I really can't believe that this day actually came. Sure I've joined in on the Valve hate for years taking every opportunity to say they are giving up on what made us love them in the first place. How dare they abandon Gordon Freeman. I've even said and I'm ashamed to say this - That its been too long I don't even care about Gordon Freeman anymore. Like a spurned lover.

Truthfully though when I would day dream about what game I want, the game I've been waiting for its always been Half Life. The VR reveal reminded me of one thing more than any other. There are no games like Half Life. Its absence has been a void that the industry has definitely not filled at least for me. Hearing the sights and sounds and watching the new gameplay possibilities that are made possible with VR brought back all those exact same feelings of 12 years ago.

So I'm all in. Getting an Index and a new PC and then maybe declaring Bankruptcy shortly thereafter. I made this thread cause I know there are dozens of us that were waiting for this day and it finally came and I couldn't be more excited.

Seems next gen really starts in March.

Still kind of shocked we're getting an actual Half-Life game. I wonder why they didn't just make it Half-life 3 though.

Trying to play it in Labo VR would be hilarious.

I honestly can't muster any excitement for this spin-off prequel. There's some nice visual design in the teaser, everything else registers weakly on my meh-meter while my awesome-o-meter has a limp needle.

When Half-Life came out, I was 8. I think I only played by the time I was 11 or 12. When Half-Life 2 came out after what felt like an eternal hype cycle, I played it at launch at the age of 14. Two minor additions to that story were made, the last of it released and played when I was 17. I was enamoured of that franchise, and was waiting for another episode or a proper sequel. A lot happened in my life since then, but no official Half-Life game was in sight. I slowly lost hope, shattered for good when Epistle 3 was leaked. Next year I will be 30. Fixed job, living together with my fiancé. Not quite my first one since the days of HL2 to be fair. The Half-Life story continues when I'll be 30, a different person, a man.

I probably will not play at launch because I don't have a particularly powerful gaming PC anymore. I decided to mainly play on console a decade ago circa, among other reasons, because of the absence of new installments in franchises I cared about including Half-Life, with the worthy games mainly releasing on consoles either as exclusives or as multiplatforms. The next Half-Life is coming, but it requires a solid PC and an expensive VR set. An investment overall that would cost me more than buying the next Xbox and PlayStation combined at launch. If this was 2010 and I had fucktons of disposable outcome, I wouldn't blink an eye. Half-Life is worth it. But we're about a decade too late for such a huge investment to be done blindly, so for the first time since I first touched a Half-Life product, the next adventure will wait. I have my doubts about the potential of VR having played it multiple times, and I'm not sure Half-Life needs to go in that direction.

But it is Half-Life after all. I can't remain indifferent, and if the series is coming back for good, that's one of the best things to happen in gaming in the past couple years. For me, that is.

I am with you my friend. HL series is my all time favourite game series.
I lost hope and started to not care. But seeing this trailer I almost teared up a bit, so many memories came back and I can't wait to spend some time with the games and replay them.

It's pretty cool. VR only is a buzzkill though, but if it means we get more Half-Life games in the future then I'm all for it.

Hell yeah i'm excited. I gave up hope like the most of us but the real deal is finally fucking back. I still play valve games and never stopped, but to be able to merge my love of single player and the worlds that Valve creates again feels special. If Half-Life never came back I was okay with it, but to see Valve with the confidence to release a half-life game after 12 years is a sight to behold. Good times ahead of us fam.

It's not even a real half life game...

This will probably be a funny comment to look back on in a year.

The only thing stopping me from completely freaking out is the fact that I have to try not to die before march 2020.
Sounds easy enough but you never know.

Don't really care about HL: Alyx, but if it sells well maybe we'll actually get Half-Life 3. I'll even buy their damn headset to play it in VR.

Celebration thread. Negative nellies can't resist posting. Pathetic 🤣

Can not wait to play this game. What a fantastic surprise and it's out in March. March!! I'm glad I have a savings account lol.

I'm definitely excited but tempering my expectations as many of the talent that made those first games great are no longer there. If the team building this game can find the same kind of magic, then it's going to be great, but I'm setting my expectations at the level of any random developer at this point and not the Valve of Yore.

edit: Oh yes, I would probably be way more excited if I could afford to play this game, heh.

It is awesome indeed... I didn't know if the day would ever come. And it's always nice to see positive celebratory threads :)

I'll gladly play Half Life:Alyx, but I really want them to progress the story.

Episode 2's cliffhanger still hurts to this day.

Its not only that they are trying again is that what they showed actually feels lile a modern half life and that valve seems to give a damn about it.

I will need to rob a subway but i will be there someday.

A ton of the people who made HL and HL2 are still there. Someone on Reddit counted a minimum of 45 HL people still work there, and the game's core team is supposed to be 50-60.

That's promising! So long as they have good leadership. I was thinking mostly of the writing team tbh; was it mostly Chet & Eric, or was that before their time? The timeline is blurry for me at this point..

Lame thread. I'm a Half Life fan, and no - I'm not happy. Finish the fucking story you dropped a decade+ ago Valve. Show some basic level of respect towards your players.

I know it's not the same, but is there a relatively easy way to experience Half Life 2 in Steam VR?

Some some basic level of respect towards creators. If you are a Half Life fan, how could you not be excited about being able to literally step into the Half Life world? And yes, this game will tell a new Half Life story - who cares what timeline it is set in?

So what is the best way to play the series. HL1 Source? Then just HL2 through episode 2, or should I play the HL1 expansions as well?

I believe the project lead of HL2 is still there.

The main HL writer was Marc Laidlaw, who no longer works at Valve. However, they've said he's been consulting on the game with the new writers.

Chet and Erik (and Jay Pinkerton) helped write the HL2 episodes. Chet is gone, but Erik and Jay have returned to work on the game.
