Heya peeps.

I've been messing around with the Oculus Quest for quite a while now and have been enjoying the experience. From Beat Saber to Superhot VR, I think I'm in love.

Sadly, the Quest I've been playing on isn't mine and since returning it, I've been dying to jump back in on the VR wagon! So I wanted to throw the question over to you lot, which headset do you use and why? I've been really tempted to go out and pick up an Oculus Rift S since it seems both convenient and not too expensive but that Valve Index looks real good...

I'm also not too fussed about waiting a good few months to see what Vive eventually show regarding their Cosmos but once again, the Valve Index and those Knuckles controllers look fantastic! Just a bit expensive.

In any case, what headsets do you use and why? How often do you play VR games? Anything that made you stop playing or anything that made you jump back on?

Thanks for any suggestions!

PSVR here. I have a good computer, just not that good. For what it's worth, PSVR is a fantastic deal with tons and tons of games and experiences (and I upgraded to PSPro so resolution isn't that much of an issue anymore). It's not like I use it regularly (mainly because I have the old one and I have to switch HDMI cables or else HDR won't pass through), but I think it's been definetely been worth the price. VR is the biggest game changer in all the time I've been playing videogames.

I sometimes play on HTC Vive. Loved it at launch, and found some mind blowing experiences like Superhot VR and Lone Echo. I just didn't found another thing like that since that, and setting this all up (and putting things back too) is always something to consider. The recent wireless Oculus offer is really interesting in that sense.

I recently played Blood & Truth and although it was good fun, I wasn't the biggest fan of the PS headset its self. I just didn't find it to be that comfortable and the controllers you have to use are a bit lacking compared to the competition. Then again, its not that expensive to get into PSVR as far as I remember.

PSVR for 2 years and now mainly Oculus Rift.
Only use PSVR for exclusives now like Blood & Truth.
I would suggest Oculus because of their wonderful exclusives, sure you can use reVive but native support is always better.
Upcoming Lone Echo 2, Asgard Wrath, Insomniac's Stormland etc.

OG Oculus Rift here. I stopped using it for a while because I primarily play Monster Hunter World and my graphics card can't handle that and VR at the same time. Beat Saber brought me back into it though, that game is wild.

I'm considering an upgrade, but Rift S has too many compromises for me so I've put myself tentatively down for an Index. Next shipment is at the end of September though...

PSVR. Got it at launch, but honestly I dont' use it much anymore. I like it when I wear it, but there's an element of laziness keeping me from putting on the thing in the first place. Part of that comes from knowing there are often drift issues (much worse with certain games like Firewall, holy shit). That said I haven't even tried some of the newer heavy hitters like Astro Bot or Blood and Truth. Also, porn streaming and side loading vids got harder after littlstar started charging for that shit, so that's an incentive that is basically gone now.

At this point, I'm kind of saving my pennies for a Rift S and a new PC. I play flight sims like DCS so VR will add a huge level of immersion that I'm looking forward to.

Early last year, Windows partners realized they made way too many WMR sets and put them on sale for $200-$250. I got a Lenovo WMR set for about $220 and it came with WMR controllers. The sales for WMR haven't been very good since then. The WMR software was a shitty for a good 6 months or so, but both Steam and Microsoft fleshed our their support by mid 2018 and now WMR sets are on par (and basically completely compatible) with Oculus and Vive Software.

Looking back, this Lenovo WMR set has been the best bang-for-buck VR investment I could've made. All PC VR sets these days still hover around the $400 mark as opposed to the nearly half off deal I got. My Lenovo WMR set is better in some ways than the just-released Rift S, and a lot of people are catching up to the fact that the conveniences of inside-out tracking can outweigh the need for controllers to be tracked in typically unnecessary positions.

I'm riding out this Lenovo set until it dies. Like the Zune, WMR is just one of those Microsoft things that never got the traction it deserved despite being great after a few updates.

I was about to ask, does Oculus have most of the exclusives? I was still thinking about saving up for a while and getting the Index but if I can play near enough everything on the Steam store and then have the added bonus of Oculus exclusives then... I'm sorted I suppose? Also end up saving a ton of cash I guess.

I've owned them all since DK1, and the Quest is the only one I've stuck with. Tethered VR is a bummer, and seated tethered VR with PSVR IE doubly so.

PSVR for me. I've been really enjoying it. I had no plan to dive into VR so soon, but No Man's Sky VR got me to pull the trigger, and I've been enjoying a lot of the other VR games on the platform too! I'm addicted to Beat Saber, and Astrobots Rescue Mission is excellent. So many other really good VR titles. I didn't expect to fall in love with it like I have.

