Facebook Says it Will Stop Operating in Europe If Regulators Don't Back Down
European regulators are cracking down on Facebook's ability to transfer data across the Atlantic. Now the tech giant is threatening to pull its services from more than 400 million European users.

Facebook threatening to pack up their toys and go home. Such a ridiculous bluff.

This would be great. Net positive. Don't back down, EU!

Seriously comedic.

Lol they won't pull out, and even if they did it would be a temporary thing to hope the Eu folds.

Like hell they will, the profits they make and the fact a new platform would emerge for such a large market.

No way the greedy fuckers in charge leave all that money on the table. But it would be nice.

I know a lot of people here would cheer if FB shuts down but as someone who relies on FB and IG to make a living... ugh.

At least I wish Instagram was never sold to Facebook.

Is this about the Privacy Shield issue? Because if this is I think the EU bears a lot of responsibility on this as well.

They basically had a "solution" of private data transfer to the US called "Safe Harbor" which was deemed unfit by the european court of justice (basically a bunch of contractual commitments when it is clear that they cannot be met by the companies because US authorities may have access anyways).

The comission than just introduced the same thing again and called it "Privacy Shield" after a few years the european court of justice just called it out what it is. an unfit solution.

Its actually not only facebook but all of the companies operating in europe and US that have the exact same issue.

The EU should have agreed with the US on a deal on this issue and should have introduced a solution on that basis. Just labelling the same solution with a different name is not a solution at all

I don't know, it seems like "lolwhocares" type of situation..but Whatsapp seems like a pretty big deal in EU countries.

that would be one of the best things happening in 2020, but it will never happen. Kinda click baity

"Facebook is not threatening to withdraw from Europe," a Facebook spokesperson said, adding that the court filing simply lays out how "Facebook, and many other businesses, organisations and services, rely on data transfers between the EU and the US in order to operate their services."
