Devil Halton's Trap
Worth mentioning that, according to Novectacle and the tweet linked below, it does come with both A Requiem for Innocence, and Reincarnation - as well as 'additional short stories'. I'm just hoping Reincarnation comes to Steam also.

Novectacle will likely have to remake Reincarnation later with only assets they own/create since another company, Dramatic Create, helped them make it for the Vita release (meaning contract issues prevent a PC upgrade).

On a sidenote, it's not really a game, but more a pre-order bonus that was a recent get.

I managed to track down a sealed copy of Rance VI's bonus disc at not an insane price. Found it even cheaper than opened copies which is why I was able to get it.

Essentially it allows for Satsu from "Daiakuji" to join which is really neat. I might play through the whole game again. It's the perfect excuse to do so since it's one of the best entries in the series. Also it must have been a relief for them that they didn't have to do addition ero CGs, because Rance canonically isn't into loli.
Daiakuji is on my to-play list. I have seen Satsu design in the past and find her design likeable.

BTW, I finally got Rance 01 and Hikari no Umi no Apeiria from Suragaya as they are doing a 10% discount sale. As you can see, the original price of Rance 01 is low enough so the discount is icing on the cake. Already started playing it and found it pretty good. Has to grind a bit early on but I found the grinding is fun. Progress-wise, I have just finished off the bandit leader. On the other hand, I have said a long time ago that I will go through the works of Shuusei Hanno. Hikari is the first of the playlist. It is still quite expensive (around 6000 yen). But I think it's price will not have a big drop in the near future, so I decided to pull the trigger when discount lasts.

Oh, congrats! 01 is fun, but very simple. They even had to create more characters or retcon past ones to play a larger role which worked out well.

Also, you might have seen a map of "The Continent", that was them planning very far off ahead even in the original game. You finally see the whole world in the final game, so it's quite a trip. 01 and 02 take place in just one city/town, but that expands in later games.

Have fun. (Sill is adorable)

Very interesting, I have noticed they intentionally put in lores of other countries during conversations. I always love this type of story telling in games so I am having a great time with it.

And yeah, the core mechanics are simple but fun to play. Arts are really good, btw. Even better than I have imagined.

Hi I'm guessing you're located in Japan, but in case you're not, how are you getting them to ship overseas (if that's what you're doing).

I used to order from suruguya with a forwarder but they stopped taking all foreign payments. Last time I ordered they said it had to be paid from a Japanese bank account.

I am living in Japan now, and have no experience buying from Surugaya overseas. I would rather recommend Mandarake instead, if you have not used it before.

Not who you asked, but you could try another service like White Rabbit Express maybe? There are several companies that wouldn't mind taking foreign payments and purchasing the items for you. It would be on the expensive side (vs just the item's cost by itself) but at least you'd be able to get the items.

I guess I might as well expand upon this. Suruga-ya has always been a pain to deal with even back when they allowed foreigners to purchase things.

If you see something that you have to get from them, I would recommend a 2-in-1 purchasing and forwarding service. Treasure-Japan is a solid one.

Like Jim said, Mandarake is usually no hassle, also if Amazon themselves is handling the product you can order internationally as well.

I have no idea why Amazon doesn't count eroge under pornography, but that does mean it's fair game for imports. Only found out about that a few weeks ago.

Yeah I'm just gonna try out Mandarake like you guys suggested. Just wasn't sure if there was some way to get Surugaya to accept a foreign payment that I didn't know about.

Also like you guys said, it's too expensive to use a proxy so I prefer to use just the forwarder, at most.

When did Suruga-ya stop accepting non-Japanese accounts? That's a huge problem for Japanese PC preservation in the west, but it's news to me somehow.
It happened sometime last year. Prior to that I ordered pretty often from Surugaya just using my Amazon Prime card (because it doesn't charge foreign transaction fees), but then all of a sudden they started demanding a Japanese credit card or bank account for payments. I had an order of about $600 cancelled cause I couldn't provide that payment method.

Hey, I'm sure that this is asked plenty, but could someone recommend a visual novel? I've tried repeatedly to get into the genre (medium?), but the general fanservice and trope heavy nature of what I have played have been repeated turn offs. I particularly dislike the treatment of female characters, but apparently that isn't representative of the genre. The ones I've tried but didn't enjoy are Clannad, Fate/Stay Night, Steins Gate, VA-11 Hall-A, 999, Danganronpa 1, Muv-Luv 1, The Letter, and Fata Morgana.

