Man oh man. I recommend AI: The Somnium Files, Clannad, Steins;Gate, Valhalla, Danganronpa, 999, ALL OF THEM

Looks like I have to get the S;G VNs then! Thanks for the responses.

Undecided about C;C. I'll wait to see more opinions on it.
Chaos;Child is hands down one of my favorite all-time VNs. Really enjoyed it, although I'll admit that if you can play Chaos;Head beforehand (which only has a buggy PC patch + port to newer engine that can be applied to , I'd recommend doing so. Familiarity with the first game enhanced my enjoyment of the story quite significantly.

Info for purchasing and patching Chaos;Head:
If you do decide to play Chaos;Head, you can purchase a digital copy on DLSite for 3300 yen, and then apply Di-Patch 2.5 and Chaotic;Head to it, so that it runs correctly on modern PCs.
I do hope that we eventually get an English release of Chaos;Head NoAH one day though.

Came across these two that don't seem to be very popular but have a cool premise. And cheap to boot!

Oh hey this one is on sale too. I had seen it before and it looks really neat.

All I'll say is that I think you're giving the game far less credit than it deserves, Dorothy is a well written character that enjoys her job, Glitch City is a cruel, seedy dump full of illegal business dealings and they make it pretty clear early on that her intentionally underage appearance is a problem. You can have thematically uncomfortable content if it is handled correctly and VA-11 does that, characters are far more nuanced than the average VN - particularly the main character Jill. Danganronpa as a series is significantly more problematic than VA-11.
I appreciate that, but comics/animation and games (especially visual novels) already have a huge problem with characters that are stated to be adults but drawn to look underage, and I'm not currently interested in exploring the nuances of that while it's such a common issue still. And I'm not remotely interested in Danganronpa either.

Is there an easy way to find visual novels that have gameplay segments, i.e. something more than just reading? Ace Attorney is an excellent example of what I mean.

Japanese games like that are often designated Adventure or ADV rather than visual novel. Searching Steam you can also select the visual novel tag and then select additional tags to narrow it down.

I don't know if there's a specific term for that, but if you see kinetic novel or kinetic VN in a description, that's the opposite of what you're looking for, i.e. no interactivity.

The Steins;Gate VN is really good, and has quite a bit of stuff that the anime doesn't. I'd definitely recommend playing it, though it's not 100% necessary.

Steins;Gate 0, on the other hand, is a must. The Steins;Gate 0 VN isn't as linear as the first VN, so a lot of events were shuffled around or cut for the anime adaptation. Definitely play the VN.

If you can play Chaos;Head before Chaos;Child, do it, but it's not completely necessary. I played C;C first, then C;H, and yeah, it's definitely better to play C;H first, but I still loved C;C. The chaos series is definitely more divisive than S;G, but I loved it. Just don't watch either of the chaos anime adaptations, they're not good at all.

Holy crap, I'm not alone! AI pissed me off so much. The graphics are great minus the animations (though they're a ton better than ZTD), the soundtrack is fantastic, and the concept was great, but the QTE sequences ruin the game's tone and the porn mags stop being funny after the first scene. I just couldn't finish it.

Do you think Steins Gate is worth, even if I never watched the anime? Is there any gameplay involved?

Explain why this game is brilliant without spoiling it at all. I have it on PS4, but haven't gotten around to playing it.
I'm a few hours into 428 myself, so I feel somewhat confident in explaining the appeal without broaching spoilers.

In a typical VN, the protagonist has a lot of power in where the story goes, as they're the only one that can truly make choices. When they do this, some plot points can fall by the wayside, and who knows what happens to characters who aren't the focus of the route you're on, but it's a fun time and the games don't typically worry about this.

In 428, there are five protagonists who each have the power of a typical protagonist.

Chaos ensues.

They accidentally screw both themselves and other people over in various bad endings that you have to guide them out of, all whilst a lot of other weird things are happening. Shibuya *Scramble* is very apt lol.

It's really good despite that! Great visuals, music, writing and production quality otherwise. Also very meaty.

It's on my wishlist, I'll probably check it out at some point but I love voice acting, downloading the PS3 patch for Umineko to add voice acting made it so much better imo

Raging Loop is a really good mystery VN, most directly comparable to games like Umineko and Higurashi. There ARE decisions to make but there's not many routes and they have an enforced playing order so it mostly functions as a very linear game regardless. It probably has one of the most unique protagonists too it's by far one of the best VNs released in the last year.

