I live in Las Vegas, a purplish-blue city. And I'm a fast food junkie; I eat lunch nearly every day in one of several fast food restaurants near my work. About half of them have a TV on, and every single one of those TVs is tuned to Fox News. It's also on in bars, in retail stores, in the airport, in government buildings, in police stations, even in some gas stations. It's on in the employee dining room, in several casinos I've worked in. It's everywhere.

Why? In a city/county that went for Hillary by 10.5 points in 2016, and voted for our House representative by 14 points in 2018, why the hell is Fox News on anywhere? Much less being nearly the only channel on, anywhere there's a TV in public (aside from sports bars).

And, in my experience, it's not just Las Vegas. In my travels, this seems to be the case everywhere: Fox News is nearly ubiquitous on public televisions, except for those airing sports. I especially notice it in fast food places, because, as I said, I frequent them.

Please chime in whether that's the case where you live, especially if you live in blue areas, as I do.

But more importantly, what can we do about it? Can we get a movement going to boycott businesses that air this reprehensible channel? Can we just walk up and change the channel? Maybe all at once? Surely that would be possible, in this age of social media (which I'm not on). Reducing the reach of Fox News would be one of the most beneficial things possible for our nation.

Your thoughts, Era?

Pretty sure thats part of Fox News' marketing, so other than making a big movement out of it, enough so that companies are willing to lose money (so pretty big), there aint much to do.

it makes a lot of sense to me that fox news would line up with the class interests of las vegas business owners

FOX news is the biggest problem in this country. Yeah I said it. It's brain washing people daily. Trump would of been gone months ago if this channel didn't exist.

The TVs in bars and restaurants here in Philadelphia are usually set to CNN and sometimes MSNBC. I don't think I've ever noticed Fox News in public.

A local sandwich shop that I enjoy always has it on. It's notable because I haven't been anywhere else in this city with Fox News on that I can think of. If news is on it's usually CNN.

The nearest BK to my apartment blares Fox News from two TV sets in its dining area, and I'll never understand why. Put on freakin ESPN or something. You really think patrons of a Burger King want to be yelled at by these talking heads?

My car dealership always has on FN when I go in for an oil change or whatever. It's the only time I'm ever really exposed to it for any length of time (other than seeing like clips here on Era). I'm always astounded by it.

I mean I would just ignore the tv?

But I'm sure if you really want to watch something else they will usually accommodate if it's in a bar/restaurant

If you read news, from multiple global sources.from al jazeera to even RT*, participate in international threads, or even peek in... then stumble upon fox news. Its as if you've fell into a different dimension. Where none of the other world events are being covered, or they have some bizarre slant/conspiracy theory that isn't true. Things are stories on fox, that aren't stories anywhere else in *credible* journalism. Its just 100% Lies and spin to prop up the republican party. It really should be getting the same scrutiny as Facebook.

*RT say what you will about this channel. Their coverage is more diverse and honest than Fox news, even though its anti-western propaganda. They still have to cover the stories to illustrate how horrible the west is. But its still the same info being covered by NPR/AP. Not just pretend none of it is happening. They only share common ground with, wait for it, the russian hoax. On brand.

If you watch fox, and thats your only source of information. Yes, the world is after you and the president. 100% True.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I do. I don't have any one source for news, I try to see what lots of sources are talking about. And even if there's some huge story in America, the Fox coverage is just like...from some kind of alternative universe. It really is unreal.

Those times I get exposed to Fox News like that, it really is sort of enlightening about how my family thinks. They are sucked into that alternative reality where, as you said, the whole world is after them and the president.

As a small example of what I'm talking about, during the Russia investigation, they were all 100% convinced it would clear Trump and Hilary would wind up in prison. I hadn't even heard anything like that at all before, but they were all completely convinced that the investigation was secretly going to expose Hilary. It was weird.

Sure. You can ask them nicely or "ask" them aggressively, but at the end of the day the choice is still theirs.
Which means you can do something, not "nothing," as you originally posted. I personally once asked a small-town diner to turn off Fox, and they did. If they had refused, I was planning to walk out since I was on the road and would have found something similar ten minutes away that wouldn't have befouled my lunch experience.

My gym does this, or rather the shake place inside my gym does this. And it drives me crazy because you have to walk past the Shake Lounge to get into the gym proper.

My solution was this: I just asked if they could change the channel. And they did...

It would be on Fox news again the next day and I would ask again. And they did...

And after enough time, they stopped defaulting it to Fox.

You're the customer here, and you don't have to be rude, but you can create a bit of Supply and Demand here. Ask for a different channel, you'd be hard pressed to find a non-chain restaurant that won't accommodate you. And after enough time, they'll start to think their customers just prefer the new channel and leave it alone.

If it was in a place where i'm drinking or eating i'd ask them to change it to a game or something, if they say no then i'd leave (this has never happened though)
If the sound is off and its just a waiting room or something i don't care that much

Put the app on your phone that turns it into a universal remote and just change the channel to PBS or something.

Yep

25 years ago everyone got their news, unbiased from the same sources it was left up to themselves to make their own decision about what was right and wrong.

Now they're been told what to think and lied to about every possible scenario and reinforce thoughts and bigotry that they'd already held.

I agree above anything else in this country Fox "news" is the greatest threat to our democracy.

Not sure, but at the gym I go to, there are 2 or 3 people who will turn the tv in front of their treadmill to Fox News the second they walk in. They don't care if anyone else was watching something or if Fox News is already on a couple TVs over.

Honestly it may have more to do with Fox News watchers just being more likely to request a specific channel on a TV in a business. Once it changes most people don't care enough to change it again.

One time I asked a cab driver in Las Vegas to turn off Fox News. He complied and then proceeded to launch into a rant about why we loved socialism so much, including some homophobic slurs. Not exaggerating how fast it escalated. My only regret was not getting his info to report him, just wanted to get out as fast as I could.

Cmon, thats a big nope, you can hate Fox news, but to pretend all media was unbiased back in the day is a bit much. The media has always backed establishment candidates like Clinton & Biden over real progressives for example.

If I'm at the auto shop or somewhere, and I see Fox News on the waiting room TV, I always try to clandestinely change the channel.

That shit is brain rot

That ship sailed a long time ago when they were accepted as a news source. Any attempts now would be seen as assault on freedom of speech and journalism. Society dug it's own grave with its apathy.

Ok 30 years ago...

journalists just told facts sure there were some editorials mostly in newspapers and occasionally on the news but far and away much more fact-based unbiased information.

Bulshit wild West unfactual lying nonsense that we get from the right wing to keep their people uninformed and in a bubble is killing democracy.

regardless of how biased you may have thought it was in the past it was not propaganda as it is today.

News outlets in journalism in general kept the executive branch honest.

Now they are supporting their lies. when during Obama the media was pretty critical if they disagreed with a policy or his performance unlike any of the ass licking nonsense that we see today from Fox and whitewing radio
