We've been trying to reach you concerning your vehicle's extended warranty. You should've received a notice in the mail about your car's extended warranty eligibility. Since we've not gotten a response, we're giving you a final courtesy call before we close out your file. Press 2 to be removed and placed on our do-not-call list. To speak to someone about possibly extending or reinstating your vehicle's warranty, press 1 to speak with a warranty specialist.

I get this every now and then, and it's just kind of amusing because I don't even own a car nor have I ever owned one.

I don't mind the calls because I literally never answer my phone anyway, but I wish these dicks would stop sending mail that looks super official and threatening that after the immediate 'Oh shit' butt-pucker you realize is just some dumb bullshit trying to sell you something.

I forgot, was this one of those scams where they're really getting a ton of recordings of people answering phone calls for AI learning or w/e?

Been getting those IRS scams recently too. Maybe I should bait 'em lol

I actually got one of these:

how the fuck did they know I got a Takata Airbag recall done on a certain date? How the fuck do they have my VIN number? This looks so legit that I actually called my dealership and nope, they weren't "temporary parts" at all. What the fuck

edit: turns out its most likely public record, since dealerships get your info this way when you buy your car

I don't think I've ever received that one in Canada.

It's usually one of two variants - one completely in Chinese and I have no goddamn clue what it's about (the voice and tone seems to be the same so I assume it's the same robocall) and the classic but now really tired CRA 'there's a lawsuit against you by the federal government' that has been going on for years.

Someone keeps sending me automated prank calls through an online service and between those and these scams it's making me want to have Do Not Disturb on at all times, regardless of the risks that would leave

Automated spam networks will generally mark down a number as a no-go if calls go answered and you'll filter out of existing lists...until you pick up another spam call, that is. Then you're back on the menu.
Wait, so you're saying to answer the call? ...but not answer the next spam call after that?

the wildest spam call I ever got was the one about the police having a warrant for my arrest WHILE I WAS IN OUTPATIENT TREATMENT FOR ALCOHOLISM (meaning I was with some drug addicts with police records and stuff)

wildest shit I ever had heard and made my butt pucker for a second or two ngl

Does pressing 2 to be removed from their list do anything at all? Or is it just to prove that this number is indeed being used by a real human and even that is a trap?!

Pretty certain it's a trap that confirms the line goes to a real person.

This is anecdotal, but I've noticed departing from the standard "Hello?" seems to confound those automated scam calls. When I'm working it goes something like this:

"Good morning, this is Teh_Lurv."
<silence>
"Good morning, this is Teh_Lurv."
<more silence>
"Hello?"
:robo voice: "This is Jane from Microsoft. We've recently detected suspicious activity..."
<hang up>

?

No, I'm saying that if you do answer, you're on the list and your number will be bombarded until you turn down enough calls that whatever lists you've been put on age you out for inactivity.

Does pressing 2 to be removed from their list do anything at all? Or is it just to prove that this number is indeed being used by a real human and even that is a trap?!

I'd imagine this is the case. Don't even send them to the robo-answerer, either, as that probably also counts.

I'm changing my number when the new iPhone comes out specifically to try and get away from that crap and some random other places who always call and ask for the same lady who I assume had this number before me.

it's honestly really annoying

I get the state on where these robocall insurances are coming from, and everytime I answer just in the small chance I'm getting polled but alas

That won't help for the first part. They are systematically auto-dialing through each number.

If you have Android OS, it should filter this stuff out most of the time. I usually don't answer when I don't know the caller and look at it after to see if it states spam.

If it's important, they will leave a message

One time I got a collection of voicemails over several weeks that was like a multi-part saga of this lady "trying to get back to me" about this "multi-million investment". I was almost amused by the dedication

I get these calls every day. Now, I'm getting texts. None of them leaves a voicemail either. Changing your number won't work. They'll call every damn number under the sun. Glad I got T-mobile scam shield. Now I'm seeing "Likey a Scam call" whenever they call.
