In an interview with GI.biz, Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz said his company's deal with Epic did indeed cause "some ripples," but overall he is "very happy" with how the game is performing commercially.

"Overall, I'm still of the opinion like I was at the beginning that, as an industry and as a publisher, we should welcome Epic and their business model," he said. "We have a strong relationship with Epic and we continue to have a strong relationship with Steam as well."

SOURCE

I think the issue is that putting your own profit front and center while also inviting outrage on a consistent basis is not the best way to manage consumer relations in the long term...

I'm doing well with not supporting anything on EGS. I can't support Toxic Tim in any way. I'd rather not play a game than cave and support such a shitty company.

I absolutely think being paid for sales they don't have to make is something publishers and developers will justifiably welcome and be happy about. Everyone loves getting money, and everyone loves getting money with no expectations even more.

However, as someone who is neither a publisher nor a developer, I personally think Epic and the EGS business model fucking sucks.

Competition is always good.
There is nothing inherently good or beneficial about competition.

Competition can incentivise changes which potentially bring benefits, but equally competition can kill off those less able to compete or create perverse incentives which only promote detrimental changes.

Overall, I'm still of the opinion like I was at the beginning that, as an industry and as a publisher, we should welcome Epic and their business model

As a company, we have to do the things we believe in," he said. "We make mistakes as well but this wasn't a mistake. We need to embrace a digital partner that offers a much more compelling rev share model than anybody else, and I think they act as a role model for us and for other digital partners as well -- a 70/30 split is quite frankly anachronistic

We have many games on Steam, including many new releases like Iron Harvest. But I'm not ruling out to do an exclusive with Epic again.

The combinaison of these 3 quotes are what creates a lot of the negative reaction over the deals with Epic.

Firstly he said that we should welcome their business model, then he talk about their revenue model which is fair, but he ends up talking about exclusive deals with Epic. So what we should understand by that is that their revenue of offering free money should be embraced? Because that's what he says, since he doesn't really talk about really being on the platform outside of exclusive deals. They try to muddy the water by acting like they're taking a stand even though that's actually not the case.

Say that you want the security the deal provides but all that moral grandstanding can be a bit irritating for consumers.

Let's see how sales are on EGS for games that aren't exclusive. If Cyberpunk, et al comes out and has more than a single digit percentage for EGS sales, then we can start popping bottles.

I keep seeing talk that EGS is great and sales have been good *for the exclusives*. Like no shit, did you think we just weren't gonna buy it? If it's the only place on PC to get it then no wonder numbers are good.

I think one could make a case for indie games under the epic store as it's really hard to thrive in a sea of numerous good indie games and having cash given to you without a need for sales is a life saver in the indie industry but relatively large publishers like deep silver has no excuse.

Lol. People here are more angry about Epic than other issues in gaming. It's kinda hilarious for those of us that don't care.

Despite EGS barely meeting online store standards, I ain't waiting a year to play a game I like. So sure I guess.

The 70/30 talk is always so disingenuous when we know Epic paid a shitton for exclusivity.

Corporate executive gets millions and is very happy you say? Game publishers okay if more money was spent to bid for exclusive rights to their games you say?

Stunned that an exec is happy with getting a giant bag of cash to keep their game exclusive for a year.

The company with their hand outstretched furthest for Epic's money says it's a great business model.

And this comment...

Koch Media took the decision to make the PC version of Metro Exodus only available through Epic's store for the first year, sparking outrage from some of the series' fans -- something an employee of the shooter's developer 4A Games fought back against.

...is an outright lie since Metro Exodus is available to play in its entirety on PC via Microsoft's Game Pass for $1. So please if you're interested, pay $1 and blow through it because fuck Koch media, Deep Silver, and THQ.

Well of course he happy. It's a guaranteed profit.

Once he has the deal the game sold could be the equivalent horrific love child of ET and Plumbers don't wear Pants and get sales number that don't make double digits and he still get millions from Epic.

Doubly so when it's bought up as a talking point against steam when it comes to games like Borderlands 3 and Metro Exodus that would have easily made the requisite $50 million in order for the rates to drop down to 80/20.

Competition is always good.

Not when they bribe small businesses into exclusivity on games that people already paid for on competing platforms.

Not really possible or realistic so i doubt thats their goal - lol.

Okay, but if it was up to Epic they'd string up every single game that people are excited about. I already skipped on 4 games that I would have bought day 1 if they were on Steam.

See now I can't tell whether to take him at face value with Metro sales or not

I feel like if it underperformed he would've said so

Maybe they are counting the paid unit sales from Epic as sales. Because after all, those are unit sales for them.

In either case I too can't take at face value the opinions of a CEO company that is basically getting loads of free money in exchange of exclusives.

Yea, I think the welcoming committee has checked out on the EGS given it is somehow the most toxic of conversations going right now. I do think these fake ass complementary sessions have gone far in setting the stage for that negative discourse.

Epic might have paid them enough for the exclusivity that they would have been happy with 15k sales.

Really? I would have expected him to say it was great and then quietly stopped doing EGS exclusives (if it really underperformed with upfront cash + sales).

That's my initial read on it too, though I figure if it did do pretty bad, they would say they aren't interested in future partnerships

Considering Deep Silver is a big publisher and not a indie dev, nah. I still think they get the Shenmue 3 exclusivity to recover cost, so at the end the only fucked are EGS (which frankly they deserve being manipulated by Deep Silver and Ubisoft) and (sadly) the users. So fuck them.

Would it really matter if it underperformed? As long as Koch media is getting a wad full of cash to keep Steam/GoG out of competition, what do they care? 4A could go under and it wouldn't matter. Koch Media has plenty of other developer's games to pimp to Epic.

Yes, because they'd likely have to say that it did

To think that they screwed over the people that backed Shenmue 3 on KS - and then turn around and say they are happy with their little deal? Come on.

I feel like with the free money given out by Epic and the extra income publishers will get once they release on steam from double dippers, EGS boycotters, and most of all just the bigger market, the only loser in these scenarios is still Epic.

Well, I know if there's one person I can trust to tell me something is good, it's the person profiting off of it.
