The only thing that will change for Americans, just like with 9/11, is they'll find someone new to blame and hate. 9/11 was hatred toward Muslims, this will be hatred toward Asians.

Things will find a new normal. They'll feel normal again, but there will be some major differences between how things were before and after. Like 9/11 but on a larger scale and impacting more areas of our lives.
The global nature of the disaster indicates a change more like a world war.

No, there will be vast changes for Americans. mostly negative.

Gonna be a whole lot of standard Republican voters in their graves due to this virus, since most of their base is old and/or rural (where access to care is limited). I don't wish death upon anyone, but the sheer reality of it is we likely will have the chance to finally lift ourselves from under the thumbs of boomers that fight tooth and nail to keep this country the way it is. Let's use our newfound power to make sure there's a better future for us, our children, the planet, and all of the old folks left that won't be grateful for it.

The people in here claiming this is a hiccup that we won't remember 2 or more weeks from now...I dunno how to tell you this but you have no idea what your life is about to become.

Change that to two months and it's still dead on.

Folks think things are either going to stay exactly the same or be the collapse of society with no in-between and it's frustrating.

Health care is the very first thing I thought of when all this started hitting the US.

It's time to re visit heath care cost ASAP.

I see these opinions going around a lot. However, not to be negative, but humanity has a tendency to 'forget' really quickly. The bad and the good. Especially when it concerns their own (financial) well-being.

Don't think this crisis is going to change a lot. I do hope so though. Humanity could and must do better.
After 9/11 we all chose to give up personal privacy and certain liberties for the sake of national security.

God I would love nothing more than for the world population to learn to put aside their collective hubris in favor of environmental preservation and restoration. Seeing stuff like Venice canals become clear and the smog/unclean air being reduced in China, New York, and California just further accentuates how much WE are the problem and that correcting the damage doesn't and has NEVER required a Herculean effort.

Yeah.. well, let's hope.

Less nonsense and more appreciation of scientific knowledge would be nice. But people seem to rather live a lie.

If humanity can completely ignore the lessons of past horrors like slavery, genocide, and war, we're sure as hell not going to experience sudden enlightenment on account of a pandemic.

People are dim, emotional creatures motivated by self-interest. As soon as our lives return to normal, we'll let ourselves be pacified with bread and circuses again.

Working from home will definitely be a lot more normalized after this, and there is now a very real case study to show to boomer congresspeople how UBI and universal healthcare for americans might have actually saved the economy

C19 is a wake up call for the USA, maybe we'll learn and come out of this better.

maybe it won't seem that way for poland but America was relatively untouched by the world wars

this is going to be a social trauma that will make 9/11 look mild

it is just happening in slow motion so people have not internalized the consequences yet
The U.S was hit badly from WW1. The Spanish Flu has was already hitting the country and the economy only had a slight boom for a couple years after. It also too soon to see if it has greater impacts then 9/11.

Gassing yourself into dissapointment. Some folks out there think coronavirus is the accelerant needed but just cause you say it'll do x, y, & z doesn't mean shit when your forecasting boils down to 'society crumbles and everyone jumps into the Papa socialists arms'.

Should it happen? A lot of those points definitely should. Don't think it will - but believe what you want to believe if it makes the current situation more bearable I guess.

The absence of these things will be used as scapegoats for the sustained economic hit we are taking, and when they come back and the economy bounces back everyone will think that the things this article thinks we can get rid of were responsible for the recovery. Nothing will change.

These articles are hopelessly naive.

America made its choice. We don't want it. And not even this virus is a match for American "values".

Things could lean a little more progressive for the world after this but I agree it is pretty naive to think we are going to get any major changes.

Not unless a lot more people die than even the worst case prediction.

ABC News: 55% of Americans Approve Trumps Handling of Coronavirus Pandemic COVID

In the new poll, 55% of Americans approve of the president's management of the crisis, compared to 43% who disapprove. Trump’s approval on this issue is up from last week, when the numbers were nearly reversed. Only 43% approved of Trump's handling of the pandemic and 54% disapproved in last...

Can't wait to see Trump become a social democrat in his second term

Drain the swamp. This time for real.

