Wouldn't this also encompass a lot of older manga and anime in general? A lot of stuff from the 70s and 80s had random nudity, often involving teens. I mean, look at Ranma 1/2. The main cast are all in high school, and the first storyline has multiple scenes involving female Ranma and Akane nude. So did the anime. Wouldn't that fall under this law? Certainly is going to be a lot of Go Nagai and Tezuka stuff getting banned.

Banning all of anything is usually a retro, backwards take on any issue.

That said the hentai pipeline sure seems filled with a lot of depictions of high schoolers and children. In anime that's generally okay. But it seems like a lot of hentai features characters in proportionally the same age ranges as most anime: 16 and younger. Or, childlike in appearance (1,000 year old dragons). Barely legal at the oldest.

That industry should consider a proper scrubbing and better self-policing so that nations don't feel like they need to do it for them.

Australia has just enraged the eternal fury of the worlds most impotent fandom.

Time to ban takoyaki because of tentacle porn.

Australia has the most reactionary laws in western countries. The game censorships are also mind boggling.

Guess it's what happens when you have right wing governments with conservatism giving them brain disease.

It's just not fair, how am I supposed to get off if I can't read the doujinshi about a short haired sporty high-school track-star who has a sexual awakening and starts domming her pretty-boy classmate before coming to the realization that she's actually bisexual so she 'ropes' in her best friend, the shy bookish nerdy girl who's been lusting after her best friend for years but has been too afraid to act on her feelings for fear of being rejected.

How Australia...HOW?!

God damn I didn't realize how many people here like cartoon porn, big yikes for me.

They should have banned this stuff a long ass time ago.

Not that I don't think this isn't a colossally dumb decision, but that's a slippery slope fallacy.
Maybe so, but they're banning all hentai because of a certain subset of it. They're already sliding down the slippery slope, it's not just hypothetical.

Or, another way of putting it: They're using a slippery slope fallacy to justify the ban.

What a boomer mentality. The Era boomers are coming out again just like the TikTok ban.

"Ban everything of this genre instead of the problematic part because I don't like it!!!"

This is the perfect opportunity for someone from AussiERA to open a domestic sex toy factory.

Soon

In the dystopian future of 2030, the Australian government is cracking down on any perceived immoral activity from using risqué language to distributing lewd materials in the country, to the point where all citizens are forced to wear high-tech devices called Peace Makers (PM) at all times that analyze every spoken word and hand motions for any action that could break the law.

I am gonna be honest all of these hot takes saying "Good" and "nothing of value was lost" come off as more then just boomer takes but being massively uninformed as well (since it bans a whole lot more then just hentai) and it also comes off as a wee bit on the diet racist side with trying attack and sweep all of Japanese hentai into being lolicon stuff.

Drawn porn is always going to exist, and functionally isn't any different from live action porn. It always comes down to an issue of interpretation beyond obvious tells of underage characters, and it's never going to be easy to enforce or moderate the content that comes up. The clause in this ban enabling the Australian government to interpret inappropriate smut freely at their discretion makes me think they buried the lede and hentai is just the convenient target that their supporters will flock to.

Wait regular Japanese porn and sex toys are not allowed either? I'm not sure if I read that article right. Are locally made sex toys still legal, and only Japanese items are banned? Are Japanese women/men allowed to create porn in Australia or are they banned too?

And its necessary. The porn industry doesn't make child pronography. The hentai industry fucking lives off it.
You say that as if a mass amount of porn isn't centered around a wide range of morally unethical or illegal shit, that only gets by because it's "simulated" or because the actors are just barely 18.

I don't think any kind of regulation is going to be really effective unless it happens in Japan itself. I don't know if/when that's going to happen because last I heard there were entire political parties in Japan devoted to keeping it all legal. However they do it they need to draw some kind of line.

Yeah, I gotta say I'm a little surprised at some of the takes here. In my opinion, real life "this teen is barely legal" stuff seems WAY more harmful and damaging than drawn hentai consisting of only adults.

It's interesting that a place where every living creature is designed to kill you is so terrified of basically every else.

I don't know about furry stuff, but BDSM art/porn has always been a whipping boy for moral campaigners. Sex, violence, degradation? Why would a "reasonable adult" enjoy something like that? Society must be protected from that sick filth!
Wow....people really find it hard to understand people can like that sort

It's Puritan bullshit banning all sorts of porn and sex toys and blaming underage shit for it
