different than going out to a movie theater, or a concert: you are paying money to have a good time.

Casino games are endurance games. Rarely does anyone walk in, become a huuuuge winner within 10 minutes, and leave. If you play blackjack at $5 tables then you aren't going to really walk away with anything, actually you are more likely to lose it since $5 means nothing and so you will naturally play more loose. Craps or Roulette if you want to toss money and leave it to fate.

With a lot of work: Poker
With a bit less of work: Video Poker (depending on the paytable)
Fairly easy, with a small negative expectation: Blackjack (make sure blackjack pays 3:2)
Ultra easy with a small negative expectation: baccarat (banker has slightly better odds)

Blackjack can be fun to play with a bunch of friends at the table.

If you're doing well, and they change dealers, leave.

I don't expect to make any huge money or anything. I just want to make at least my money back or if I'm lucky a little more on it. My last two Vegas visits managed to make my $20 back at least. :)

Sometimes, when I go to a casino I find an out of the way digital blackjack machine and play with an odds chart like this one open on my phone:

mini-blackjack-strategy-chart.png

I'm not sure if that's allowed or not, but again I'm talking about the dinky blackjack on multi-game machines, not the actual table games with dealers and other people. I believe the odds are slightly worse on the machines, something with how blackjacks are paid out, and the chart is by no means perfect but if you stick to it you'll do at least a little better than going in willy nilly with your gut.

Your best options are playing Red/Black on Roulette or betting dealer on Baccarat. Your edge in BJ is going to be lower then the other two as you dont know how to play.

Those two games the casino will only have a 2 percent edge. So for every dollar you bet, youll lose 2 cents in equity.

This is one of many, many myths. The cards don't care and past actions are never a predictor of future events. That burn card is just as likely to lead to table wins as table losses.

It's allowed, even at tables, and I'd highly recommend it. They may not allow the phone if they don't allow phones generally, but they'll allow the little basic strategy cards you can buy from stores for $2. No reason for the casino to care, they still make money from basic strategy.

General note - if you're following the card and someone recommends you do something else, politely ignore them. The card is right.

Just go to the nearest roulette table and slap that crisp $20 on red. If it doubles then do it again. If you lose then you walk away. You're not really missing out on anything trying to stretch $20 at a casino.

Blackjack easily. Any moron can play it and you can make pretty reasonable bets playing it.

Yep, you can set the card down at the table, but every casino I've been to tells you to put your phone away.

I only enjoy Blackjack really. If you get a good table, you get the whole community vibe happening and everyones having a great time including the dealer lol.

I like to play columns and rows on roulette.

I don't think you can approach gambling with the thought "how can I make some easy money?"

One cool idea that was shared to me a long time ago was to withdraw the amount you're okay to lose. e.g. $200.

Pocket every win, and keep using the $200 you withdrew to play. Don't use the winnings to play.

Even if you lose the full $200, you'll walk away with something (barring an absolute nightmare run of course)

I remeber hearing baccarat has a really low house edge too.

Better to just put your money on red/black. Closer to 50/50 than Baccarat.

Isn't that because you're essentially betting on a glorified coin flip

Yup.

The odds for a player's hand to win in a game of Baccarat are 44.62% and the chance for a player to lose is 45.85%. The chance for a hand to end a tie is 9.53%. If you do not include the chance of getting a tie in your calculations, the banker has 51% win
odds all the time.

Best chance to win money: blackjack
Most fun with odds that are just a tiny bit less in your favor: Craps

Over time? Blackjack.

On a single bet? Bet red/black in roulette.

Pass on any triple 0 roulette games. Video poker on the strip is garbage paytabes. You may find decent ones on Fremont, ask a local playing. Just have fun and gamble only what your willing to lose.

Just have a budget and play what you enjoy.

Does it really matter if one game has a 5% house edge and another has 7%?

I usually find a slot machine with a 7 figure progressive jackpot or whatever the casino has that is biggest, look up how much you have to bet to qualify for it and do one spin. I consider it like buying a lotto ticket so I at least have a chance to win big.