Somethings will change for the good and bad. The faulty for profit health insurance system, internet not as a utility, need of schools, personal hygiene, will come out with some reform after this. Largely because the Republicans' main voting base is about to get fucking wrecked. And these are going to be the focus.

But racism, businesses, accountability, etc. Fat chance. Republicans already have the perfect fall guy with Trump and throw on some China bad. They'll be able to deflect a large part of the blame. Also public transportation is done for, for 5 to 10 years. And any non-health care business is going to fall into the "We helped, we're a good guy!"

I think people are gonna get whiplash from how quick everything goes back to 'normal'. And the new normal will likely be worse as big companies that could weather the storm will consolidate power, influence and capital even further.

Even if a million Americans 60+ die and unemployment hits 25%, things are absolutely going back to normal or getting worse. The status quo is too motherfucking profitable for it to change. Believe that.

I think there's a really good chance that you are right. You've even seen it on Era, people showing some despicable racism against Asians in the last few weeks.

Yeeeah, I've seen posters here share the same sentiments... Never underestimate people's ability to quickly stop caring about something once it no longer personally affects them.

Yep. It's such an inherently conservative desire and so clearly not in tune with reality. Our society must radically change or we are all screwed.

Yes. All these people in this thread saying "that'll never happen"...I understand not wanting to get your hopes up, but you're all being irresponsible. This is literally fucking life and death on a massive scale! We know for 100% certain now that the system doesn't work and is already leading to a situation where millions of people in this country alone will likely die as a result. And this is nothing compared to the climate crisis that threatens all living things!

Thinking "everyone's terrible, there's no hope, we're all doomed" is lazy and irresponsible. Even if there's a zero percent chance that the world can be saved, it is our responsibility to ourselves, the people and things we care about, and the future to do everything in our power to try to fix things in any way we can. Immediately surrendering to defeatism and sitting on our asses and doing nothing because there isn't a good chance of it working is almost as evil as working with our enemies! If you realize how truly fucked up things are and wish they were different, then you're one of the good guys, so start acting like it! Immediately shooting down any vision of a better future does nothing positive for us and ultimately discourages others from acting and organizing.

I'm a pessimist too, but it doesn't matter if there's no chance of winning. It's no excuse to not to fight as hard as fucking possible and getting as many people as possible to do the same. Impossible to accomplish these things at the polls? Then fuck the polls, we'll find another way. Impossible to get billionaires to choose to stop hoarding societies resources? Then we'll make so they won't have a choice.

Nothing is going to magically change, but this pandemic is a massive blow to the status quo that has been leading to our enslavement and eventually extinction as a species. Let's take this as an opportunity to cultivate power to ourselves and confuse and destroy the power of our enemies. Because we don't have the luxury of throwing our hands into the air and giving up. Literally everything is on the line, people, so start fucking acting like it!

That kind of financial support is not sustainable long term. It's great the current dickheads in charge are providing it in the short term though.

I saw a tweet that called attention to the FDA or some such coming down hard on religious grifters for promoting Coronavirus "cures" like colloidal silver with cease and desist orders, and that used to be something government considered too difficult to regulate as a 1st Amendment issue. I am sure we will see far more environmental and health regulations in a Biden administration. I imagine most of the both-sides doomsayers here are Bernie voters; is your man going back to the senate and do nothing? Do you think Elizabeth Warren or AOC et al aren't going to fight for progress? Biden is going to sign whatever a Democratic-led House and Senate pass. Vote for Biden if you want any change!

We're totally just gonna go back to normal and pretend nothing happened. That's what humanity does. That's why we keep doing the same mistakes again and again, falling victim to the same kinds of market bubbles, wars, espionage scandals, viruses and whatnot. Everybody just lives normally until they can't, then keep doing what they always did when they're allowed to again.

If we are talking about the U.S.A then I dont see it happening. Did anything change when someone shot up kids in Sandy Hook? I swear I remember there will a lot of people saying how Obama crying about Sandy Hook is just the deep-state trying to take away guns. If kids being shot doesn't change anything, dont think anything will. This pandemic will probably amp up people whole attitude of "fuck you, got mine" Trumps approval ratings are at 55% now, and almost half the people they polled said they think the pandemic is overblown.

