Video Shows Driver Plowing Into Black Lives Matter Protesters In Times Square

"I'm in shock. I'm just happy to be alive right now said one protester."

The driver of a black Ford Taurus rammed into a crowd of protesters marching against police brutality in Times Square on Thursday night, leading to multiple injuries.

While several people in the crowd claimed the vehicle was an unmarked police car, a spokesperson for the NYPD told Gothamist they "investigated and discovered it was not." The spokesperson said the driver was not apprehended at the scene.

Qaaree McDaniel, 23, said he was working as "security detail" for the protest when the driver crashed into the crowd. "I saw people getting hit, so I'm trying to get out of the way. Luckily I made it out just in time, but the car hit my bike, and my bike hit both of my legs," he said.

"Just seeing how cops reacted, how they were so passive about it, it goes to show you where they stand," McDaniel added.

Hundreds of marchers had gathered in Times Square to denounce the killing of Daniel Prude, a Black man who suffocated to death after Rochester Police placed him in a hood and kneeled on his back earlier this year.

Pretty scary stuff, though I don't trust the NYPD about the car not being one of theirs.

I mean if we take enough composites from the video stills, we can easily make out the license plate number and then you'll pretty quickly find out if it was a police vehicle.

So here's what happens. Nobody died, so NYPD is going to drag their feet and act like they know nothing even though we are talking Times Square where in a post 9-11 world, has extensive CCTV surveillance they have full immediate access to.

Hopefully someone with enough footage will be able to figure out the license plate number and connect it to the NYPD. Journalists will inquire, NYPD will initially give another statement saying they are still doing an internal investigation. If the story gets real press, they give an excuse that the car was on some other detail and shouldn't have been involved in the protests (maybe circle back to anti-terrorism excuse since it's time square) and they don't know HOW it happened.

Our local pols act outrage, but the people who can make a difference...our Mayor and our Governor, defer to the police chief who promises if anybody acted wrong they will be punished, you have his word *thug tear*

So now it's a real story, so journalists start inquiring, NYPD fights all the requests, basically tearing the freedom of information act in front of people's faces (even when the judge sides with people seeking the inquiry the NYPD generally stalls using dog ate my homework excuses).

So now we are months in, the city has probably started settling some of the lawsuits for the injured and MAYBE MAYBE quietly a detective that still hasn't been publicly named lost 3 days of vacation during all of this as a 'punishment' but still gets promoted because all his brah cop friends higher on the totem pole thought what he did was badass ("I would have done the same thing!").

And this is how a relatively diverse, "reformed" police department continues to be a blight on the world.

Man you guys always suck at covering things up.

I mean, I know you don't care about the optics, but you don't have to pour gasoline on yourselves and light it every time.

It's disturbing how blatant they are now, it's been shown that there are no repercussions so it's basically open season for them.

So this is twice now that the NYPD has driven into protesters, right? I mean recently?

Also why the fuck are they escorting and protecting pro-trump protesters? I mean I know why, but jesus.

Well, that second video removed all doubt, as it basically extends the first video by an additional minute.

Surely this will be a swift investigation, and the appropriate punishments will be handed out to all involved.

I don't understand what their idea was behind this. Why are there like 30 cops protecting that car? Why did they need to load people into the backseat if the point was just to run over protesters two blocks away? More weight for the car?

Did the police benevolent society have a raffle where 4 lucky winners get to ride in an armored Taurus that runs over protesters?

Not America
There are words I would type here to convey my feelings but I would be banned.

So the most polite way to putting it would be, given the cops have no interest in de-escalating the situation and in fact, from the video, looks to be doing quite the opposite, perhaps it is time for more protesters to be wearing (at least) body armors and face shields.

NYPD claimed it wasn't one of theirs. Could just be a cop LARPer who bought it at auction. Or they could be lying. I don't know which answer I think is worse.

What the hell? I'm listening to 1010 wins as I'm getting ready for work right now and when they did a report on it, the police commissioner said they're investigating, would like witnesses to come forward, especially anyone who was hurt, and they'd "really like to know who was in the vehicle" and they "believe multiple were in the vehicle". =/

How is it that nothing can be done when democrats are the majority in the city?

The party has nothing to do with the control/power the cops have - legally - by way of their union and the laws governing policing in NYC. Only way to stop this is to destroy the police unions and destroy those LEO pensions and such. Only way to stop this is with the constantly-discussed basket of reforms. Take your pick - no more qualified immunity, mandatory always-on bodycams, nationwide blacklist for violent/disciplined cops, getting rid of all the supremacists in all forces, etc

(EDIT: also the cops literally formally endorsed Trump, so they are explicitly/on the record as supporting this and related pro-Trump/counter-protest activity. This is precisely what they want to do, how could you stop them?)

The piece of shit who killed Heather Heyer in Charlottesville is serving a life sentence, without possibility of parole, plus 419 years stacked on top of that.

The situation in the US is getting worst by the day. I hope the citizens make the right choice when it comes to voting otherwise things will keep getting uglier and this might give some bad ideas to the rest of the world.

This predates Trump. It'll take more than voting to solve these problems.

I agree but this can't be changed overnight. Already replacing the president could be considered a good step in the right direction. Not saying that Biden would be great, bit I cannot honestly imagine him being worst.
Just read the other piece about the Portland suspect getting killed by a law enforcement hit team. This is effed up... When you think it can't go lower...
Hopefully, some of the US partners will start asking for accountability, the same way the US asked for it from Syria and multiple countries in the past. Maybe the day Black / left wing / minorities citizens start seeking asylum in Europe due to their lives being endangered (which they are), other countries will step up to the plate. All I can say is that, seen from Europe, the stories are so washed out it is not even funny. There is very little focus on the situation developing in the US while people are killed.
