Both my consoles are too loud when watching a 4K movie. I had to return my first Ps5 as it was ridiculously loud. The replacement I got was a big improvement but still a constant noise from the fan. When playing games there is a noise but far less noticeable unless I mute the sound.

My Series X is louder again, which is surprising as otherwise it is absolutely silent when playing games

Are many of you experiencing the same? I don't want to have to do a return again only to have the same problem. I wonder is there an easier fix, for example I now have my Ps5 horizontal, but problem has persisted

The noise is almost certainly the disc drive, not a fan, which is in consistent use when watching videos compared to playing games (which run off the SSD).

I found the Series X unusable as a player, the drive is too loud. On the PS5, mine quietens down after a minute, so I tend to use that.

The Series X's drive is too loud to be a good player. I still use it to save spending hundreds on a standalone 4K player, but, yeah, not a good experience.

Yeah other than initial drive spin, PS5 has been whisper quiet during bluray playback. My receiver makes more noise.

A dedicated 4K Bluray player is still better to have than current consoles for a myriad of reasons though.

Neither. Xbox support is an afterthought as it plays disc like crap. Ps5 you can't escape the system light glow (doesn't really bother me for games but for movies I don't know I found it distracting for dark scenes.)

I have to and bought a UB820. It's so much better as a player than either console. The Xbox also kept stuttering after pausing a film.

Yeah my One X and Series X are seriously loud when playing blu rays. I never play anything off disks so it was a bit startling at first. You can get used to it if you're far enough away from your console but if you're pretty close or in a small room, it could be a deal breaker

no noise issues but I've found other issues with the Xbox 4k Blu-ray player like literally not being able to play LOTR 4k

Yeah my series x is too loud for watching without annoyance. PS5 seems fine, but if you try you can hear it during quiet scenes.
My one x was pretty quiet, so I'm surprised at how the series x seems to be a step backward in that regard.
I find media playing on console to be inconsistent generally. Like also streaming, Netflix, YouTube, and prime play fine, but Apple and Disney plus suffer stuttering judder (series x).

Not had any issues playing BRs or UHD BRs on my PS5, but I can definitely hear the disc drive if the volume of the movie/show is quite low as I launch one of these discs/press play. Not an issue after 30 seconds, not that it's all that loud anyway.

Disappointing to hear about the drive noise from the XSX -- I can't really justify spending $500 on a DV compatible player when a non-DV $500 console exists. So I don't know what I'm going to do lol

PS5 is a great UHD player, but Atmos doesn't work for me with eArc. I have a Sony Bravia A90j.

Yeah my Sony x8002 is dead silent compared to the PS5.

PS5 when reading disk has a noticeable audible. It's not as bad as when installing a game, but you can clearly hear it.

I decided to forgo the disc drive on the PS5 and just rip discs to play through USB on my LG CX. You only get basic HDR and no DTS support but eh it's silent and no need for a standalone player

Do yourself the favor, get a nice mid-range standalone player, the IQ and features blow the consoles out of the water with 4K or HD Blu-Rays.

I never really liked using my consoles for this purpose (controller vs. remote, or buying another remote), less features, partially worse image quality, which is actually the reason to buy any 4k bluray at all in the first place instead of buying digital/streaming? They are louder and they use a lot more power during playback.

I used the One X and now the Series X, they are noticeably audible in quiet moments. The One X has a combination of fan noise and disc drive spin. The Series X only seems to have the drive spin .

I'm happy with the picture quality. If stand alone players are that much better then I'm happier living in ignorance. I don't want another device taking up space under my TV, another HDMI and another power socket when the console seems fine.

I've never watched a 4K disc, but just last week we watched Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace on blu-ray and I haven't noticed any noise at all. I'm on a PS5 by the way. It has the initial disc spinning noise, as it has when a game disc is inserted, but during playback I could hear nothing. For reference, I sit 6 feet away from the TV and use a Sony Muteki surround system at a considerably (but not extremely) loud volume.

