It's crazy we now have heatsinks for storage!
It's crazy we now have heatsinks for storage!
I don't know if some ppl are being willfully obtuse, disingenuous...
Its hard to tell.
Man, I don't want to call people out but i searched a few of your profiles for "seagate" and your reaction to the price of the Xbox's expansion card was quite different than the "Good price" reaction you're giving here.
What are the UK prices for the other sizes?
It could mean "We all use roughly the same components and got the controller from the same manufacturer". Which is kind of how the first NVMe 4.0 drives launched last year.what happens when you have multiple competing products at the same price?
edit: SN750 is $135 on Amazon right now
Thank you.
Yeah, but if the Xbox drive is getting crazy hot in it's larger form factor, do you expect an even faster SSD to maintain those speeds at those temps in such a small enclosure? I'm not sure... Heat increases resistance and slows electrons.
£465.99 for 2TB

Was it fake? I thought it came from a reputable source. (The SSD heating up, not overall system heat)There's a proper air flow going through there to cool it down. They spent a lot on the cooling solution, I'd trust the engineers on that. And I thought the Xbox heating up was a fake rumour?
Thanks! Think I'll stick with my external HDD for a while TBH.

That proprietary stuff Microsoft went with is trash. Sony made the right decision in the long run.

Was that the one where a journalist got his hands burned oe something? I have to admit haven't followed the story very closely so you may be right.
No he didnt get his hands burned. He touched the metal part of the adapter after pulling it out of the console and said it was hot - which is normal. People were being overdramatic saying he burned himself.
SSDs run hot. USB drives run hot. It's normal.
yup prices will come down with time and we'll see larger storage options at this pricepoint. PCIE gen3 nvme drives have dropped significantly in price over the past few years. Expect the same as time goes on.229 doesn't sound too bad. I still remember when I paid 170 euro for 512gb Samsung Evo Sata SSD in 2015!
Now I can get >10x that speed. Hopefully, over 2 years these prices will drop even further and that's when I'll strike :D.
Oh yeah lmao. That makes sense. So it was just overblown as everything is nowadays.
Why would they even do that though? Assuming Microsoft gets a cut if third party peripheral sales, it seems greedy. Damn near vita memory card status. We are getting storage that's way better than the XB solution on PC and PS5 for around the same price. Even when competition kicks in, non standard formats always have some dumb markup. It's probably just a standard 2230/40 size in a custom enclosure. Those are generally more expensive regardless of the custom enclosure anyway, but hopefully once the exclusivity period goes away for Seagate, prices drop.
Agreed, I do love the simplicity of the solution even though it is proprietary. I generally don't like fiddling with my systems to begin with. One of the biggest reasons why I've yet to dive into building my own PC.
Yeah, maybe a giant bomb member iirc...Was that the one where a journalist got his hands burned or something? I have to admit haven't followed the story very closely so you may be right.
These are much better drives than the Seagate one for XBOX, for one. Also, the fact that these are coming out at the same price point is exciting, because prices for these will come down much faster than the proprietary one. Also, you can actually do something with these after you take them out of the PS5.Man, I don't want to call people out but i searched a few of your profiles for "seagate" and your reaction to the price of the Xbox's expansion card was quite different than the "Good price" reaction you're giving here.

Point stands, though. Higher performance SSDs will produce even more heat.

The point is that theoretical max speeds don't equate to real world speeds of hot NAND modules.Do you think Microsoft and Sony don't know that? I don't understand the point tbh.
That wasn't the point...The point where you just said got his hand burned?
He said he didn't, but the point still stands?
It was Jeff Bakalar on the Beastcast.
Which you can also use on your PC, if you eventually get another or just need one for whatever reason. Its $229 for a 1TB drive that has a read speed of 7gb/s at PS5 launch.
What are you talking about?
The point is that theoretical max speeds don't equate to real world speeds of hot NAND modules.
It looked like you could maybe fit one in without the metal shroud on top. I wonder if a heat sink or that metal thing functions better under the plate for moving around the heat ?I wonder if Sony will be recommending the heatsink-equipped models.
I'm not concerned, just trying to have a discussion about it but have been responding to knee-jerk responses from people concerned that anything other than blind approval is somehow bad... Both companies obviously chose to go different directions, but that doesn't mean that discussing it and looking at the good and bads of those decisions is in any way a bad thing. My question stands: do you think they don't know or otherwise didn't account for this? I don't get the concern.
It's an em shielding. It looked like you could maybe fit one in without the metal shroud on top. I wonder if a heat sink or that metal thing functions better under the plate for moving around the heat ?
PS5 was designed to deal with that though and the fact that you're trying to Sony Too the heat situation the Series X expansion cards has is disingenuous at best.Point stands, though. Higher performance SSDs will produce even more heat.
it's disingenuous to understand that ultra fast NAND modules produce a lot of heat?PS5 was designed to deal with that though and the fact that you're trying to Sony Too the heat situation the Series X expansion cards has is disingenuous at best.
PS5 users wont be touching hot expansion cards or SSD's was my point. Thus there is no comparisons to be made really.it's disingenuous to understand that ultra fast NAND modules produce a lot of heat?