The core is rotten. Not to be a tinfoil hat dude, but a big massive revolution needs to happen for things to change.

Other countries not sure. Im In canada and theres still people out acting normal. There was hundreds of people lined up yesterday for animal crossing saying they dont give a shit about the pandemic. Were just a selfish species.

You know one thing that'll get a lot of this to happen, is if young people voted in overwhelming numbers this fall. Aside from the vocal side of the Bernie bros it's pretty obvious people just don't fucking vote. Politicians will change their tune if they see 70% of the 18-29 somethings voting since they're the one wanting this stuff. If it doesn't happen w/ all these kids out of jobs now that everything in the service industry has imploded it never will.

Good luck waiting on young people...

The only thing we'll get from this is escalated racism against Chinese individuals and the further erosion of privacy once places require you to show proof that you recovered from or were (eventually) vaccinated against COVID.

Trump refers to it as the "Chinese Virus" for a reason, once this passes he'll double down on that xenophobic framing of the outbreak and use it to energize his base to vote against long term fixes for these problems.

We will discover and adapt to our new normal, but it will probably just include shifting people's views a bit more left on industries such as healthcare and employment and making people take public health more seriously.

But I'll be happy to be proven wrong and see the world swing hard left.

Outside of people's day to day, I think we will see more grassroots movements to elect politicians who want to make sure that our future normal is one where everyone is protected from the failings of capitalism. We should look to support those individuals and movements.

If this shit overshadows us for the next year to year and a half as is being expected, i can see some change but even then im not optimistic it would as transformative as we deserve. If we can get things to normalize to a decent degree within the next 3-4 months, this'll all just be a blip on the radar to use reaffirming the status quo

I don't know why we're putting this on "young people." The upper end of millennials, the ire of those against things changing the most, are approaching 40. I'm hoping to see people at least try to push more for change to where we should be as people.

Definitely going back to normal lol.
Nah, we aren't going back to normal. There will be talk of "tightening belts" and "paying back" all this "good will" corporations and billionaires are "graciously" giving us. Can't wait to get brow-beaten by corporations and the GOP when things improve as they attempt to slash any safety net left to "balance" all this spending.

Given era's general predictive nature, if most in this thread think things will go back to normal, things are not going back to normal. Lol.

Anecdotal, but I'm noticing positive changes in attitudes towards socialist ideas from people who normally are very right leaning, etc.

Personally in regards to the scales and impact of change, I think the truth is going to be somewhere in the middle. On the whole, if this goes on for months, things are going to change because things will have changed, simple as that.

For better or worse the media and digital connectivity of our time is going to feed a large portion of the "thought loop" that drives the human psyche on various levels, manifestations and expressions.

It's not a matter of everyone changing, just enough people pushing or being pushed to move certain needles.

People want normal but the definition of normal may be very different as time passes. Also most people want a sense of safety above all as they begin to feel a genuine threat to self perseveration.

People are asking questions. More importantly people who never felt a need to ask questions are either asking questions themselves or are more receptive to having certain questions asked. Many were able to stay in their bubble which is simply not the case anymore for a whole lot of people.

If things continue to progress further, more people are going to begin to taking notice how things suddenly become possible because they had to become possible, there's a lot of potential in that msg. But will have to see how things go over the next few months.

Personally I think if you're one of those people who want to see a dramatic shift in a positive way then push that agenda and propaganda. It's our choice. It can go either way. This is literally the biggest potential tipping point in modern history for radical change to happen rapidly on a large scale.

Thankfully the perceived enemy in this us versus them battle has the potential to unify us as a species. Or at least bring us a few steps closer to that. this situation is our best shot at that possibility or at least making progress on that front.

Everything that occurs between now and then can be referenced as fuel or fire to promote or dissuade.

The biggest lesson that I tend to highlight is how things deemed too difficult or impossible change into problems that can be solved or at least worked on when we choose to do so (the motivator has always been the key).

Again if things continue their current trajectory, there are going to be major points we can highlight across our entire spectrum of humanity that we will be able to learn from and reference. A history that technology will make hard to ignore combined with experiences that I doubt any of us are going to forget (Ideally if it goes on long enough to remap the psyche).

Interesting times to say the least.
