If i have 500+ hours in No Man's Sky, but not many other survival games interest me would I get into this?

I have maybe 100 hours in Minecraft over the years.

Man, this game got me hooked! It's been quite a while since I had a game that got it's hooks in me like this. Even got a dedicated server so me and a friend can continue on our world whenever instead of us having to be online. Really loving this game so far.

Finally got me a longboat. Time to sail towards the swamp boss, I think. Got the feeling this one'll be rough, wonder if I should actually ditch my troll armor for iron armor...

That's my plan. I never bothered with Bronze armor but I am going for Iron armor. Also those sausages are incredible. I made a bronze buckler and Iron Mace.

My friends and I decided to have another friend join our server with the objective of hunting and killing us. Were going to turn on ff for us and opt in to be seen on the map while he's hidden.

We'll see how it goes. I feel like the game suits this kind of thing pretty well on a dedicated server.

So this game is running like absolute dogshit on my laptop. Like a 2-year-old Lenovo X1 with a 6-core i7 and a 1050ti so I feel like I should be able to run this? I tried the -windowed-mode-only trick and it didn't work. Hell, setting everything to low doesn't work. Running at 1080p.

Anyone have any ideas?

I found the game was very unstable at high to max settings even on my desktop pc (Ryzen 3700x & Radeon VII). I set everything to medium except for draw distance which I have set to very high. I get around 60 fps now. I run it at 1080p as well.

So yeah, after several attempts, I still lag super bad and have super bad desync while connecting to a friend's world.

Well that didn't go well lol. Tried to land on a small island to make camp and then all of a sudden MOSQUITO.
Managed to recover my body but I need a new longboat now heh

Was looking for the swamp (found a small stretch of, coastal next to massive mountain), encountered a not-on-the-map island with Abyssal Barnacles on it; had no tools so couldn't interact interestingly. Marked on the map for future!

Yeah, I tried a bunch of stuff and I'm still only getting like 20fps with everything turned off and on low. Think I'll have to get a refund until they can optimize stuff down the line.

Beat the first boss in my first session, really into the loop of the game now!
We built a big house but decided to break it down at the end of the night and migrate all our stuff into a small little cabin and then we'll build a proper town/living space tomorrow now we have more available items.

finished the last boss yesterday with a friend. Pretty stellar showing for an Early Access game, and I'm excited to start all over again once the progression is finished. Only things that I wasn't huge fans of were:

  1. The Food and Stamina system. Not a fan of the decay and wait method of your max health pool. Same with Stamina. Having to wait to eat to maintain max health wasn't fun, and I didn't find myself wanting (or needing) to take the time to strategically manage it either.
  2. Rain. Maybe bad RNG, but it felt like it rained all day, every day in our 150 some days played. And given I already didn't care for the stamina system, this made me frustrated throughout. If its a part of the lore and story they are going for, then they should adjust its impact on stamina and maybe add another hindrance (chance to miss, something with blocking dodging, etc.).
  3. Tying any item to the merchant, especially an item to trigger the ability to make certain weapons. Unless he is much more easily accessible in release (we never found him), that wasn't fun as part of the progression system.
  4. Boss AI needs some work. We felt like we cheesed pretty much every boss because of its interaction with the terrain.

The games default Vsync seems to be terrible so disable that and enable vsync in the Nvidia control panel, that might help a bit.

Also with -windowed-mode-only, after loading into the game try hitting Alt+Enter to switch to window mode, then do it again to bring you back into fullscreen. I found that sometimes my performance was really bad even though it was fine earlier in the day, and doing this fixes it for the most part for me.

Even if that does work, there seems to be some engine issues, sometimes my FPS are great then other times in the same exact spot it's worse for whatever reason. I think performance might degrade over time as well.

Just finished a 7 hours session with my friends. I can't believe how time just passes by playing this game.

We had to sail for like 15 minutes to reach the second boss. We set portals, so it's now super easy to get to that area.

I swear I saw a giant water snake stalking us when we were sailing. I'm the only one who saw it so maybe I mistook it for a water effect or something like that?

Alright biiiig 'diary' post;

No pictures this time as I'm doing this on mobile but I'll get them next time.

So yesterday a lot happened! First, tried polearm class of weapons - excellent, and there're good reasons why. My group has a distinct setup for roles going on:

Me, the only one who's touched the 2-handed weapon class as a whole. I've used all available to me, from big Deer Hammer of Burial Chamber Destruction, allll the way to Bows. That's right, I'm our only Bow/Hammer/Polearm user. I'm also our Woodcutter, coincidentally.

Our jack-of-all-trades Spears n' Shield user; mixed ranged and parties for versatility. Handles minor groups of enemies while whittling away at their health.

Our specialist Unarmed and Bigshield Stealth-Tank. You read correctly. They have 0 in any weapon except Unarmed and Axe, Axe from early game tree chopping. Level 44 unarmed at the moment, a bunch of recent unfortunate deaths setting him back. Otherwise focuses exclusively on providing tanking assistance with the large, slow, shields; helps with the stamina you see. Sneak attacks to bolster the unarmed damage, of course. Surprisingly helpful btw, especially in parries/poise breaks - rapid fist jabs help a lot sometimes!

