Figuring out the secret of the Crystal Cave for the first time.

If the designers for that zone could have seen what I went through in there, I think they would have cried tears of joy. The initial confusion and backtracking, followed by the "Wait...is this how it works?" moment, followed by the nervous trepidation as I attempted it, followed by the terror-laced elation as I realized I knew what to do. It was the type of experience that game designers dream of creating, and it fucking worked for me.

Going through the Depths for the first time in Dark Souls 1. My stress level was through the roof even before falling into the hole which leads to the frogs. I had no idea where I was and how to get back to the bonfire, but somehow after what felt like hours I made it back.

When I arrived, a person was sitting there. I panicked and approached carefully. He faded from view. Others figures appeared; shades of other players. I joined them and we sat there, quietly. They, too, disappeared and again others appeared to take their place. I was deep below the surface, scared and lost in a dank, plague-infested sewer. But I was not alone.

Oh this is a good one. I had something similar happen and fell through the hole near the start and ran around like a chicken with my head cut off screaming for like 3 minutes before I got petrified, lol.

Didn't bother trying to retrieve my souls from that... :D

Beating Champion Gundyr in DS3 on my first try. That thing really wen't down to the wire. Honestly, my health bar looked like I should have already died and that fucker is fast!

Idk why that is the first thing I'm thinking about, but I guess that is my FromSoft moment

I still remember my first invader. Demon's Souls, late 2009 or early 2010, 1-2. I was the bignoob with the purple flame shield and winged spear and they had no shield and used a katana. Seeing the red letters warning me of the invader made me go "oh shit oh shit oh fuck" and sent my heart racing. Then I saw them. "They have no shield, they must be crazy," I thought. But I was so terrible at the game that I still failed to kill them, but I gave them a good fight (they must have been as scrubby/noobish as I was). It was such an exciting moment, I started craving the presence of invaders later on, and eventually started invading myself too, starting a long-lasting PvP addiction.

The ape whose head you just cut off with a giant sword getting back up and attacking you with the same sword, head in hand, in Sekiro.
That's a good one.

I remember this moment very clearly. I saw the "Shinobi Execution!" screen pop, and thought, "whew, I did it..... wait, why didn't an achievement pop like it did for previous bosses? Why am I not getting the Memory? Oh my god are you fucking kidding me Fro.... (the ape stirs) yeaaahhh of fucking course, you assholes!" Hahaha

Falling in a hole in the Depths only to be faced with these fuckers:

5F7E9E096645EA27890D7448F10D59389C2992D6

I then proceed to die because they are terrifying and get cursed. Didn't play the game again for a while.
How about realizing that those aren't its eyes

The eyes are the beady little things underneath

Yep, that's another great moment. After the suffocating swamp and the dreary catacombs, seeing this was absolutely phenomenal.

I also loved the dawning realization that you were going towards Anor Londo after beating Pontiff:

- First, the somewhat similar architecture, but you think, "oh, it's just typical Souls castles architecture"
- Then, the black knight archers. Like fucking six of them. But you just think, "Haha you wankers, got like six of them now huh? Cool little throwback, good memories, good times".
- Then you reach the circular room with the statue, and the illusory wall leading to Gwyndolin. "Waiiiiiit.... this isn't a throw back anymore..."
- Then you reach the switch and the elevator and you go "oh my god it's not a throwback at all it's absolutely the Anor Londo elevator" all giddy like
- And yet, even as you've known it's Anor Londo for a while, just seeing the words pop on screen with that chime sound effect, "Anor Londo", as you reach those massive stairs... yeah, I got a chill, I won't lie.

I love those games. :3

-All of Demon's Souls
-Finding the interconnected world stuff in DS1
-Listening to people who like DS2 far more than me talk about it.
-Playing DS3 at launch with a group of friends. Hinting at or sharing discoveries with each other.
-Bloodborne's mid game turn.

Edit: oh Fromsoft as a whole...
-The first time I had to rush to find a lightswitch in Echo Night.
-Playing Echo Night Beyond with a group of friends. Passing around the controller and helping them ghosts.
-Taking in the tremendous atmosphere in Kuon. Also, when you find out where all the little save boats you've been sending downstream ended up.

So many good ones all the way from Kings Field -> Sekiro. Two that really blew me away were both from Bloodborne.
- Elevator down to Ebrietas
- Transition from clock tower to fishing hamlet

Probably first stepping out onto the moon in Echo Night: Beyond. Great atmosphere. So silent and slow. It's also the first game of theirs I played.