I've watched a few 4K discs on my Series X, there's some initial 'loud' drive noises but nothing near as bad as what some here are saying, I couldn't even hear the drive unless I was really trying. I wonder if it's another 'luck of the draw' situation, I only got my system a couple months ago as well.

Watched a 4K disc earlier this week, didn't notice drive noise during the movie, only at startup.

My One X before it was fine as well.

But in all seriousness, I would probably never notice things like this unless they are super loud and the scene is completely soundless. I use my sound system as high as I can when watching movies.

My setup is different from yours by the looks of it, but while the disk is playing, have you pressed the options button on your dualsense and selected bit-stream from audio format option? Mine passed through Atmos to my receiver (your TV) after this.

Watched the Matrix Reloaded Dolby Atmos/Vision Bluray on the Series X last weekend and there was at least 5 occurrences of microstuttering, really takes you out of the experience :(

I haven't used my series X to watch any 4K blu-rays yet but the One X was fairly quiet when playing them and the PS4 Pro didn't even support them at all which I found to be odd given it's placement as a 4K media hub.

They're serviceable, but I'd go with a standalone player if you have a lot of 4K discs, or plan to. The Panasonic UB820 is a great choice, I've been very happy with it.

my PS5 was silent while watching some BBC nature 4K bluray.. but it looked the same as 1080p to my eyes. i expected to have my mind blown by the colors and contrasts and stuff but it just looks exactly the same as blurays have always looked for the past decade plus.

how can i make sure the PS5 is actually playing it in 4K and not 1080p..? how can i tell the difference?

Since we're talking about recommending a standalone player instead of a console, another perk of using a dedicated quality player is it will deliver true Dobly Vision metadata that is handled by the display and not by the player, allowing for a true Dolby Vision experience. XBox DV is handled player-side and the results are sub-par compared to a true dedicated DV signal that is processed by a dedicated unit in the display.

hmm I think the disc drive gets loud when I first put it in, but then during the movie when watching it is usually fine

Yes, my setup is correct.
It's an eArc port issue but i don't know if Tv-side or Soundbar-side (Samsung Q950T).

If i connect the PS5 to Soundbar via standard HDMI port, bypassing the TV, Atmos (via Dolby TrueHD) is gorgeous.

I think the PS5 doesn't support Atmos? Maybe that changed post-launch

Dolby Vision is not supported. Dolby Atmos is supported only for BD UHD

I keep my One X around for this purpose and I've had no complaints about it. Mine stays pretty quiet. I haven't used my One S in a long time for UHDs but I don't remember complaining about that one either.

I haven't had issues with the console being too loud, but I do hate on the PS5 when you pause or play and that massive symbol appears in the center of the screen for a few seconds. What a bizarre choice instead of just a little indicator in one of the corners like on PS3 and PS4.

I also wish there was a PS5 remote that worked as well as the PS3 Blu-ray remote did with the PS3. I'm currently using the PS4 remote but I'd like something newer that is as fully featured but with the PS5 in mind. The media remote the currently offer for the PS5 is essentially unusable with physical media and is essentially a streaming remote. I like having the frame advance and bookmark buttons, all of the features of a blu-ray player remote but with the console specific buttons as well. The PS3 remote was a pretty excellent universal remote as well.

Man I would kill for one of those remotes on PS5.

Same for me on Xsx : noisy when the disc starts spinning and then it gets quieter after a few seconds (still makes a tiny noise but nothing really disctracting). i wonder if it's because my console is placed horizontally and not vertically...

If you're serious about movies it's worth getting a dedicated player for Dolby Vision support alone (neither console yet supports for UHD playback I believe?), but also better picture and sound quality in general, more accurate colours, better upscaling for SD/1080p etc, as well as being almost silent during playback.

I picked up the frequently recommened Panasonic DP-UB820 during a sale and it's been worth it for me, but I do use it pretty much every day.