I've got both the PS VR and the Oculus Rift. The Rift for me was a much better user experience, mostly because I have the PC to run games better than PS VR can. I will say that the novelty wore off quickly for me, and I'm giving the kids the PS VR and using the Rift primarily.

Lone Echo was the best game I've played.

Samsung Odyssey+. The price is kind of ridiculous (regularly 299). The only negative is the fit, but that can mostly be fixed with a makeshift head strap. Euro / American Truck Sim is my go-to game in VR.

Had a Gen1 Rift and was considering between the Quest and the Rift 2.

Ended up with the Quest and don't regret it one bit. Graphics are more than OK, and the freedom in immersion is leagues above being tethered IMO.

That's the biggest gripe I have, to be honest. The PS Move controllers work fine enough, but that doesn't leave the fact that they're PS3-era tech not made specifically for VR. The Vive / Valve Index controllers are much better thought and have better tech. I'm curious though, what did you not like about the headset itself? Was it the weight, the way that it's attached? Whenever I have problems with it, it's mainly because I sweat a lot and I need to constantly take it out to clean it or else the lenses get steamy very quickly. Other than that, its most attractive point is the price, considering that for 300€, less than half of what most VR headsets cost, you can get a full set with controllers, camera, and maybe a game.

PSVR, i like the headset and the controllers are adequate, but i don't find the time to play it much, i'm still really looking forward to the PS5 improving the experience and eventually PSVR2 taking it up a level.

I got a Pimax 5k from the Kickstarter but I've barely touched it since my GPU isn't good enough. And I don't really want to upgrade because the GPU market had been trash for years.

Oculus is the only platform on PCVR that has exclusives, with more coming like the Darth Vader game.
There's a mod made by the community called revive, i never personally tried it, some say it's great, some say it's not good enough but I would imagine nothing beats native support of Oculus headset. I buy every VR games on Steam, only exclusives on Oculus store. Steam has native support for Rift too, so you will never miss out anything with Oculus platform really, even Viveport subscription (the VR game netflix subscription service) supports Oculus. Upcoming steam VR games will support Oculus headsets too.

And yea, Oculus exclusives are probably the only true AAA VR games in the PC VR market in my opinion.

Most VR software is indie-developed because of how small the market is; Oculus are really the only ones who invested money into having major studios do VR games, so those major games end up being exclusive.

I don't believe there are any Vive exclusives these days (someone can correct me if I'm wrong), so if you have a Rift, you essentially have access to everything through the Oculus Store and Steam.

Edit: I'm talking about PC VR above. There are of course a lot of PSVR exclusives that never see the light of day on PC.

They got a couple of studios early on to do decent exclusives like The Climb and Edge of Nowhere. There aren't that many, but there are some (Insomniac are releasing another one soon).

Thanks for the heads up! Seems Oculus might be the way forward, I am a bit bummed that the Oculus doesn't natively support the Index controllers but its not really a big deal since their Quest controllers feel great to use.

imo this would be an interesting poll. Right now I have a PSVR. Quest looks like a great package, but I'd wait to see how Oculus commits game development to it, because most of the existing Oculus library was designed for higher spec PCs.

PSVR is going to be noticeably clunkier than the Quest, especially the controllers. But Sony has some of the best VR games as exclusives. Considering you can get one for around $200, it's a no-brainer. Even with PSVR2 coming, you'll get your moneys worth.

Vive and PSVR. Only really turn on my PSVR for the exclusives since everything is so much better on Vive (plus my Vive has the wireless add on). Have an Index on the way as well.

Oculus Rift.

Bought it last Black Friday and haven't used it as much as I'd prefer for something that cost as much as it did. VRChat was the main motivator for me.

I plan at some point to buy other games like Beat Saber and Super Hot. Just not sure when.

I would love to get a wireless headset in the future that still utilities the power of the user's PC like the Wii U system did with the controller.

I've got a Pimax 8k, and I love its huge field of view - it feels so much more expansive, so much more like you are really in the game (its largest FoV is roughly double most VR headsets). I also have an Oculus Quest, and I love how convenient it is, I play that more than the Pimax, I now reserve the Pimax now for games that I really want to be immersed in (like Hellblade).