Brief summary of events:
- Heard merchant randomly ?in/near? Black Forest, ran up the entire coast of island looking for; failed, created portal at first Meadow back named. Easy north-side access now!
- Crossed to Elder via boat. Specialist is also leveling jump at all possible times, including boat; drowned of course, bad brakes on the boats.. understandably...
- Scouted, merchant found right next to elder, cool! Fought elder; as many know a specific tactic is by far most effective. Re-Examine the aforementioned roles we're all taking. Yep. Needed a mid-fight resupply due to... yeah...
- Victorious, returned, dumped stuff went to merchant bought goods including the fun stuff. Challenging it is, but oddly relaxing.
- Solo sailed boat to scout and find swamp; reached edge of map.

long day!

I have maybe 100 hours in Minecraft over the years.

No other survival game has clicked with me except No Man's Sky, but I have enjoyed this so far. I would say it's wayyyy more co-op focused than No Man's Sky, but the fact that it is fully co-op focused was a big plus for me over other similar Survival games that have a big emphasis on PVP.

This game feels more like a mix of an open world RPG with a survival game as there is a clear main story quest and zone progression.

Friend and I successfully built a long boat (complete with a gate secured dock) and sailed to take out the Elder.

We handled that well enough, then went to build a portal to help us get back home. But, the portal didn't work and we both got merc'd by a 2 star draugr bow sniper before we could build our new base and beds :( luckily we had just enough spare nails at our base to build a second boat. I realized the portal I had built at home was destroyed in a recent raid. I placed it outside my walls (it look cool) and it was missing when I respawned back at base.

I rebuilt it, this time in the walls of our base.

Before we set off again, two friends new to the game joined, so we (unwisely, in hindsight) gave them the barest of introductions to the mechanics before sailing off again, this time approaching from a different direction, avoiding the nearby swamp (although that was our ultimate destination, we hoped).

We landed and found an abandoned church and quickly tried to build it into a shelter before nightfall (we recently realized how helpful it can be to repair the structures you find OR quickly break them down for materials). We were almost done and had built the beds when we were swarmed and our strongest player died before he could claim a bed. We didn't have enough nails or bronze for another boat, so the two newbies and I (we were running really thin on supplies, too) waited until morning and ran back to where I was killed by the draugr. We got chased around a little and that same draugr would occasionally start walking towards us, but I eventually got the mats and built the portal, then we all met up again and built a new fort near the swamp.

We also had our first wraith encounter! Early in the night my friend said he saw a hooded person disappear and I had no idea what he was talking about. Later, one appeared at our new base and basically IMMEDIATELY killed the two new guys. We got it killed and got part of a forge bellows.

Came across a terrible bug with the raft and surprised its only me that experienced it after looking around online.
on a online dedicated server our raft in water would de-sync around slowly causing damage, we didn't know this till too later and our raft broke mid trip to further lands and then we died.
it was disappointing but that was the only fault/bug i have come across, apart from that this game is pretty clean for early access

Rafts are supposed to take damage... you can't use them to travel far.

Rafts take damage quite a bit as you head out on the ocean.
Karves also do randomly but not a lot.
Not sure about longboats.

But the idea is that your ships have wear & tear and you sometimes have to repair them.

So apparently different arrows dont make different damage despite them having different damage stats.

Wooden arrows do less damage than flintstone arrows. And fire arrows have only 10 piercing damage.
Yet they all do the same damage with the same bow on greylings, trolls and skeletons. (those are the ones I tested)

So I dont know why i should craft bronze arrows if the damage is basically the same. Bug?

Yes and you need to to get his item for multiple group members.
Great, we summoned the first boss 5 times so everyone could get the antlers.

Managed to play with 4 friends today, one just wanted to "check it out for an hour" and ended up after 5 hours quite perplexed where the time went, he loved it ^^

Build a small village, found two small dungeons and defeated the first boss.

I would love to rent a server now that we are 8 people, can I import my data to g-portal after I signed up there?

It's not gated off or anything. The raven just tells you to go into the black forest. Just find any black forest biome and explore it, you'll come across stuff eventually
can you summon the Raven to check what he has to say? or is it just after certain events?

and I found the black forest, but I started freezing. it is also snowy there? or did I find the spot where the black forest and the moutains meet?

and can you mark your buildings on the map, so that you can find them again, when you changed resting places?
have 3 buildings with a bed and some chest right now and just found a little village I want to repair and use as a new base.

Picked it up yesterday and feel like a complete jackass building my first home.

I go on YouTube and people are building these structurally sound fortresses, and I'm over here like, floor, floor, wall, wall, wall, door, roof! Done!

Boo. How is the stability so far on a mid range PC build? I don't normally go off what developer says are recommended specs because that never works out for me.
I have a mid-range PC at this point and I haven't had a single crash, and for the most part it runs really clean from what I can tell. Logged about 28 hours so far.