Those works I mostly quit, having disliked the writing style for being either too flowery, full of fanservice, or too full of anime cliches. There was one I enjoyed, really enjoyed: Saya No Uta. Still, it was a bit too pornographic.

Any suggestions?

Honestly, after 428 I'm not sure you'll have much luck with the medium. Policenauts might be fine for you, but if a visual novel isn't an eroge, it's bound to either be flowery(nakige/for fujoshi), or full of anime cliches.

It's just inherently part of it. Good luck though.

Yeah, I would strongly recommend 428.

Umineko is incredibly important to me, so I'd recommend it if you can stomach the length but if given how varied the things you've bounced off of are... I dunno? 428 feels like the safest bet given how different it is.

and, well, it's also just excellent

And that might just be the one I check out then. Any advice?
It's a non-H visual novel, though there are minor anime tropes in the beginning that fade away as the story goes on, only kind of resurfacing at the end. The strength of the cast and story also make it one of the most adored VNs by the community. I'd say some advice would be to take a day or two day break between episodes so you don't burn out and can digest what happened because it's a long ride.

I've not played any of them so I'm probably totally off base, but isn't Higurashi supposed to come before Umineko? Or is that not the case?

Technically yes, and a character or two might be more interesting if you played Higurashi, but Umineko by and large can be experienced without Higurashi. I do hear that reading Higurashi first enhances the experience, but the fact of the matter is that it'll probably be 2020 before Higurashi's Steam release is complete.

I remind to anyone interested in Baldr Sky that we're likely to get news regarding that title by the end of AX, so I guess Sekai Project and maybe Denpasoft.
We're also likely to get a date for the official release of Majikoi from JAST as in the past months they had the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face when it came of teasing the game was close to releasing.

Kikokugai is by the Saya no Uta author and has a non-18+ version with really good VA and SFX.

Wait, this is true?

Looking at the disliked games, I'm not sure about Chaos;Child recommendation since I also remember it being quite "anime" but 428 is an solid recommendation.

it's been a very long time since i've played it so I don't really remember how tropey it is but maybe you'd like Remember11? it's got somewhat of a weak ending but it's very well paced and has an atmosphere to it I think you'd maybe like,no porn stuff in it either and I don't really remember for sure but pretty sure it doesn't really have much in the way of fanservice

I am approaching the ending of the first route of Fate/Stay Night (at least I think so, since I currently am at the Day 14). First of all, I must say I am really liking the characters, who are the strong point of this visual novel. The focus of the first route is clearly on Shirou and Saber and I am really appreciating how their characters are developed: they are quite similar and despite this each one only finds his/her own defects on the other. About both of them there are several pending questions, which I suppose will be answered in the next routes (or in the last day, maybe). Also Tohsaka and Archer are quite interesting, I suppose that the next routes will focus more on them and maybe on other secondary characters, like the Council President and Sakura, Shirou's friend who is present only in the first days.

I have, however, some questions for whom played both Realtà Nua with patch and without (at least, with), to understand how I should continue to play the next two routes. Since these questions could have spoilers and potentially NSFW (I will try not to include as much as possible, since I imagine who will read will understand to what I refer), I put the questions under spoiler.
I am playing with the patch which introduces the H scenes from the original version. I played the first one, and I am currently in the middle of the second.
First of all, I didn't expect so many CGs. It seems they are basically half of the total CGs, which is unfortunate, since I would have liked many other CGs for important moments in the relationship between Saber and Shirou, or for the flashback about Saber's past. This could be a first problem, because for example on Thursday I played around 40 minutes in the university labs where there are also other students, while on Friday while I was in tram.. and I was lucky that the scenes happened afterwards (even though in both case I was careful, not showing the Surface screen in case something unexpected showed), because I thought that it would have been black screen and than just a wall of text to read. So, my question is: is it the same for all the other H scenes? Will they be full of CGs?

Then, about the two scenes I read. The first one has, after all, a meaning for the relationship between Saber and Shirou. Or, better to say, the fact they had sex has a clear impact on their feelings. The author could have avoided to include Tohsaka, for example. Instead, I am not liking the second scene. What Saber did is out of character, in my opinion. Again, having sex in that moment could be ok... but that preliminaries were needed? I don't think so. Again, my question is: will the next scene more similar to the first one (which for me would be ok to read) or to the second one?

