The tech is progressing crazily fast. I didn't really hear about it until last year. And the stuff ctrl shift face is putting out is lightyears ahead of the stuff I first saw. I can imagine this being way more convincing if I wasn't aware it was fake from the start.

Give it five years and odds are most of the kinks have been more or less ironed out for any people with a decent video-library to train the algorithm on. Hell, just comparing this video with the earlier Stallone/Schwarzenegger one and this is way better.

This is honestly very disturbing and I'm creeped out by all of it. The potential to blackmail people is off the chart and in 10 years time anything can just be dismissed as "fake news".

Eventually we are going to live in a world where you pick your cast. Like Bruce Willis in action movies? No reason to ever watch one without him as the leading actor ever again. There's also a potential for a sort of "gig" economy licensing out your likeness for other people to use in their media. Upload your face with the hashtags so people can find you in the database, and you get paid everytime someone picks you.

Screw casting The Rock in everything, I'm excited for the day I can cast myself in movies. Technology ftw

OT, but man, their relationship is so hard to watch. I love The Shining, but I would agree with Stephen King that Jack Torrance shouldn't be an asshole from the start. His character is never likable. Even without all the supernatural shit, two people in a marriage this bad being cut off from the world for months was always going to end up with one of them dead.

The Jim Carrey one could be perfect with a day's worth of paint work.
The Tom Cruise one straight up sucked.

A weird angle of this is imagining that Jack Nicholson gives the best performance of Jim Carrey's life. Like it feels like a Black Mirror episode where an actor idolizes another actor or performance and can never top it, but they don't have to since technology can just make it their performance.

I love Carrey as an actor and he's done great movies. If they could get voice synthesis though, would this suddenly become his best film? Would certain actors elevate films from near-greatness to masterpieces? I think the immediate thing that strikes you about Deep Fakes is fake news and transforming everyone into a pornstars but there are endlessly creepy and unsettling scenarios.

Imagine these videos but with manual CGI enhancement to erase the flaws.

You can see why he used Carrey for that Nicholson The Shining scene. When Jack starts getting really intense, that's similar to the way Carrey gets intense. The eyebrows and the smiling, and the little frustrated expressions. That's when this works best.

He did another video, he's gonna get some mileage out of this Jim Carrey AI-training.

Pretty astonishing. If you're looking really closely there's signs; skin tones that don't quite match at the joins, for example. But overall, it's unbelievably convincing. If you showed it to someone who wasn't familiar with the actors, I doubt they'd pick it.

looks alright. cg people are definitely good enough now that stuff like the tron legacy uncanny valley isnt an issue. don't think its a particularly convincing fake tho

Because it's just some random dude doing it on pre-existing footage. Now imagine an actual film crew using adequate direction, angles, lighting, etc. to make something convincing.

There are more episodes. It's amazing how quickly the tech is evolving over a year or two. Voice synthesis is also advancing rapidly, so the same videos could be redone soon with Jim's voice.

I feel like the potential for blackmail will be a sharp, sharp spike followed by a nosedive. Things like nudes and general compromising pictures will basically stop being threatening because everyone will go "No yeah those are fakes man."

Not even that. You are forgetting that there are people who are concurrently making AI software that are also distinguishing between fake/real media. Anti deep fake AI

Imagine actors existing forever and staying at the same age, starring in movies for decades and always looking the same. Imagine actors that have passed appearing in films again looking like they're in their prime.

This all suddenly seems like a very real possibility.

I wish Disney had dine this rather than a full CG face model for Tarkin in Rogue One.

It was an impressive CG model of you see the behind the scene stuff, but it just looked SO bad and creepy on film and it's only going to look worse as time goes on.

We don't need to imagine it. Kurt Russel in GoTG2, Michael Douglas in Endgame, Robert Redford in Endgame, RDJ in Civil War...

As for starring roles, how about Sam Jackson in Captain Marvel? Marvel has been pushing this envelope for years.

I honestly think deepfake needs to be super regulated and under wraps like porn. Imagine people making videos of Obama saying white people suck or whatever. It will spread like wildfire on Facebook and Republican circles and become "truth".

Anyone can make deepfakes, you'll never contain. The fact that there is going to be no real digital evidence in a few years is something that concerns for the future of civilization. We are heading towards a post reality society, what on Earth does that do to civilization?

I wonder if they could add Rosa's face over Alita's as a demo. See how it would look like. I would prefer the film with the real actor.

Can't believe what you read, write, see or hear. Things are just gonna get more polarised with no accepted truth thanks to bad actors using deepfakes and other tactics like Russia in 16.

Robin Williams wrote it in his will that his likeness was restricted for 25 years, bunch of actors got spooked once the Audrey Hepburn CG advert released for galaxy chocolate.

Not America
IIRC quite a few years ago there was a tv show (can't remember if it was the prophetic Simpsons) that featured an episode where this person had the opportunity to watch a movie/tv show while being able to freely swap out actors in different roles to suit their taste.

Anyway, deepfakes are soon becoming the better alternative to CGI models human actors for hollywood to employ because almost all CGI humans even in the higher budget movies have that uncanny smoothness in motion i.e. the uncanny valley effect.

The biggest fear still remains the political ramifications of this. Hopefully the software to be able to detect DF can keep pace.

I think with Tarkin a big issue in the process was when they decided to tweak the actor's motion captured performance to add small details from Peter Cushing's expressions. That likely ended up just making it feel more artificial rather than making it more natural.

It's...interesting. I only see Jack tbh. And Bale. The rest is an expression that resembles another actor but it's still Jack.

How do you "create" a deepfake anyway? Is it just cgi?

An AI analyzes a bunch of photos of a face (or few, it can work with even just one), then replaces the face it detects in another video. It has been trained in different ways such as humans saying "yes" and "no" to many outputs, or another AI called a descriminator doing so itself, in which case the learning can be very quick. The code generated AIs is a black box, meaning we cannot really read it to know how it does what it does, we can only evaluate the output and train it again. Some AIs are given guidelines to speed up the learning, but it is believed that the most robust algorithms are those that are not assisted and are simply told if the result is valid or not.

The results you see is essentially no hand-work, the AI just did its thing and that was the result. The one outputting this is just making tiny tweaks in post-processing for colors and such, and he has no control on the results.
