Still not comparable. The MCU has already had other directors step away. You even have a contending Black Widow director dropping out because of control.
It isn't comparable. I don't get why folks have a problem accepting Marvel curates the MCU in a certain way that heavily limits their creative folk.

Again, did you read what shit Ayer went through for Suicide Squad? You're ignoring the greater context to fit your narrative as though Marvel is unique. They're not.
Look at Flash, several directors have walked away from that. It's less stable with directors then Ant-man was.

Do directors really expect to work for Marvel and do whatever the heck they want? They should know it would come contingencies.
why would they want someone well known as an auteur filmmaker who probably demands a way higher paycheck when they just fired a relative nobody for not playing ball?
It's odd how directors can still be surprised by the demands of working for Marvel. They're jumping into a well oiled machine that gets proven results. It's unreasonable to expect special treatment.
Derrickson probably also wanted more time to develop this movie.

Marvel isn't unique. That's not a reason to rally behind Marvel or a reason to rally for DC. It's a reason to rally behind the creatives that did, or didn't make it through to the end intact.
Any movie that makes it through those machines with any sense of identity is a minor miracle.
Shazam had various directors, too, before finally getting made. Sony originally bought in James Cameron to direct Spider-man before it finally got to Riami.
The DCEU went bottoms up. No one really knows how it will shake out. It isn't comparable.

If they'll want me at that point" makes it sound like it was likely Marvel that offered him a franchise after he won the Director's award in 2015. I'm glad he turned it down since we got The Lighthouse instead, but I wonder what it was that they had in mind for him.
We're not talking about the future of the DCEU, this is about how WB handles its directors. Why aren't you complaining about what happened to Ayer? These days Snyder won't shut up about being fucked with by WB.

Not only that, Del Toro's box office return probably wouldn't line up with the price tag he'd demand. He's directed many action (and comic) films in his career, and the highest grossing one domestically was $101 mil. He's a film lover's filmmaker, but the reality is people don't always "get" him, and his name doesn't add much cache to the wide audience Marvel wants. So why pay his fee?
It's Disney. We've seen this a dozen ties already. It's the Hollywood studio system all over again. Reliable revenue over risks and creativity every time. More business than art.

It's not Disney, it's Hollywood. Other studios do this, too. Film is both art and a business, not one or the other.

Marvel in its current form will never let him make a Del Toro movie.
I would personally disagree on aesthetics, but it's a good Marvel film with strong cinematography for the most part, so I won't split hairs. He directed it and it was a success, and I'm happy for him.
