Furry fandom by that name got started in the late 80s. While it's common to see people say it must have been due to some specific movie, like Disney's Robin Hood, if I recall it wasn't due to any one piece of media. It came out of the independent comics scene of the 80s.

There weren't a lot of anthro animal comics outside of Cerebus, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, making it a genre indie comic creators could exploit to stand out from the norm. The first weekend conventions in California were largely swapmeets for people making small print run comics.

Textbook answer: judging by whichever one of these fanzines came first, pick a big animated movie or show character 1 year to a few decades before that debuted. Probably a Disney character from the 1960s/1970s. There are apparently some olds in the fandom.
