This is a downside, true. But for me the content I watch/play, it's not a huge deal.
Unless you have a Yamaha YSP2700 (like me) or above, and then surround sound is amazing :)
I'm have the Sony ht g700 and love it. My ceiling is vaulted and slanted so upfiring atmos speakers don't really work for me, plus my sofa is against the back wall so back speakers are directly on the sides instead of behind. This 3.1 system has blown me away, supports earc ( connect with the tv earc port) it's plug and play, didn't have to set up or anything up on my Sony x900h, it just works.

I dont have a Beam, and haven't used one. It is quite a bit cheaper, and is older. Its also better suited for smaller TVs and tight spaces, which might suit your setup. The Arc is pretty long, and as such, will look odd if it's wider than the TV you're using it with (I'm using it with a 77" CX)

The Beam is the cheaper option, the Arc is the one that's $800 US.
Definitely on the more expensive side.
