Haven't played Fallen Order yet, but I love MHW, it's my 2nd favorite game this gen. That being said, MHW is a hard-to-get-into, complicated, sometimes obtuse timesink. Definitely get him Fallen Order. Can't go wrong with a well regarded Star Wars game that steals from some great games.

Its not even that MH is harder but I am just not sure a 12 year old would have the patience to keep playing. Like there isn't really an "end" so you just kind of play until you drop it and if he has the same attention span that I do, he probably wont last long. And I really liked what I played.

MHW is an infinitely better game. Most 12 year olds can play any game they set their mind on.

My 10 year old has been playing complex PC sims for a few year. Games so complex that the UI boggles the mind when I look at them with zero context.

I wouldn't day that Monster Hunter is frustrating, but it is laborious, but in a fun way, I think.

But I would go for Fallen Order in a lower difficulty than the standard, it won't be a walk in the park but it totally stops being frustrating. I play the standard difficulty until I hit on the bosses and it was becoming an annoying thin and lowered it and really enjoyed the rest of the game.

Monster Hunter is the better game, but it's much harder to play. It's way more complex, has extensive crafting and equipment upgrading, and the controls take a lot of getting used to.

12 years old is definitely old enough to play Monster Hunter. Most kids in Japan probably start playing it at around 7 or 8. Coop is a lot of fun, unlike what someone else said you don't need friends to play it online. Having trouble ? You can, whenever you want, call for help, and other players can join you on the hunt. You don't need to grasp all the subtilities of the system. I've finished the DLC, Iceborne, almost entirely by playing coop and I just know the basics of Monster Hunter. You hit monsters, kill them, make armors and weapons out of their bones. Repeat. I know how to craft electric traps in order to capture them, I know how to craft a few potions, and there you go, I don't use any other items lmao.

Star Wars was, to me, really boring. Also, it's a metroid-like game, so progression is not linear, make sur your child enjoy that kind of thing. It's not a linear action game, it really is a metroid like game that is a little bit more focused on combats.

Anyway, my vote goes, without a doubt, to Monster Hunter World. Though you have to make sure they will like that kind of stuff. It's a bit repetitive. It's just boss fights, again and again. And you'll kill the same monster dozens and dozens of times.

MHW is as laborious as a single player game can get. Fallen order on the other hand, while great, is quite simple/easy by all standards.

People stanning HARD for MHW in the comments but the poll results look like they're from another thread entirely.

Look, MHW is a good game, we get it, but in what reality is it less work than Fallen Order?

That's because Jedi Fallen Order is so obviously the answer it goes without saying.

The Monster Hunter people have to explain themselves to rationalize it

jedi fallen order is way less work, especially with difficulty options

MHW is a way better game though and my dumbass 12 year old self would have chosen that, gotten frustrated, and spent hours learning how to play it

To be honest, when I was 12 years old I would've played either. I'm pretty sure your 12-year-old it has no issues playing any game now at this age.

I'm in my 30's and I feel like Monster Hunter would still be too frustrating and laborious for me, haha.

Of course I've built up my gaming preferences since getting into games (probably around 12 years old, honestly). Still, a Star Wars action game with difficulty settings will probably be a safer bet, assuming they're into Star Wars.

Thanks for the comments so far. Basically I'm buying games for a 12 year old girl and 16 year old boy. Got both Fallen Order and Monster Hunter Iceborne for sale on Black Friday so I was wondering who to give what game.

I mean, Fallen Order is unequivocally an 'easier' game by virtue of having difficulty options, but I just wouldn't undersell a 12 year old because of difficulty or frustration specifically in general - only you know the kids, what they like/dislike or how much into gaming they are (which surely affects how patient they are and how quick on the uptake).

I mean, anecdotally, a LOT of people here on Era were beating much harder games than either of these at that age, but that doesn't mean every child wants to.

Is a 12 year old asking you which game they should get? What's the context? Why these two games?
I got a bunch of games on sale for Black Friday so I was parcelling them out.

Those are the last two games to sort out before I wrap them. The two left most columns are the older sibling's, the next two columns (starting with Miles and Fallen Order) are the 12 year old girl's.

A bunch of games with female protagonists like Silksong and Kena slipped into next year, so I had to slip in a few others.

Iceborne is an expansion you dont really need to experience unless you have a couple or hundred hours in the base game.

I'm not really sure a 12 year old would understand the combos, decoration system, and such of MHW. I still have to wiki this stuff myself at times because the game does a poor job of explaining a lot of mechanics. MHW is not a very friendly game in many senses.

edit: Also, the late game stuff is just out of the question. Even with amazing armor and decorations, you can get killed (carted) instantly because enemies have multi hitting combos. I really don't think most kids would enjoy that type of difficulty. It's not an easy game.

Monster Hunter is not for the easily frustrated

Says the person who dropped it after getting one shot by Bezelgeuse.

Fallen Order also has easier difficulty options

Fallen Order for sure. There are difficulty options and you don't spend more time fighting menus than monsters in this game.

Some of the UI stuff in Monster Hunter is complex and unintuitive, but nothing a 12 year old couldn't handle if they are interested in the game.

Any kid into Star Wars would love Fallen Order. Just put it on easy if it's too challenging.

Monster Hunter is the definition of laborious, hate that game and all its subsystems upon subsystems and meaningless stats.

All I'm gonna say is that if someone introduced me to Monster Hunter at 12 rather than Warhammer 40K I would be rich. MHW is the best game of the gen IMHO.

Its systems can be complex and sometimes tedious but the joy of the hunt lasts a lifetime.

So my vote is Knack 2.

You can handle any games has a 12 years old.
You have a loooooooot of time at that age so MH would be my choice.

Monster Hunter World is complex and laborious but it's also got some of the best action combat of the decade. 12 year olds aren't infants. If they're interested in it, they will learn and adapt. Possibly more easily than a bunch of exhausted working adults who can't even muster up the energy to play video games anymore when posting on Reset Era is easier.

I watched my 12 year old nephew play MHW and he loved it. The defender gear they give you early on really makes starting part pretty easy.

The level design and map UI in Jedi Fallen Order frustrated me so much. But MHW is so complex. I would say Jedi Fallen Order.

My 11 year old has finished Fallen Order twice, I noped out of Monster Hunter both times I tried it because it was too laborious to get in to.

As a side note I have both games and they each frustrate me within the first two hours and I end up giving up and playing Horizon or Nier Automata just to play something responsive.

Maybe I'm just an idiot but I found the puzzles in FO order be really frustrating and not fun at all. Like literally the first mission after the intro trying to find my way into that temple thing was ridiculous. Everything looked the same and that 3D map was useless

It's worth noting that with Iceborne, everyone (even base game owners) have immediate access to armor and weapons that significantly outclass most of the original game right at the start. It has made my fresh game pass playthru much easier.
