Horror is one of the most varied movie genres out there. It can range from a zombie slasher to a mom with mental illness ruining her son and everything in between. The qualities can also range from trash like paranormal activity 69 to masterpieces like hereditary and the shining. With horror being so varied I'm just wondering what your favorite horror film is and why? Also add what horror films you usually enjoy the most and if your favorite is different.

Horror I usually like: My favorite horror films have got to be supernatural. I love me some conjuring and even the first couple paranormal's got me. Something about an entity that goes bump in the night terrifies me! Lights out was my favorite recently when it comes to supernatural horror films. Unless you found hereditary but I feel like that's more cult.

My favorite horror film: The Evil Dead Remake
Fede Alvarez first directorial debate and knocks of out of the park. Honestly I can't explain why I like this movie so much.... I hate torture porn movies like saw with a passion, yet throw demons in and I'm in love. It's such a ride throughout that escalates until the very end where the ladies fighting a demon with a chainsaw while it's pouring blood. If that doesn't get your horror juices flowing then I don't know what will 😉Anyway I've never seen the originals so I don't have that to hold this one back. I've heard their fantastic just way different tone so imma have to check them out.

So what horror movies do you typically enjoy and what one is your favorite?

To this day I will stan the hell out of the original Blair Witch. It unsettled me back then and it unsettles me now. That ending with him in the corner. Perfection.

I never miss a chance to proselytize for the Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon

Mockumentary on a nascent 80s style slasher about to go on his first spree.

Nightmare on Elm Street the original. It's kinda goofy but still so so good.

It's got to be The Thing for me. I wish there were more movies like The Thing.

What I love about it is that it feels like a puzzle that gives you a ton of audiovisual cues that you will only pick up on if you're looking for them. The way the camera pans to suggest the path a monster took, the sound of the blood bank key hitting the ground, etc. You get all these clues and you feel like you are within inches of the true answer but you can, ultimately, never really know for sure. I find it such an amazing movie to watch, and rewatch, and I'm hard pressed to think of any execution of horror I like more.

Not to mention the practical effects are some of the best I've ever seen in a movie. I intentionally never look up how they did certain things because I think there's a great wonder in not having that answer. I was so mad when Stranger Things out of nowhere said "want to know how they did that? chewing gum." They didn't even show the scene they were referring to, but I knew what they must have meant immediately. Such a bummer. Thanks for ruining that, Duffer Bros. I'm mad forever.

The Thing is the only movie I can say is anything like "The Thing." I love it.

I don't know what my absolute favorite is but I rewatch The Descent a lot. I love that movie.

Does the film Ravenous count? Making a cannibal movie as a critique of Manifest Destiny and a dark satire of America consuming everything is pretty amazing. Brilliant soundtrack too.

I prefer the original Evil Dead over the remake, that is definitely one of my favourites. Some of my other favourites:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
The Thing
The Hidden
28 Days Later
Cube
Halloween

It's not a film but The Haunting of Hill House is sublime. I love it so much and I'm not even a fan of the genre.

Dead Silence. It's not the best but I can't argue with that villain design

I'm going to have to watch the original thing then too. Only saw the new one and didn't like it so I never went back 😂

The Exorcist. The original not Director's cut. I do like the medical examination in the Director's cut but not so much the other stuff. The Exorcist is a masterpiece imo.

I've only given four 10/10 ratings to horror movies in my life, and I'm a hardcore horror fan going on 35+ years:

The Thing
Hellraiser
An American Werewolf in London
The Fly

All of them standout to me because they were so different from the genre offerings at the time, and their special effects just couldn't be matched. I place great value in unique visions with a great payoff in my horror.

Halloween
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
The Thing

Halloween is my favorite, just because of how powerful & lasting the cinematography of that film + just how brisk it is.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) It isn't even gory but it is realistic and scary and full of weird shit that makes you uncomfortable. It's perfect.

I love sci-fi horror. Don't know if Alien, Predator or Aliens qualify, but they sure did scare the hell out of me as a kid 😯

Too hard for me to choose just one.

Halloween
Return of the Living Dead
Night of the Living Dead 90
Jacob's Ladder (not truly a horror movie but it may as well be)
28 Days Later
Hereditary
Communion
Alien
The Fly
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Hills Have Eyes remake
The Descent
Paranormal Activity
The Blair Witch Project

....and the list goes on and on

Though I may have to settle with
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers 1978.

Absolute masterpiece. Anyone who hasn't seen it MUST see it.

Don't Breathe
Evil Dead
IT
The Fly
Suspiria
The Exorcist
Rosemary's Baby

While I do love traditional horror movies, the ones where they mix drama and horror together are the ones that get to me. So unsettling.

Honorable mention goes to: The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers
is God tier.

This movie was almost like the Hereditary of it's time.

So unsettling and uncomfortable. The movie constantly gives you the feeling of the characters being watched.

The cracked glass in this scene gives a wonderful feeling that not everything is alright. And listen to the goddamn music. And how you can hear the horrifying alien scream in the middle of the day, before the threat has even been clearly established but people are just too blind to even notice it? Fucking genius.

There is an early scene in the movie where a guy is just randomly running (perhaps away from something) down the street but looks vaguely distressed and it's not anything major. The lead woman notices it but doesn't even pay attention.

But the movie always reminds you that something is going on. And it's basically from the very start of the movie.

Event Horizon (Fuck you this movie was awesome!)
Puppet Master
It Follows
The Decent
Drag Me to Hell
The Shining

I cannot pick just one as these all had a lasting effect on me after I watched them and some I still find scary even today.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's one of my favourite films, not just in the horror genre. The music, realistic atmosphere, set design and performances are great.

Original Dawn of the Dead also.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my all time favourite Horror.

My other favourites include Carpenter's Halloween, Suspiria (Original) and Don't Look Now. I also have a massive soft spot for Sleepaway Camp.

Not many mentions for 80's classics here like Hellraiser and The Shining, or The Omen from 1976. Nice to see Ravenous mentioned above. Great movie, great soundtrack, great cast including Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle.

Since zombies count, I'll throw in the best movie I've seen this year, Train to Busan. It's on Netflix.
