Former White House counsel Donald McGahn was a no-show Tuesday at a House committee hearing, infuriating Democrats who are ramping up calls to start impeachment proceedings against President Trump despite continued resistance from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

During an opening statement, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) vowed that his panel would eventually hear McGahn's testimony about alleged obstruction of justice by Trump "even if we have to go to court to secure it."

"We will not allow the president to block congressional subpoenas, putting himself and his allies above the law," Nadler said. "We will not allow the president to stop this investigation, and nothing in these unjustified and unjustifiable legal attacks will stop us from pressing forward with our work on behalf of the American people. We will hold this president accountable, one way or the other."

Democrats declined to press for a vote to hold McGahn in contempt of Congress, but Nadler suggested the move could be taken soon if "he does not immediately correct his mistake" of declining to appear.

The White House announced Monday that it would block McGahn from testifying, the latest act of defiance in the ongoing conflict between House Democrats and Trump.

and the USA continues to fall apart. We have one party who is actively working toward destroying the country and the other that is too afraid to do anything.

What does contempt even do? Put a bad mark on your resume? Unless there is actual jail time associated with ignoring a congressional subpoena, nobody cares.

Enough with the empty threats, start the machine up and let's get this moving.

So much awful precedent is being set by Trump right now.

Ignoring subpoenas is straight-up lawbreaking. Ordering everyone to ignore subpoenas is obstruction of justice.

Whenever the GoP scum is removed from power, if ever, some hardline checks and balances need to be permanently installed into the US Constitution that account for all the abuse of power Trump has carried out.

There can no longer be any vague legislation. It must be spelled out in specific detail and yet unknown future incursions must be theorycrafted into the Constitution so that we may never assume that individuals will always line up on the right side of justice if no rule is set.

Trump has shown that evil men with unchecked power will abuse that power.

When the dems are all a bunch of spineless fucks I guess you can do what you want. Lets just wait for pelosi to continue being a cowardly fuck and we can round this out by burying it and moving in. Setting shit up so when we get a shady Republican president who is actually smart, he is going to crush their stupid fucking asses into submission worse than trump and the current GOP ever could.

His lawyer sent CNN a message yesterday, which stated that he wouldn't be coming. The Dems knew this a day before the hearing... They better not be shocked.

OMG, a wag of the finger! The dreaded Strongly Worded Letter might be next!
Basically. They'll find him in contempt and nothing will be done. They'll refer it to the Justice Department and Barr will laugh and move on.

if this corrupt ass party is ever relieved of power, the game is switched up so far at this point that they will regret all these dirty diapers.

Yeah, I mean... its CRAZY. How can anyone just ignore a subpeona from the U.S. House of Representatives? There should be far more outrage over what is happening.

Damnit Nadler, this wasn't a mistake. A mistake is they put onions on your burger when you asked for none. This is criminal activity. Look I understand they want to be the party of holding up norms that existed before Trump and his associates destroyed them all, but they won't get anywhere with this administration if they keep this up.

McGahn went back to his old job. This is a ploy to get Jones Day back into Trump's good graces. Which means he's breaking the law to protect his money.

I don't know why they didn't just vote to hold him in contempt right away since he already said he wouldn't come yesterday they ought to have had the paperwork done and ready to go. And Nadler framing it as a mistake to be corrected by McGahn is worthless, he already made the mistake, use your power and punish him for it

Shocked that they would do something when they know they will face no consequences for it

Send in the Sergent-at-Arms and Capitol Police and arrest him. Finger wagging does nothing.
At this point, I don't see any other way to get people to give a shit about contempt of congress. They've talked about issuing fines, but that will just result in a lawsuit and if they want to land in court they can just sue and get a real subpoena in the first place

Really, fear is the only thing these people understand. And Dems are incapable of speaking it.

Dems should just assume that no one from this administration is going to follow the rules unless you enforce them.

If this shit keeps up, we deserve to fucking lose in 2020.

I'll hate it, but I can't blame a piece of shit for being anything but a piece of shit.

I can blame cowards who refuse to fight a piece of shit.
