Ghost of Tsushima devs to be made permanent ambassadors of the real island | VGC

Creative leads to be honoured for spreading “the name and history” of Tsushima…

Game director Nate Fox and Creative director Jason Connell will become permanent tourism ambassadors of the city of Tsushima in Nagasaki, the island announced this week.

To mark the occasion, the city said it will collaborate with Sony Interactive Entertainment to set up a new tourism campaign based on the game, which is designed to encourage fans to learn more about the island and its key landmarks.

In a statement, Tsushima mayor Hiroki Hitakatsu explained why the pair have been awarded with the honour.

"[Fox and Connell] spread the name and history of Tsushima to the whole world in such a wonderful way," he said.

"Even a lot of Japanese people do not know the history of the Gen-ko period. When it comes to the world, the name and location of Tsushima is literally unknown, so I cannot thank them enough for telling our story with such phenomenal graphics and profound stories."

What a great honour. Congrats to Nate Fox and Jason Connell. We're definitely gonna be seeing Ghost of Tsushima 2.

That has to be a huge honor. I remember some people in here being upset at a western developer making a game set in historical Japan, but after finally playing it (and hearing the opinion of several japanese developers) it's absolutely clear that the amount of care and love put into it is astounding. Props to the whole studio, GoT is a magical experience.

I feel like only giving the title to the two leads is a little bit of a disservice to the others, given how the game would not have been possible without the work of a lot of other people, but it's still a really cool thing.

Haven't played it, but it's awesome how the game has made the island a better known place.

"I would really like to appoint all the Sucker Punch, SIE, and game users who were involved in the work as Tourism Ambassadors," he said.

I really need to play this game. Really sweet gesture and I bet this means more to Sucker Punch than some of the major accolades they've already recieved.

While I had some issues with the game, the setting was definitely not one of them, it looked gorgeous and I can see why the game would draw people to look up more about the island. I spend a bit on Wikipedia looking up the history myself :)

A wonderful game, should be experienced by all.

Congrats.

Hopefully Sony's expansion into PC ports will help with this and get more people to play it!

Nice to see that their effort has gained recognition and respect. The crowdfunding campaign for Tsushima was also really nice.
I still remember the E3 talk regarding their visit to the island and how they almost leaked that they were making a game about Tsushima;

That's really cool.

I do wonder if it could impose creative constraints on a sequel though. For instance an ambassador of the island might refrain from portraying anything regarding the island and it's inhabitants, negatively.

Oh shit that's awesome. Congrats to them! I think GoT really moved a lot of Japanese people who understand the history.

I'm playing the game right now and it's amazing how it captures the essence of feudal japan, while also being respectful to the culture. This is pretty cool, they should feel honored.

Cool. GoT is by far the best Sony game of 2020 and just an all round fantastic video game with a compelling and emotional story, fantastic gameplay and music. Not to mention the gorgeous world.

It's great to see the game honoured like this.

It wasn't nowhere near as clear cut as that but sure. That's one version of the events.

On topic, this is a nice gesture and a great honor.
Sorry if it seemed that I'm trying to cover something or make excuses for any of my country's mistakes.
Bureaucracy in Greece is a huge problem so those devs remained in custody way longer than it should have
but for better or for worse taking pictures of military bases in not allowed and with good reason.
But as you mention we a getting off-topic, we can discuss the matter through PM if you want.

That's fantastic and also deserved. Honestly, everyone involved with the game's development deserves some degree of official recognition.

That's fantastic news, such a great compliment and honour to the developers and the whole studio. It speaks for the authenticity of Ghost of Tsushima and how well the game was received in Japan by developers and the public.
