Good Lord act 3 mission 3( the one where you have to get Mercia to the right side if the map)

Is sooooo difficult. I've tried it 5 times now. Anyone else having as much problems or any tips? I don't want to reduce the difficulty lol, I've usally quite good at these games.
I'm on this and it looks easy at first but then the unit flood never stops
The second caesar was a pain, but managed an A. The end was annoying with that last giant, they're such trash to deal with.

Yeah, flank her with harpies and build a wagon to meet her at the halfway point, then you can easily ferry her across the map

The difficulty sliders are a good idea, but in practice they feel kinda bad to use.

No additional reward for cranking up the difficulty... ok, fair enough. But then you realize that it'll likely harm your rating because it's probably going to take you longer to complete the map as a result of the increased difficulty.

And any reduction of difficulty, however small, automatically capping your rating to one star also feels harsh. I think it would be better if it just prevented you from getting 3 stars, or if it progressively capped you depending on how much you reduced the difficulty... ideally with a little bit of leeway to reduce the difficulty slightly without any penalty.

Also, being able to undo your last action would be a great QoL feature. One time I had four units perfectly positioned to reap the benefits of Caesar's groovy ability, but I accidentally pressed A one too many times and had Caesar wait instead of using the ability. Talk about ruff...

Reviews described multiplayer as the "gold standard" for turn based games but it's closer to unplayable. Like half my turns just end randomly. Mostly bought it for MP so it's currently just a wasted space on my Switch until they patch it. Wish Switch had refunds.

That, and it's just too close to AW for my liking — was hoping it would put a more creative spin on it in some way (in terms of gameplay). Indie Advance Wars was already done fine with Warbits but the AW style mechanics are just not for me when stuff like Into the Breach exists (too bad that's SP only).

Cool art though.

Do you mean because of the "end turn" placement? I'm confused by your first statement about turns ending randomly.
Though there are direct unit analogs, the way capturing works, the way critical hits work, and COs being units all alter the formula to be something that could co-exist with another proverbial AW.

If you're up for MP, I'm always down. I have a lobby open (posted the code a few posts above).

So I beat missions and when I reload game later, it says I stopped during a mission. I said yes once and it made me finish the last part of a mission. Next time it did that I said no and it lost my progress in the mission, which was Act 2 side 1 where I beat it, went to map screen and pressed save and exit. So what am I doing wrong?

No like... the turn just ends. Check codex, press B, oh now it's enemy turn. It's not consistent — not sure what triggers it. I accidentally ended a couple turns through menu in SP but that's not what's happening here. The games I joined had turn timer off so that's not it. Happened 3 times in my first two games within first 3 turns and I gave up.

You can turn off the automatic end turn option in the options if that's what's causing it.

Ok may have figured out what's going on — noticed turn timer in game. When creating a match, turn timer setting is set to default and can't be changed. When I create a match with that setting, then check match setting from lobby, it says turn timer is off. So I think it's always on but settings incorrectly said it was off, making me think it actually was off.

Found another new bug though lol — was in a match and I couldn't find new match with quick match, it just dumped me back into existing match. Could start a new match by hosting though

Do 4p matches get ppl from quick match or is that code only? Nobody showed up.

Edit: and can ppl ready up async? Or does everyone need to be there at same time to start? The "gold standard" stuff seems totally unwarranted. Ambiguous UIs, buggy features. Not even close.

Edit2: hosted a match, set to 2v2... it lists 4 teams on ready screen. Seriously this game is not even ready for early access.

Edit3: game says their turn, I go check on it, see their turn, then says my turn, immediately ends my turn, then does another turn for them.

Yeah, I'm done. $20 down the drain.

If you have finished all available actions your turns ends for you. That's probably what you're running into because I haven't heard of any other bug around that.

quick matches are always timed. Joining by code actually initiates unlimited turn time. Guessing the timer was going on your turn after they were done even without you being present. Perhaps a way to make matches end when someone bails? Either way, it's not directly communicated.

Also, I just won a match thanks to a Caravan. Raced to the bottom with my CO and it baited his CO down too. Blocked the valley path with my caravan, bought a dragon, then when he tried to destroy my wagon he took 80% damage for being on a road. LOL Next turn he resigned.

Never thought I'd win with a caravan unit, but there you go.

Warbits just has the match forfeited after like 72 hours of inactivity -- much more sensible.

Timed turns makes zero sense when the game supports async play -- I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known turns were timed in all quick match games and 4p is only viable if you invite friends -- that's a joke. And it's not just "not directly communicated," it's miscommunicated. Before accepting a match, I checked if it was timed, it said no. See here:

I don't think the turn timer is usually running when you're not there, so if that's what was going on in that one instance, it's just another bug to add to the pile.

Why when I'm moving a unit, some of the squares I can move to are a black colour?
I thought those denoted crit conditions are met?

Edit: ^^^

Yeah, an overall timer like that would be a better solution. Devs are active in this thread and already have QoL coming ASAP, but I agree with you for turn timers varying between quick play and invites matches being borked.

The moment you get Dragons the game becomes EZ mode. The AI literally does not know what to do against them. The Witches they make just Hex by lack of targets, making them easy prey for Alchemists who can also heal 2 HP for the low cost of 300 gold. The Commander just runs off because they can't engage, making advancing territory a cake walk. Golems burst into flames. Not even Md Tanks were that vulnerable to Bombers.

Cramming abilities onto units makes the experience a bit uneven.