Here's my quick overview of recommended consumer VR headsets:
Next gen (all require setting up lighthouse sensors in your VR room, but have best-in-class head and controller tracking):
Pimax has almost double field of view of most other VR headsets, but is pricey and doesn't yet ship with required Vive controllers and lighthouses
HP Reverb has the highest resolution by far, but is held back by the less-than-great WMR controllers
Valve Index has the highest refresh rate, reportedly best controllers, and a slightly higher field of view than most headsets if you can get your eyes close enough. And quite expensive.

Current gen:
Oculus Rift S has great sensor-less tracking and controllers, and Oculus-exclusive PC games are native so just work out of the box with no hassle
Samsung Odyssey+ has a good resolution, comfort, and filtering to remove screen-door-effect, but the less-than-great WMR controllers and sensorless tracking
Vive is oldschool but has a wireless adapter you can buy, and a great audio headstrap with built-in headphones; Vive Pro is exactly the same but higher resolution and overpriced

And of course, Oculus Quest is the best portable/all in one VR headset

I'm using PSVR, it's cheap, easy to use and has great library.
Considering something for the PC too but everytime I look at all the stuff that is needed to connect to use them I get put off. I really want beat saber with custom songs though.

Rift. Fell out of my rotation a lot though. There are some fun VR experiences out there but most of them dont really interest me and the VR showcase at E3 did nothing for me. I think I'm ready for full body tracking as the standard for VR if anything.

HTC Vive, with an Index pre-ordered. The problem with VR is, once you get used to a high fidelity experience it's tough to go lower quality, so I am stuck on the cutting edge of expensive hardware! Foveated Rendering can't come quickly enough.

PSVR/RIFT/QUEST...

I'm gonna say you're going to want the Rift simply because of the controllers, And the visuals along with true actual VR games. PSVR is a fantastic entry though and has RE7 which holds up against real VR games because of the immersion/atmosphere/audio.

But yeah Quest is fantastic, But the software and visuals are't as good as Rift S, All depends on what you want now with you're VR experiences.

The Rift Controllers really are what makes it stand out and make it my main VR platform. Plus the exclusive titles are the best in VR in my opinion.
The Index seems cool but the price just seems ridiculous for a headset with no exclusive support.
PSVR is neat for what it is but in no way would you choose it over a Rift/Vive/Index if you already have the PC to run it.

I've got a launch Vive with Vive Wireless and the Deluxe Audio Strap. I still play it a lot and love it. I just finished Doom VFR and I'm about done with Budget Cuts, both lots of fun. I've also got the Index Knuckle Controllers on preorder, due to ship soon. I'm hoping No Man's Sky VR isn't too far behind those.

Wireless on the Vive is a game changer. Makes the whole experience so much more enjoyable. Just make sure you've got the CPU to back it up.

Launch PSVR, Gear VR, and Oculus Quest. I have a capable PC, but for some reason couldn't ever decide between Oculus and Vive.

Gear VR hardly counts, and I'll leave that one out. I vastly prefer the Quest to the PSVR, but the PSVR does have some great exclusives. I've been surprised at how big of a difference wireless makes with the Quest, and at how much better the tracking is. If money is not obstical, I have to image that the best solution is a wireless Vive Kit, but I've never tried it to confirm. That said, the Quest is a really good bang for your buck.

I have a Quest and PSVR. I used to have a Vive but stopped using it mainly due to constantly struggling with the cable. I rent so I can't do any mounting work so it was an annoyance. Thinking of the Index once we buy a house.

Rift CV1. Amazing all around. Immediately sold me on VR. Own over 100 games. I have so few complaints I'm not real incentivized to upgrade at this point, but I'd buy a Valve Index if I had to choose today. I wouldn't want to get a Rift S, I'd just save for an Index if my CV1 broke at this point.

I also own a PSVR for the exclusives, and I've enjoyed many of em. WipEout VR doing it for me lately.

I'd say Oculus Quest probably is the best all-around solution right now if you have the capable PC, using ALVR for streaming mostly replaces a Rift (sadly, doesn't seem to work with Rift exclusive titles). And of course all the Quest native stuff.

PSVR is still a great inexpensive solution, excellent library still growing fast, the only headset I own. Usage is based on the games I currently desire, there's so much more I could play if I could find the time. In the recent weeks, I was busy playing flat games though. Before that, I had times where I played VR exclusively for weeks.

After reading all the responses from this thread, I've decided to shelf the idea of getting an Index and instead go for a Rift S! It's not too expensive, has all the exclusives I want whilst still supporting most games on Steam and only requires one cable!

I also opened a poll too, sorry it took so long to do. Still fairly new to Era.
