☝🏻I mean, I think it's understandable - 100% of people who've played and love the half life games did not play them VR and probably only a small minority of said people have access to a VR headset. Given we've waited 12 years for anything half life related, at least I certainly didn't hope for it to be on a platform I didn't own and have no intention of owning. Valve in many ways helped to define PC gaming and now their key series is not playable on a standard PC.
That said, these threads shouldn't fill with people like me whining about it. The game looks incredible, I just can't at this point see myself investing in VR on the basis of it, much as I adore the series.
This at least tells me that they have writers again which was one of many reasons why Half Life 3 never moved forward supposedly.
Yep. I bought every previous HL game at or not long after launch. This one I will likely have to wait longer on.I think it has a lot more to do with it having the highest price barrier ever for the series.
Same, it's going to going suck but if this it what needs to happen for a half lfie to come back and make as big an impact as the others I'm fine with it.Yep. I bought every previous HL game at or not long after launch. This one I will likely have to wait longer on.
This isn't true either - outside of Laidlaw, who retired, and Chet Falisek- who also had insight on the game but left to start his own indie studio, Pinkerton and Wolpaw remain, in addition to new ones, Campo Santo's folks like Chris Remo, and consulting writers such as Rob Yescombe.
It's more surprising how low turnover is at Valve, with staff still there over 2 decades later
Wolpaw went back to Valve early this year I believe
Looks like Wolpaw left a few years ago?
I guess if we're looking to be technically accurate, it looked like Half Life was dead because all of the original writers left the company.
Unless that article and the thread I vaguely remember from however many years back were just completely off base.

It being around the same length as HL2 is great news. I'm super excited for this.
I understand that, but in that case, I would rather call it "another part of the story", not "the next part", you see what I mean?
"While it does take place before the events of Half-Life 2, we actually recommend that you play through Half-Life 2: Episode 2 before you play Half-Life: Alyx, for reasons that will become clear as you progress."I understand that, but in that case, I would rather call it "another part of the story", not "the next part", you see what I mean?

The next part of the Half-Life story happen before Half-Life 2 ?
*Cough* Metal GearExactly, but also it is not unheard of to have a narrative arch occuring before events of a story, that are required for understanding the rest of the narrative that unfolds. For all we know, both could occur in this game or be key to informing a subsequent release.
VR seems to be integral with it's design, why are people upset? VR finally has a real AAA killer app
Half-Life 1.9
Tell me how you really feel roflPiss off, valve...
I'm not gonna buy an expensive VR headset just for you to disappoint me, guess I'll read about instead or something, once it's out... (if it comes out, lol)
What can I say, when they string people along for decades, with nothing to show for it except this marketing horse rap about a prequel.

I lived to see the next installment in the Half-Life franchise.
The graphics look so great for a VR game thanks to Source Engine 2. I can't wait for a full game non VR game using this engine. It gonna look epic. But by limiting this to their Index VR they gonna limit its sales and the potential people interested in it especially that index is really very pricy.
A wide ranging Interview with the Verge on Half-Life: Alyx, confirms that this is in fact the next part of the Half-Life Story, rather than a "spin off"
"Half-Life: Alyx is set in the aftermath of the Combine invasion of Earth, before the return of Gordon Freeman in Half-Life 2. While it does take place before the events of Half-Life 2, we actually recommend that you play through Half-Life 2: Episode 2 before you play Half-Life: Alyx, for reasons that will become clear as you progress. It's not a side story, nor an episodic one — it's the next part of the Half-Life story, in a game around the same length as Half-Life 2. "