I'm really liking this. It's not as polished as Advance Wars was, but it has a charm of its own, the writing is fantastic and I appreciate that they didn't make the game easy. It's going to take some practice to shave off time for more stars.

I love just how much content there is, too. I don't know how long the campaign is, but between that, arcade mode and the map/campaign editor, I don't think I'll be running out of stuff to play for a while and I'm definitely making a few maps of my own.

Then there's the multiplayer...

That final map on the first chapter killed me. Escorting Amercia to the other side of the map with the Forest faction and running away from that bat girl.

It took me well over 40 tries. Frustrated as I got, the game never felt like it would cheat. Unlike other games where you have RNG, the critical mechanics in this game feel really fair.

Also, having unlocked puzzle mode, it's easily one of the best pieces of side-content to be put in a game of this kind. Does AW have puzzle mode? Because it's really fun.

For $20, this game is fantastic value. Story mode is long, hard, but doesnt feel cheap (yet). Puzzle mode is a great distraction. Arcade mode for the casual symetrical games. Then map creator for endless replayability and MP (which I dont care to try)

Could have easily been $40.00. I hope the mods and Expansion DLC are in the works.

Put in a ton of hours on my steam version this weekend, still haven't touched campaign all that much, just tons of multiplayer.

Does the campaign only auto-save when starting a new mission? I completed 3-3, watched the cutscene, returned to the world map and then quit. Upon reopening the game, I'm back at 3-3... kinda annoying after how long it took to complete. I'll make sure I select a new mission next time.

Glad to read about free DLC; more contents are exciting but more QoL features are appreciated as well!

How is this game on easy mode? I generally like to play games on easy because I don't have a lot of time to play and don't like replaying content. Also, about how long is the campaign? IGN review said about a dozen hours but I saw someone earlier in this thread saying it took them 30 hrs. That's a huge difference.

There are no options for difficulty.
My bad then. Accessible on world map though.

Also I about blew my ears off just now. Have headphones plugged into my TV and started the game up and Holy shit. My TV is now set at volume 1, and in-game master at 3%, but this is still pretty loud.

What gives? Switching from stereo to headphones did nothing too. I know headphones plugged into a TV isn't conventional, but holy shit!

Anyone up for a match on map I made?

This game is so damn addictive for me. It's like Civ in that I'm like, ok one more turn, but then hours fly by. I was very unproductive this weekend to say the least. Kids are lucky they even got fed.

You have to press "save and quit" from the menu, I think. But I don't know, I'm pretty sure I did that once but it took me back to my very last turn of the previous mission I had played when I returned.

I love that every time you cycle through pages of the codex, the unit's race changes. Such a subtle and underappreciated touch.

Yeah, I just had the random turn ending bug happen to me. One turn, I was like "well, I guess I ran out of time." but then my very next turn it auto-ended after I moved one unit.

Fuckin' pissed too as I was totally gonna win! GAH

Long time fan of Advance Wars and was really excited for this but it hasn't really grabbed me as of 1-4. Can't place my finger on it but just feels enough on the sluggish side to be a bit tedious.

Also I wasn't expecting the aesthetic/narrative to be as much of a put off as it has been, I never expect much with the stories in AW games but the stock fantasy names/plot has me checking out.

Does anyone have any tips for completing Act 3 Mission 3 on normal? I was enjoying the game up until this level but it's such a ridiculous difficulty spike compared to everything before it and I don't really want to turn the difficulty down.

Really interested in the map editor but heard you cannot customize the characters.

This game would be an instant buy if i could make my own team and factions. re-using the same characters from the main campaign is a little dissapointing

Played a bunch this weekend. Just kind of cruising through campaign, on the Floran side missions right now.

Game is a little rough. Enemy commander AI seems degenerate, they often just run off into the woods when I'm advancing. Ends up taking several extra boring turns to pin them down.

Having fun with it tho. I really liked that mission where you had to se a wagon to evacuate waves of refugees. It was easy to do, but felt gratifying fighting on two fronts and executing the evacuation all at once.

Yeah I noticed that, it's nice.

Really loving the game. Played a ton over the weekend. I'm currently on 5-1. I'm getting S ranks on most of the missions.
Also played some multiplayer against a friend, which was great. We love playing with fog of war on. My only gripe (and it's kind of a big one) is that you can see the opponents gold, and you pretty much know what units they are making simply by watching their gold. If they could patch that or make it optional than it would be perfect.

That's a pretty great point, and I'm sure it's something they could manage to implement. Hopefully they notice this!

One of the QOL things from Fire Emblem that I miss here is highlighting the 'safe' zone, beyond the reach of enemy attacks. Checking the reach of everyone makes moving every unit a bit of a slog.

I have disabled the animations for the time being. I wish the feedback was better with it disabled. I'd prefer to reenable them but the battles are just so slow.

I'd love to see highlights on the tiles that would perform a critical attack. Either located next to X character, or for the Knights all the tiles at the fullest reach.

Do any other games manage fog of war in an interesting way? I would really like to put down observation markers (with a turn counter) on troops I observe. When playing multiplayer does the other side know when they've been spotted?

Having fun with it tho. I really liked that mission where you had to se a wagon to evacuate waves of refugees. It was easy to do, but felt gratifying fighting on two fronts and executing the evacuation all at once.
The wagon evacuation was my favourite mission so far, although I haven't played much further. It was nice to feel like there was a bit more of a purpose to the combat.

This might be a bit of a dumb questions but do crits also work defensively? Are my spearmen harder to defeat when standing next to each other?