Lady Fujiwara's boss fight in Kuon because she looked pretty cool, plus I was able to really cheese it because she got stuck in a corner.

There are two moments that stick with me. The first being the confrontation with the Tower Gargoyles in Dark Souls. By the end of that fight I finally "got" the combat and the stamina system. The second was facing Artorias. After all the build up, it was just a tragic and amazing fight. The other games had great moments too, but nothing matches the first game.

Fighting Ashina Seven Spears for 2 hours straight and honing my skills on how Sekiro truly worked.

Owl (Father)
Genichiro 1
Demon of Hatred

Demon's Souls not understanding how tendency worked and turning 5-1 pure black and having to grind through it.
Old Monk
Fighting the Flame lurker which was the most fun boss in that game becuase it was the most like Sekiro

I remember getting the first Dark Souls on launch and embarassingly put in nearly 30 hours and only got past the first gargoyle. I would get stoned and thought I'd figure it out through trial and error but I guess I just didn't know how to use my brain at the time. I didn't want to look anything up as well so I kind of just flailed. Didn't help that I was trying to level all my stats evenly.

Then my friends got me Demon's Souls for my birthday shortly after and I thought, "fuck, now I have two games I'll probably never finish." However, I chose magic for Demon's Souls which I quickly learned was just easy mode. I proceeded to finish the game in a span of maybe two days and felt like I had become a god. I went back to Dark Souls and decided I'd go melee but maybe look up how I should level characters up accordingly. Did so and went on to also finish it within a couple of days, and my new game file had maybe a bit shy of 30 hours logged in.

I guess I'm trying to say "gitting gud" was my most memorable moment with the game personally. In terms of the content itself...all of it? Beating Ornstein & Smough was a highlight for me. Also loved seeing the giant crow for the first time.

-the pivot into cosmic horror in Bloodborne.
-beating DS1 with no summons after having quit and coming back to it.
-beating Fume Knight with bare fists on NG++.
-SL1 run (no pyro) in DS1.
-helping a random person with a boss and they sent me a really kind message afterwards.
-co-oping Midir and Namless King in DS3. A fucking blast.

Haven't played many FromSoft games though. They take too much time.

One of my favorites was finally getting invaded in Demon's Souls (this was around 2017, so there weren't very many active players online), only to have my invader help me through the level instead of try to kill me. I was minding my own business in Stonefang and remember being nervous when they first entered the world and I got myself ready to be obliterated. Instead they pointed out the direction I was supposed to go and basically escorted me up until the armored spider boss fight and then waved goodbye. I will never forget that.

Getting cursed in The Depths in Dark Souls was pretty memorable, too since, I wasn't sure if it could be cured.

In Shadow Tower, getting to the boss of the Human World and watching it spring to life after you see it hung up for a while at first was quite startling. Even though I expected it to happen, it still managed to shock me a bit.

Dark Souls - realising how amazing the world design is, winning Ornstein & Smough after ~50 tries, meeting Artorias, winning Kalameet after more than 50 tries because I really wanted her tail drop. The whole game... My favorite to this day.

Dark Souls III - getting to Irithyll and revisiting Anor Londo. Battling sis Friede and Gael. Realising Gwyn's theme and moves on Soul of Cinder.

Sekiro - getting beaten by Genichiro as he taught me how to play the game, Guardian Ape fight, the absurdness of the Woo-guy, realising you can swim and dive underwater, Fountainhead Temple and Divine Dragon. God I wish we had a DLC...

Started playing Bloodborne few weeks back. I had played it earlier in 2018 and after trying dozens of times just gave up on Father Gascoigne. Picked the game again recently and failed again many times. It became an ego thing and I thought I will just beat this guy and then f**k fromsoft games, not going to play further and wont be touching any fromsoft game again. And when I finally beat him, it indeed was a very satisfying moment but whats amazing is that I am now hooked to Bloodborne...enjoying it so much that it might end up in my top 10 of all times list.

One that's always stuck with me is the scene where Hawkeye Gough snipes Kalameet.

The whole conversation leading up to it, the way all the sawdust falls off him when he slowly moves to grab his bow, and of course the way he heaves back and looses that monstrous arrow with such surgical precision - all the while being blind of course. It's not a massively significant moment in the grand scheme, but it's so well done.

The Artorias cutscene and fight just before that are also very memorable. The whole of that expansion is up there with my fondest From experiences.

For some reason people hate Nth phases, but those are some of my fondest gaming memories. Friede and Guardian Ape particularly. That moment you go "...motherfucker" is priceless.

