What is this thread about?

I created this thread because we didn't have a serious thread about video game marketing. This thread is a fun, relaxing place where can discuss gaming television ads, magazine ads, retailer ads, promotional videos, console launch events, gaming trade shows, conventions, social media, marketing stunts and more.

What were your favorite ads? What were your least favorite? It's an opportunity for the game industry to reflect back on what went right -- and what went wrong -- in the crazy world of video game marketing.

Why is this archive missing so many ads?

It will take me time to post every single television ad from every game, every gaming platform (home consoles + handhelds) and every region (North America, Asia, Europe, Australia). Let me know if there's anything specific that you'd like to see added to the archive. Any help with finding *rare* videos is also appreciated.

How are ads organized?

Ads are organized and listed based on the year that the ad (or game) was released. That way, people can see how a company's advertising strategy changed or evolved over the course of a hardware product's 5-7 year life cycle.

Are you planning to add ads for Atari Jaguar, TurboGrafx-16, 3DO or PC?

Yes. Right now I have my hands full with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and Sega. But I'll get to those systems as soon as I have a chance. Also, I plan to add a section for PC games in the very near future.

Great work putting this all together, Emily. This is an excellent resource and I'm looking forward to revisiting some old ads and discovering some new ones.

So the Magnaox Odyessy was the first television ads for video games? I would not have guessed that.

Also, the Paul Rudd SNES ad might be my favorite one I've watched so far.

Seriously, that's a helluva lot of list for video gaming. Great for resources if you want to know more history about video games, the thread is right here.

What is the criteria to be included here, because I can think of a few ads/promotions (mainly from magazines) that I don't see on the list. Are these only video advertisements?

This is brilliant!

I'd like to believe this could include what is probably my favorite game trailer / promotional video of the last decade: Dead Island's announcement trailer

It even has its own Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Island_announcement_trailer

What is the criteria to be included here, because I can think of a few ads/promotions (mainly from magazines) that I don't see on the list. Are these only video advertisements?

This thread allows discussion related to television ads, magazine ads, retailer ads, promotional videos, console launch events, gaming trade shows, conventions, social media and more.

I think you're covered.

AFAIK this thread is for them too

Yeah, that's what I figured. I just saw all youtube links though, so I wasn't sure.

In that case, I'll add this great piece of promotion. It was a Nintendo Power & Toys R Us cross-promotion for Goldeneye in the form of a dossier. I remember getting this in the mail around the same time as the VHS tape for Diddy Kong Racing (which Emily did include under the Promotional Videos/Rare Footage section).

Unfortunately the best album I found online doesn't show the full pages often since it's zoomed in. Though you can find it on ebay if you're desperate.

Emily - I love the content and concept, and I will be perusing this for material I'm missing, but wouldn't this be better served by a self contained website or even (gasp) wiki?

Discussion is great - I'm just thinking that if the goal is to compile information for future use, an internet forum thread isn't the best method.

Now, a video game advertising/marketing site/wiki/leatherbound encyclopedia....

Holy crap. This just became THE go-to source for video game marketing history. Extremely impressive and I can see myself getting lost in all of that content for hours.

Was fondly looking back at the early snes stuff... I can recall all of them but don't remember those Link to the Past commercials at all. Weird

Hoooly craaap! That was amazing! 15 post opening OT has to be a record. How long did it take to gather all of that? My mind is suitably boggled.

Thanks for this! This is really great stuff. I added it to the Print ad section here.

Can we post about dumb marketing stunts here too or no? Eg. Acclaims guerrilla marketing https://www.wired.com/2007/06/acclaim-lands-o/amp

Sure, feel free to post anything marketing related in this thread. I'll see if I can create a section for marketing stunts in the near future. Acclaim would definitely be the king of video game marketing stunts.

Not sure if this qualifies as spam, but I have 1000+ Japanese game ads with selectable English subs on my youtube, organized chronologically and by system: https://www.youtube.com/user/83Chrisaaron

Wow, this is super helpful. Thanks for linking me to your channel. I will most likely include some of your videos in the archive.

Great stuff. This unforgettable viral promotion is missing.

Thank you, it's now been added to the PSP section of the archive. :-) I wasn't entirely sure what year that viral video released. I'm assuming it was somewhere between 2005-2007.

Similar to the compilation of Crash Bandicoot ads in America, there's one for Japan. Check out especially the strange one at 3:36:

Thank you for the video! It's now been added to the archive in the PS1 section.

Here's the famous UK Zelda OOT ad with the tagline "Will Thou Get The Girl? Or Play Like One?" that aired on the run-up to Christmas.

Haha, I remember this. Thanks for the video! It's now been added to the N64 section.
