Can't say I'm fond of the deus ex machina in Utawa Mask of truth endgame.

I would suggesting checking out ep. 8 manga next, it's basically a remake of ep. VIII. Some of the side stories like 34's diary are interesting, though it's a bit late for that now (They were originally published with the earlier episodes).
Question about the Umineko manga
Is there 'how dunnit' scene (ala Detective Conan etc) in the Umineko manga? Tbh I'm kinda annoyed that the how dunnit scene in episode 7 was pretty much just a summary haha...

Oh and regarding episode 7 I have a question that still confusing to me
The culprit mentioned that if Battler came to family conference 1 year before of after the 1986 family conference, then the tragedy will be avoided. Why is that?

Yes, everything is laid clear and you get further character development for the culprit and other characters.

Her relationship with George wasn't as strong in 1985, so Yasu wouldn't have felt like fate had screwed her one last time. Meanwhile in 1987 she would have already told George the truth and killed her other personas, therefor there would have been no need for a duel.

Umineko

Episode 7 explains all of the how dunnits and the who dunnits. Episode 8 is the epilogue for the "1998" stuff.
Not sure I agree about 7, they just say which are illusions and which are real...

Yeah I heard the manga has how dunnits for ep7 too so I'll probably check the manga. Thanks for the heads up about 8. What's 34's diary?

Though just yesterday someone translated Umineko Tsubasa, which includes all the side stories. I can't link the patch here but you should be able to find it with google.

Great I'll read the manga at some point then,
I used to make do with an forum member's analysis on vndb forum :(

That makes sense, thanks.

Even if the whole of Mask of Truth was a dud (it isn't), the game would still be worth a playthrough due to this track:

Finished reading the kinetic horror VN 'Neighbor', that atomsk eater mentioned previously. Briefly, and to avoid spoilers, the story centers around a woman who moves into an apartment building and quickly discovers that something is off about her next-door neighbor.

Overall it was a decent, if somewhat cliche, horror story, but one that made good use of sparse sounds and visuals to create an eerie atmosphere. However, it only took me 2 hours to read at max text speed and without waiting for the spoken lines. And while I am glad to say that the story has no filler, it does make the full price ($15) feel a bit steep.

ETA: I forgot to mention that while I did not spot any technical or textual problems, the newspaper clippings shown in the game have visible spell-checker squiggles and the text itself can be hard to read.

How does Chusingura 46+1's translation fare against the average quality of English fan translation? I've finished chapter 4 and I think it's pretty darn terrible. I also believe Google translation is involved. Some sentences make no sense, and small grammar mistakes are everywhere. Not to mention it's dry overall.

It's very low quality, which is why the release never got much attention from the English scene.

Alright beat Chusingura. Chapter 5 is already incomprehensible as is, now with the gibberish translation. It's like a puzzle game.

Also, has anyone here played Forest? How is the quality of the translation?

If someone told me back in 2017 that this would get a Steam release, I'd laugh them off so hard...

So any impression? I've always been curious about alicesoft, but Rance is not for me. Can't stand a protagonist whose action is dictated by his lower half of the body.

I reallt hope Evenicle gets more sales. I cannot recommend this game enough. It has great character design, endearing characters, dialogue that will make you laugh, and nice lewd scenes.

Overall entertaining, just make sure to check the vndb tags to see if it's for you.

Evenicle seems like the first real legit title of that type to make it on Steam. It's a really big deal, it kind of deserves its own thread but I'm sure it would be locked lol.

Evenicle was on the first page of the global top sellers ( game filters disabled) at some point, in the lower half though, still good considering it's niche among niche games.

Opened my JP copy of Cho Dengeki Stryker and got through the prologue. I am surprised.
I did not expect the prologue to be this sad. I originally assumed the kid grows up and becomes a superhero, not the superhero was summoned to the world in expense of the kid's memories. The kid is basically wiped out from the Earth, and his body is now occupied by the hero, holy shit. This memory collector has to be the final boss, right?

I've been working my way through a few shorter VNs, so I thought I'd collect my thoughts in one post:

The first was Adolescent Santa Claus (VNDB), a short, free kinetic VN about a Santa that has fallen on hard times:

It is the story of a young man who is visited by Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Except that Santa Claus turns out to be a schoolgirl. And she wants the protagonist to pay his debt?

