An animated "Game of Thrones" series is in the very early development stages at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed with sources.

There are no details available about what the focus of the potential series would be and no writers or talent are currently attached to the project.

HBO Max declined to comment.

‘Game of Thrones’ Animated Series in Early Development at HBO Max

An animated "Game of Thrones" series is in the very early development stages at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed with sources.

From THR -

Meetings with writers for the adult-leaning project, which would be similar in tone to HBO's Emmy-winning flagship, are already under way. No deals have been made and there's still a possibility that the animated series never comes to fruition.

Reps for HBO Max declined comment.

The animated idea is part of a larger strategy to expand the world of creator George R.R. Martin's fantasy drama. Sources say development executives at HBO — led by drama head Francesca Orsi and her group — are working directly with Martin on building out the sprawling Game of Thrones world. (Martin remains under a rich overall deal with the cabler.)

Meetings with writers are underway for a potential 'Game of Thrones'-based series that would be part of the franchise's expansion at parent company WarnerMedia, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Getting into GoT overload when people are already sick of the franchise after the last season.

That being said, very into the idea of an adult fantasy animated show, you could do tons of huge, wild things that are too expensive for live action.

Watch this be a full animated remake with 8+ seasons, and Winds of Winter still won't be out when this gets to the series finale.

Okay, I'm way more onboard with this.

An animated series is the only way that ASOIAF can truly be done justice.

The way the THR article is reported, it sounds like once HBO Max launched they realized they wanted to go all in on Max Original series rather than HBO proper.

Sources note that expansion plans for Game of Thrones were in the works long before Disney announced plans for nearly a dozen Star Wars and another dozen or so Marvel TV series for its streamer, Disney+, during its investor day in December. While HBO previously developed a number of other Game of Thrones prequels that did not move forward, the emergence of HBO Max has placed a greater importance on building out Martin's sprawling universe. (All of HBO's original series wind up on the streamer the day after they air on the premium cable network.)

Another project that is Game of Thrones related?

Well, I hope they take the opportunity to be faithful to the books with this potential "remake". If they adapt the books A Feast of Crows and A Dance with Dragons (with all those storylines and political-magical elements removed in Game of Thrones)... that would be fantastic!

Take that chance! After all, I don't see the point in watching an exact clone of Game of Thrones.

The first few seasons of the live action were pretty faithful, but the moment a certain character revives will be gigantic for sparking interest in lost viewers

assuming this is Game of Thrones: brotherhood

Tbh, an animated series should probably start with Robert's Rebellion and end with whatever GRRM's actual ending is for the ASOIAF series. That starting point would immediately differentiate it from GoT. It would remove the R+L mystery, but it's not a mystery anymore anyway.

That would be great if they do

More of Ned Stark - the better 😂

Do a Clone Wars and make something that happens around the corners of the show that makes those last two seasons better.

Hopefully it's something that necessitates an animated format - like something so fantastical that doing it in live action would be cost prohibitive.

I wasn't really enamored with the look and art direction of the series; the armor, clothing and castles were so drab and bland compared to the pageantry of the books. The house sigils were turned into the flat icons with muted colors no one could make out on the battlefield. You couldn't even distinguish Dany's dragons by color and markings.

An animated series could do that aspect more justice but I expect they'll cling to the visual identity of the series. It's like that 90s superhero movie revival, when studios were desperately trying to avoid showing colorful spandex.

This could be cool. I thought an anthology like series that jumps around to different cultures and time periods could work well for the setting. Animation could be a good way to achieve that.

I want to see...
- Arianne's failed plot to declare Myrcella queen.
- Barristan trying to survive as hand of the queen's in the political hornet's nest called Meereen (with the accompanying intrigue by Skahaz).
- Jon's plot with Melissandre to steal Jeyne from Ramsay and how he marries off Alys Karstark to Sigorn.... All to support Stannis.... A violation of political neutrality which meant his death.
- Tyrion as a manipulative hateful personality who plays game of thrones for his own selfish interests - at the expense of persons close to him (including his girlfriend Penny)
- Brienne reconnecting with Lady Stoneheart who seeks revenge against the Freys.
- The plan to marry off Sansa to Harry Hardyng, in the Eyrie, which is part of Petyr's master plan.
- Quentyn struggling with warfare during the Sack of Astapor.
- Cersei as a narcissistic, paranoid personality who will be responsible for the fall of the Lannister regime.
- Jaime who completely breaks with Cersei and considers taking Tommen away from Cersei (even though that would mean the loss of the Iron Throne).
- Victarion and Euron forming an alliance with Daenerys and trying to gain control of a dragon using a magical horn.
- Aegon VI Targaryen who lands on Westeros with the help of the Golden Company, gains control of important castles such as Storm's End (and will most likely be on the Iron Throne before Daenerys is in Westeros).
- Stannis who, after conquering Deepwood Motte, along with a series of loyal northerners is determined to recapture Winterfell (Stannis will most likely conquer Winterfell in The Winds of Winter).
- Davos getting acquainted with Wyman Manderly, with his political scheming to undermine the Bolton occupation.
- Rickon in Skagos, potentially Lord of Winterfell in The Winds of Winter
- Warg abilities of the Starks, which were not in the show.
- A decent understanding of the central theme from the books "The human heart in conflict with itself."
-...

A selection of the many plot points that never made it into the TV series. Please, adapt these and be true to the books.

Uh, I'm into this. Hell, I'd even welcome a fully animated remake of the main series where they might be able to smooth out the last couple of seasons and expand on them. But if its doing something new also great, I just want more adult animation. They can do some wild stuff unreachable with live action.

Yeah if they commit to being faithful to the book material then it will seem like a different show, even beyond going from live action to animation. There are so many plots, locations, and characters left on the cutting room floor.

Animated remake. Just what I asked.

They can't do live remake, it would be the biggest fuck you ever to the cast. But they can take their time with a great animated series.