Bought Nurse Love Syndrome (I hope it's just as batshit crazy as Addiction), Pygmalion of Overlapping Shadows, and Fatal Twelve.

Give me Yuri Mangagamer, I will devour ALL of it!

Hoooly shit 80% off Shibuya Scramble. It's one of the best VN's ever and also one of the most expensive VN's ever, so if you don't have it now would be the time to buy.

This game is so good and it's super cheap. Please give it a go. It's a bunch of short scenarios but it's well written and has some very interesting points about life and mortality. It's pretty damn funny too.

Buy Umineko yall

One of the most engrossing VNs I've played in a long time. It's long but it was also so addicting that it somehow still felt shorter than other long VNs I've played like DRV3. Still need to play Chiru though.

Heaven Will be Mine, the best VN on Steam, is on sale:

Most of Ebi-Hime's work is also on sale - Rituals in the Dark is especially good

And Heart of the Woods is another overlooked recent release:

Oh, has anyone played this? Could you share some impressions maybe? I like a good detective story, but this one's apparently quite gory which is making me a little unsure. I didn't love that about Chaos Child.

07th-Mod

KnS is good, but is very, very gory, like you said. I would also say it plays with emotions heavily, I found myself pretty drained after playing BUT I felt like it was also very worth it. It's an interesting setting (post WW2 Japan), there's cool mechanics like investigating as well. One of my favorite mechanics is the notebook system, the MC keeps a notebook and with every new addition in the story you can check up and be up-to-date with the story.
There's also sex, but it's really all over the place and easily skippable (what I did, I'm not there for it). You could take the game and remove all the sex scenes and nothing of value would be lost, I feel like it's just a product of the time it was produced.

Umineko is really a masterpiece

The music still makes me sad

The House in Fata Morgana is on sale too.
The best VN I've ever played, please don't miss out on this one.
Other good choices are Umineko as many other people already mentioned and 428:Shibuya Scramble.

Was pretty disappointed by Raging Loop. Bland cast and super bad true ending.

Chaos;Child is about 30 hours too long (it's 50ish total), but there are some really fab sequences in it. I dunno if I'd recommend it overall, but/shrug.

Yeah I think it'd be at least a bit more palatable if it didn't have so much pointless stuff in it. SG has some of that too, but it didn't seem as bad and at least front loaded. The plot also just went off the rails in a way that seemed so cheap.

+1 to Fata Morgana. Didn't even like visual novels before I played it. Now I'm in there.

Yes it doesn't shy away from the gore in places, I'd say it's not overly loaded with them either though. It's not really a "Fun" VN but if you're looking for something a more serious and more grounded revolving around a detective MC give it a go. In my top 10 adult VNs, that title theme is pure bliss.

A shame the other Innocent Grey titles were barred from steam.

I'm about to finish Ghost Trick for the first time on iPad so I feel like this sale came at the perfect time.

I'm definitely interested in 428: Shibuya Scramble so I'll be getting that.

One thing I am torn about though is whether to get the Ace Attorney trilogy on Steam or iPad. Performance for Ghost Trick on my iPad Pro wasn't the best. It wasn't a deal breaker but it'd be annoying if there were similar problems in the Ace Attorney games on iPad. But the portability of the game is really nice. On the other hand, I'd like to see more Ace Attorney games on Steam so I want to support this platform. Has anyone tried both platforms and have a clear preference?

Raging Loop is a great visual novel with a wet fart of an ending. Still, definitely recomment it, one of the most "different" visual novels to be released in the West for the past couple of years, at least on consoles.

I'll just get S;G + S;G0. I think it's very likely I will enjoy those since I already like the anime. If I do end up enjoying the VNs, I'll be more interested in the other VNs by the same developer. Right now it's too much of a leap for me to buy the C;C VN because I like the S;G anime. Doesn't help that the VN isn't universally loved.

This won't work as well on unreliable connections out of your home, but you can try remote play from Steam to iPad. I do it all the time to play VNs on PS Vita. It works quite well for VNs in particular because the extra input latency isn't an issue.