It took me a mere 15 minutes to read, so it is something that you can easily read through if you need a break from a longer work. The quality was also surprisingly good for a free VN, with high quality CGs and Santa being fully voiced. The story itself is nothing special and doesn't quite manage to land its moral message, but it was funny (and short) enough that I would recommend giving it a read.

The second was The Miskatonic (VNDB), a humorous HP Lovecraft inspired VN with a great art-style:

The story is that of Charlotte LeStrange, a witch with magic eyes, who, upon joining Miskatonic University as a security guard, ruins everything.

Unfortunately, the writer/artist behind this project apparently lost his programmer sometime after the Kickstarter concluded, and you can tell that this is a one-man project. On the technical side there is no option for text-speed (it is much too slow for my taste), you can only use your mouse to forward the dialog, and there is no log of read text, nor any fast forward button. In addition, I noted several rather obvious typos in the beginning of the game and there was some rather clumsy dialog here and there. Sound design was also lackluster, exemplified by one repeated scene with a TV-static effect that was entirely silent. In addition, the story arch is not the greatest and ends with an obvious setup for a sequel. Length was just over 2 hours, but it would probably have been even shorter if not for the slow text speed.

But despite all this I found the VN to be quite an enjoyable read. As I indicated above I am quite fond of the art-style and the writing itself was also quite funny. It is also quite cheap (only $6), and I say that it is worth picking up for anyone who'd like a humorous take on the Cthulhu Mythos.

The third was Koropokkur in Love ~A Little Fairy's Tale~ (VNDB), a(nother) short kinetic VN recently Kickstarted by MangaGamer:

It is the story of 3 "fairies" who enter human society, the trouble they cause, and the man running a maid cafe whom they end up working for.

The premise of this VN sounded cute, so I ended up backing it on a lark. In the end the story was indeed cute (even if quite predictable), there were a lot of funny moments, and the music was nice. The art-style is not the best, IMO, but it somehow grew on me as I read through of story. The writing was also quite polished, though one scene did leave me scratching my head:
Did the text ever mention that Haru conjured additional maids? They seemed to just show up in that scene.

Technically the VN was mostly fine, but could have used an option for text-box opacity. A bigger problem was that a number of lines automatically transitioned into the next scene, resulting in my having to check the log to see what I missed when the fast text speed I used resulted in near-instant transitions. It also lacked a visual end-of-line indicator, which resulted in my sitting and waiting at empty text-boxes a couple of times.

Despite that, of the 3 VN mentioned so far, this was probably the one I enjoyed the most.

The final one was Saya no Uta/Song of Saya (VNDB), which another is a horror VN with an Lovecraftian bent, but one decidedly less light-hearted than The Miskatonic:

It follows the story of a medical student, who upon awaken in a hospital after an accident finds his senses twisted and the world as it appears to him transformed into a twisted nightmare. Every surface covered in gore, fragrant smells transformed into foul odors, and living beings appearing as hideous monstrous, twisted forms. Every living being, that is, except Saya.

This one was a really amazing read, with a great story and writing, as well as fantastic visuals and sound, in terms of music, voices, and ... other sounds. The combination of these qualities resulted in a deeply unsettling experience, one which I would strongly recommend to anyone looking for something of that nature. The VN was also highly polished from a technical perspective, taking me just short of 3 hours to read.

Putting aside the unambiguous praise, this is also an 18+ VN that I had heard described as one that did H-scenes well. Most scenes did indeed play an important role in the story and were succinctly written, qualities that are often absent from such scenes. However, the presentation still felt pointlessly pornographic (some scenes in particular), which sadly makes this a yet another VN that I can only recommend to a fraction of the people I know who would otherwise enjoy the story.

Pretty much anything Alicesoft makes is worth playing(no bias), it just depends on what you're into:

Evenicle is good for starters, especially for people who can't get into Rance.

toushin toshi and its sequels are also great classics with more agreeable protags.

Beat series is top of the line for nukige.

there's also the benefit of unlike Rance, those series don't change genres/battle mechanics almost every entry.
Or just play Rance for Shizuka like everyone should do. And 5D is a sight to behold.
