Right but it's not just prison reform. OP was just using last nights episode to highlight the general shift left by Oliver over the last couple of months
Again, what shift left though? He's always been here. I don't think anything he said last night would have been something he wouldn't have done a year ago if COVID happened then.

Johns always been like this. The only difference now is that he can now pull in exasperation by referencing older clips from years ago.

There's nothing radical or insane about what he is saying, unless you live in a right wing hellhole. I'm so tired of this rhetoric. It's just like how even Democrats would talk about crazy Bernie and his extreme radical socialism agenda of wanting us to give us health care and affordable schooling.
Radical doesn't mean insane.

Radical is neither good bad or bad it just means you want major changes to the systems or strong ideology
Mlk would be considered a radical for his time, hell probably still would be

His writing staff frequently cites peer reviewed studies and pull interviews and personal testimonies from career officials working in a lot of the industries his show covers. Although Trumpist populism has reframed "radical left" to mean anything vaguely left of center-right, I don't think there's ever been a segment he's run where he hasn't at least done his homework and validated some of his beliefs.

Hell, I've always been pleasantly surprised by how forthcoming his show is about how many of his proposed ideas aren't easy solutions to complex problems but can instead be seen as constructive thought exercises that help work towards a future solution. I think many of these political media personalities have a general propensity towards viewing their "solutions" as a one size fits all for very complicated problems. I think it requires oneself to set aside their ego to truly admit that their ideas are just that: ideas. As opposed to some miracle cure bereft of all practicality.

John Oliver's show has thankfully always fallen on the more cautious side of that for me.

Yeah, I know the dictionary definition of radical, but it doesn't actually mean that in the US where it is primarily used as a rhetorical device against the left. Nobody with center or right leaning politics is ever described as radical here. It's always when somebody on the left advocates for some kind of basic human dignity for other people.

Oliver and his writers are the same they always have been since the start of the show.
My man is just a bit angrier and not pulling any punches these days, and rightfully so.

Yeah only the OP was clearly using it as an affectionate term.

He's angrier in his expressions of how important things are (and distaste of Tucker Carlson), but I don't really see a shift in ideology. I've watched his show pretty religiously since he started doing it.

Count me as another person who doesn't get how radicalization applies here. I also generally don't like the term being used to describe anything other than what it actually means.

The only radical opinion is people treating prisoners like they're not deserving anything but the most excruciating torture.
If we're being honest, in the US on the right they only think that because they always picture a dark skinned outsider when they think about it.
It's really the natural conclusion of the traitors losing that war because they couldn't possibly imagine a world without the subjugation of people they didn't consider their equal.
