I've always felt uncomfortable by the notion of sexbots.

It's basically what if sex toys could think/feel/etc. Everytime the concept is brought up in fiction it usually is used to be a "substitute" for the real thing, and once the person finds a real partner, they discard the sex bot which results in the thing becoming obsessive because that was it's purpose.

Ex: Batman Beyond
that was a hilariously good ep

Eh, wouldn't use one myself but it's basically just a more complex sex toy. Nothing inherently weird about it. Like some people think fleshlights are weird. Who am I to judge?

As others have said, I don't really see the moral issue so long as you don't give them sentience. Like, there's no reason a Sexbot needs to have intelligence beyond what a high end Skyrim NPC has. Really, there's no reason any robot needs it. That's how you get robot-murdered.

There will be issues if it becomes prevalent with Sexbots that look like celebrities/real people who did not authorize it, but that's an issue separate from the Sexbots themselves (and I imagine you can already make look alikes with what's available today, and there hasn't been that much controversy over them yet, even if it's gross).

Why are the far less realistic ones less creepy? I mean, I know the answer is Uncanny Valley, but still.

Would sexbots do more harm that good? Will they drive more people to social isolation, or will they provide an outlet and prevent some guys from becoming psycho rapists?

Hard to say. But it's concerning that in the future some young people's first experience could be with a sexbot, and they may then decide to not pursue real romance. One thing these sexbots will not be able to do (at least in our lifetimes) is recreate the feeling of being in love. I've been fortunate enough to experience this many times in the past and it makes me sad that some people will go their whole lives without trying or giving up after a few rejections.

I feel like unless you are personally into it anything related to sex that what someone else does is almost always going to seem weird.

As long as no one is getting hurt its generally best not to look into someone else's bedroom.

I'd consider trying them, but they'd need to be significantly more lifelike than sex dolls for me to find them arousing.

Well, not necessarily lifelike aesthetically... anime aesthetics could work too. But they'd need to exhibit a high degree of quality in that case too.

Uncummy Valley, more like.

At some point, the tech will be good enough that this becomes a reality in some fashion, and why not? If it helps people who are either too socially awkward to engage with real people, or physically offputting, have spouses who aren't sexually active, or whatever, I can't see how it's a bad thing. There are quite a few of the doll fetishists who engage with them because of said reasons, and if they get some measure of joy out of it, then what's the harm? I find the sexual dynamics of these invented relationships a bit disturbing, but again, no one is being hurt by it.

Why stop at kiddy-sexbots?

Sheep sexbots.
Doggo-sexbots.
Centaur-sexbots.

It's a fantasy, and it's not a person.

At first blush I'd say I'd go for it but then all the practical questions arise like how much those things would cost, how much maintenance they need (those "realistic" sex dolls are incredibly fragile) and most importantly how much of my small apartment I'd have to waste on it, especially if it had no function outside of sex. If the bot could do cooking, cleaning, etc, i.e. be actually useful the rest of the day then that'd be a muuuuuch more enticing proposition. Having that bot just sit around doing nothing all day would get in the way.

Though let's be real here, any sort of advanced consumer robot is gonna be made by one of those data kraken companies and will send everything it sees to the company servers for "targeted advertising".

I'm pretty sure it's possible for people to fall in love with robots or TV characters or whatnot, triggering all the usual love feelings except obviously unreciprocated.

You get home from a long day at work, you come in through the front door and see that your life-like domestic companion bot has cleaned the house from top to bottom and has prepared you one of your favorite meals. Life is good.

At dinner you make advances towards your domestic companion bot and it reciprocates, afterall, how could it not. The advanced AI Programming has learned exactly what you like in bed.

It says it wants to roleplay; you're surprised, but ultimately go along with it.

Your domestic companion bot quickly ties you up and mounts you.

"Hey, you're finally awake....You were trying to cross the border? Walked right into that imperial ambush, like us and that thief over there."

You struggle against the ropes but it's no use.

I already have a few onaholes and other sex toys. So it is my next logical step.

I think they're weird and it's not for me, but I would not necessarily cease contact with someone who used one. Need an option for that.

Will an AI hologram near the level of Joi from BR2049 ever be possible? That's way more interesting than some robot fuck doll.

Jut remember, you have to clean it when you are done.
The bot that the OP is describing is very advanced. So self cleaning is probably a feature.

I can actually see pets being replaced by bots. You won't have to worry about health bills, or their death anymore. they will be able to mimic dog behavior very accurately by an AI. I could see this in 20 years.

Super weird of course because the idea feels so alien to us now, but in principle pretty much indifferent. A bot is just a bot, regardless of how well you program it to react as a real person. I very much doubt a bot or other forms of AI would "evolve" to the point of actually achieving "consciousness", aside from maybe an artificial and pre-programmed one. But that's a different discussion.

A real controversial question would be how you'd feel about child-like sex bots. In theory a good way for paedophiles that are at high risk of acting on their urges to not actually abuse children, but the thought alone is creepy of course.
What eeewwww no no nooo I hope something like that never happens and then what happens when they get bored of these sexrobots they will naturally be more animalistic for the real thing that's a dark path to take I don't even wanna imagine a future with that

You'd be better off buying a mannequin on eBay and sticking a flashlight thing where the real thing usually is lol we are in for some freaky shit in a couple years lol

Seems the same as a sex doll to me, just the next iteration of it. Doesn't bother me if people want to use it. I don't think we will have them in any interesting way for a long time though.

Nah, I'm good. Treating machines as substitutes for people is just weird to me. I don't even like or use smart assistants like Alexa. I'm not interested in ordering anyone around, even if they're not human.

They'd have to be phenomenally better than anything modern tech can currently create.

But I'd be all about it.

If we're talking Westworld quality robots (Minus the whole they are "sentient slaves" bit) i'd own several and never leave my house.

Hell, I don't think it would even need to be that robotic. I think it would be pretty cool to have a tablet on wheels that displayed some sort of interactive pet or companion on screen at all times.

Like an Aibo, but more digital and easier to maintain.

Wasn't there a public service announcement warning thing about this in Futurama?

Possibly, but I think highly unlikely. Also, to be clear, I'm not saying they should be sold at your local shops or whatever, to be used by everyone, but it could be used as some last-resort form of therapy or at the very least a means to get the urges (temporarily) out of their system before they'd act on actual children. Sure, there might be some who will feel encouraged by it and would afterwards pursue "the real deal", but I really doubt it would occur on the scale you're worried about.

Obviously I haven't really conducted research on this matter, so I don't know, but it got me thinking of people who are diagnosed with certain mental illnesses with potential devastating effects if acted upon. Treatments should always be the first priority, but what if that fails?

This will totally be an episode of SVU one day.

Seems like sex bots could be great for someone into furry or anime stuff. I'm not gonna worry about the whole "degenerate sex shaming" shit with it, and if they were cheap and easily stored and maintained I could definitely see myself getting one in the right circumstance (like this entire last year lol).