Finally, last question and also the more important. If I play without the patch, is there an impact on the story? Because, let's say Saber and Shirou do not make sex in the first scene... How, then, their feelings would change so suddenly? Would there be a good explanation, or the scenes which replaced the H scenes make the character development worse?

I'm glad you're enjoying fate stay night it only gets better from here with UBW. As for your questions, the first scene is bullshit and should be skipped as it does nothing for the story in general. I don't remember if the first scene changes their relationship as they get closer later on. The second scene is treated better and makes more sense, but if you didn't enjoy the first scene then you're safe to skip the second one. These scenes don't really matter until Heaven's Feel so you're safe to skip them if you don't like them.

The "better" way to enjoy each story IMO is to use the "all ages" versions of the scenarios for Fate and UBW, and the "18+" version for Heaven's Feel.

Mostly just because the porn in the Fate and UBW routes is very forced, and the replacement scenes actually feel more in character. Using the first scene in the Fate route for example: It doesn't make much sense that Rin wouldn't have mentioned to Shirou that he could have just had sex with Saber before this scene, especially since that would also mean she has a chance of getting in bed with Saber. It totally makes sense that Rin would not tell Shirou about a risky method of forging a connection with Saber that could make his nerves explode, because she knows he'd go for it in a heartbeat. In fact one of the more amusing differences between the 18+ and RN versions is that in the 18+ version Shirou's like "I gotta have sex? I dunno Rin, that sounds really hard" but in the RN version he's like "I gotta put my life at risk? Heck yeah let's do this thing".

On the other hand, the H scenes in the Heaven's Feel route actually work (they're still badly written but the context works at least) because Shirou and Sakura actually want to have sex just to have sex, and the magic justification is just an excuse. The movies actually do something pretty cool where they use the RN version of the first scene, but for the second one they actually have sex.

Thanks to both of you. I felt the same, that the sex scenes were quite forced in the first route (in my opinion, the second one even more because in that case Saber feels more out-of-character than in the first one), for this reason I tried yesterday evening to play again the same scenes, but in the "all ages" version. I must say that, as I thought, the replacement for the first scene doesn't contribute to the development of the relationships between Saber and Shirou as the other, whereas I found the second "all ages" scenes quite nice and pleasant to read. So, at the end,I am still undecided for the next routes. Since I often play outside from home, I suppose it will be better to have the "all ages" version when I am not at home on and then, if I feel some scenes are forced, I could watch the original scenes at home when there is no one - because the CGs are really detailed (and also quite numerous), I didn't imagine it and I was surprised when I found out.

In any case, I am sure that if FSN was being developed and released nowadays, thay would have find alternative ways to write the story without the sex scenes and avoiding also the replacement
trasferring mana with Magic Circuit is clearly a replacement to have an "all ages" version
I suppose it is clearly a VN "child of that time", which is in part unfortunate because the rest of the story is really well written, Saber and Shirou are characterized very well (in the first route, at least) and there are still so many answered questions that I feel I would like to continue even with a faster pace than I can (which it happens when I really appreciate a VN).

Not very nice to spoil the specifics for someone that is playing for the first time.

Don't worry, it was already quite clear to me that
each route focuses on a specific girl: Saber in Fate, Tohsaka in UBW, Sakura in HF... and, since Sakura basically is completely absent from Fate route, I am really interested to find out her role in this war in the next two routes

Any details on this? It IS Kemco after all, but actually looks interesting?

Hey, nice that this is getting localized after all (and glad they didn't stick with the title "Rei-Jin-G-Lu-P" for the West, hehe). I never got around to playing it but I heard good things about the game. There also was this Era thread with positive impressions.

edit: Raging Loop had a physical release in Japan on PS4. Hope PQube does one for the localized version as well.

Oh, that's being translated? The game has been on my radar (Steam wishlist) for awhile so it's welcome news, though no PC sucks.

They according to their press release:

PQube and developer KEMCO are excited to announce that the psychological horror visual novel Raging Loop will release physically and digitally in Europe and North America for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 this year!

Ah, I was wondering if the weirder version of the title meant it was about Werewolf; glad to see that it's the case and that it seems good. Time loop stuff will always grab my attention to begin with.

Guess I'll be looking forward to that, hmm.

I was hesitant at first since it's Kemco, but I've seen a few people praising the game. Plus, it's a horror VN. We need more of those.