Experiencing some cosmic weirdness outside Oedon Chapel and finding out what it was hours later was phenomenal. Same goes for the early visit to Hypogean Gaol.

Meeting and then finally beating that first Black Knight in the Undead Burgh in Dark Souls. He looked so cool and intimidating and it felt like an achievement to beat him so early in the game. He dropped his shield for me too which was a result.

Finally emerging into the daylight from the gloom of Blight Town was a memorable moment too.

The first taste of cosmic horror in Bloodborne.

I love From's games but I'm not too big on fantasy, so seeing From tackle a different genre with gothic horror slowly leading into cosmic horror was awesome.
Do sci-fi next, From.

This was my very first big loss of souls too. After defeating Capra Demon, rather than turning back to spend my souls I foolishly decided to press on. I fell into a hole and got cursed, and then died again trying to find my way back there.

There are so many moments I could choose, but one that no one has mentioned yet is coming across the sleeping dragon in the Valley of Drakes in Dark Souls 1. Now, if you saw a sleeping monster guarding treasure in a game like Skyrim, what would you do? Of course, you would quicksave, grab the treasure, and if something bad happens, just reload. But in Dark Souls? You have no such luxury. I had no idea if the dragon was going to wake up and kill me if I tried to take the treasure, and I didn't want to risk it, so I just... left it alone. It's moments like that that pull you into the experience because for a moment, you forget you're playing a videogame, and instead are thinking like how you would if you really were in that situation.

Another similar example is when I noticed the suspicious bloodstain on the elevator in Sen's Fortress and correctly guessed the danger.

Such an epic moment.
Lots of my favourite moments in AC came from playing against my best friend as it is so satisfying to tweak your mech and then get a win with like 5% of your HP left.

The like minute long VOB (is that the right term?) to Spirit of Motherwill on AC4A for me.
Just boosting across the desert until you see this absolutely behemoth fort in the distance.

There have been so many moments in these games when I've thought I've had the beating of a specific boss and then...another they launch into another phase, or completely change their moveset, and you realise that you've spent the whole fight doing a warmup for another, harder, often better fight. I hate it and yet it's also undeniably great.

That and Gyobu's introduction in Sekiro. From a developer that generally prefers an understated and minimalist approach to storytelling, having a boss ride in on a big fucking horse and shout his name and intentions in clear, unambiguous, massively over the top fashion was genuinely hilarious.

just from the pure Soulsborne stuff, the first time you ring the bell after beating the gargoyles is my big single moment. theres something so triumphant about that.

on a larger scale, the Bloodborne reveal was absolutely wild and its one of the many reasons why its my favorite of their recent catalog. absolutely insane.

I think the biggest "oh shit" moment was in Bloodborne. Wandering around the Forest dodging all those fucking snakes when THIS bastard just waddles into view.

This really swerved the game for me, which up until that point I figured it was just a "simple" gothic horror game with werewolves, beasts, and possibly vampires. But once the cosmic dudes showed up, my mortal mind was shattered with insight.

At the end of Bloodborne where you're supposed to be head to the final boss, you'll talk to the doll on the way and she'll tell you this "Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world." I always felt that she was talking to us, the players, and felt somehow related. The whole scene at the time with that soundtrack made it all more memorable

what a great thread!! so many memorable games and moments. FromSoft is just peak.

for me the most memorable experience was realizing that Dark Souls 1 has many different progress routes and i was amazed. then once again i was speechless when i discovered and managed to navigate Blighttown from the bottom to the top. those two things are peak level design, really.

Encountering TWO Nineballs at once in the last mission of Armored Core, and then having to traverse a trippy geometric vertical level of moving platforms only to then encounter two more of the things inside massive cylindrical columns.

Getting the bad ending in For Answer and having 4 Nexts fight you at once.

Encountering the massive hovering ancient weapon in Armored Core 3 that pretty much sprays missiles at you left and right.

That creepy ass soundbyte that plays over and over in the human plus lab in the first game.

Screaming at the TV when I lost to the rank 3 arena opponent in Master of Arena for the umpteenth time because it's using all of the human plus upgrades and can fly indefinitely.

Finally being able to pull off an aerial blade strike, later an overboosted blade strike, and still later a single hit KO overboosted dual stage quick boost homing assault armored double aerial blade strike at a 45 degree turn against an online opponent 30 seconds into the match, and knowing I was doing said thing as it happened. And that it was entirely a fluke.
