You don't need the blockchain to plant a fucking tree.

It's like the goons in the infomercial who need this special mail order product because they don't know how to do household chores without falling over for no reason and spilling everything.

When will Amazon be held accountable for the health and logevity of the Amazon rainforest?

Good grief blockchain is such a scam. Every time it's mentioned I either think 1) you don't need blockchain to do that 2) blockchain doesn't actually solve that problem.

No idea why it says blockchain in the title when it's really about how fucking awful this "reforestation" company is at doing their job.

Yeah, I think this title is a bit misleading / suggestive, it's not like they're mining coins on one end and planting trees on the other end, blockchain isn't necessarily crypto.

That said, it's still ironic / terrible that a tree planting company probably destroyed more trees than they grew lol

It's a horrible accident but not related to blockchain really.

Apparently the blockchain is not used to plant the trees but simply to verify the progress which is very lightweight usage but ensures immutability.

VeChain is doing something like this already as a joint project with DNV but it's about collecting plastic from water.

Should be noted that the VeChain blockchain itself is eco friendly, it's not using more electricity than any regular cloud server infrastructure. It's not mined in any way and no unnecessary complex calculations are done to run the blockchain.

In case anyone's wondering how this company triggered the fire:

The fire started in Bubierca, a province of Zaragoza, the capital of autonomous community Aragon, when a Land Life contractor planting trees accidentally set off sparks that ignited nearby plant life.

"The fire started while one of our contractors was using a retro-spider excavator to prepare the soil to plant trees later this winter," Land Life said in a statement on Thursday. "The operators alerted the emergency services. The emergency teams are working non-stop to control the fire and have fortunately established the fire perimeter. Nonetheless, we are devastated by the latest estimate that the damage will be around 14,000 hectares," or roughly 35,000 acres."

A bit more mundane explanation than Vice's headline suggests. With the heat and dryness in Europe right now, any stray spark can cause this.

What problem is this solving though? It doesn't prove that anything in the physical world has actually happened, just that someone decided to record something in their blockchain.

Why do you need to verify anything? Just plant a fucking tree or pick up a plastic bottle, it's not rocket science and definitely not computer science.

It's not solving any problem. You can automate recording the progress of events without blockchain.

Well yeah, not all blockchain solutions market themselves like they're doing "web3" or trying to change everything.
These are the simplest ways blockchain can be used (to store data in immutable way for verification purposes) without causing unnecessary energy usage.

DNV is the world's largest certification company and they've transferred their digital certificates to public blockchain. It's just one technology among others and not trying to replace everything.

Of course anyone can argue if there's any point in immutability, but I think the more important thing is that it doesn't cause any harm (like Bitcoin / Ethereum) when company decides to use it for their own purposes.

So we have an immutable record of all the trees they planted, but not all the ones they burned down.

Yeah, don't get too caught up in the blockchain thing. It sounds like they were one of many companies trying to jump on a technological buzzword. Not really relevant to what they do or this story from what I can tell.

That's one way to keep yourself in the replanting business.

2 in one month?! They might need to better prepare for these accidental sparks with some extinguishers at the ready or coordinate with the fire department when they bring these big machines in.
