Ah, fuck @ the eviction moratorium. I was really hoping that there'd be enough time for localities to at least start handing out rent assistance money - a few weeks or a month. Now it's gonna get really ugly really fast.

Never forget, this guy is a warhawk

He's getting his ass redistricted, it's a foregone conclusion at this point. I guess he's going out in a blaze of glory.

It's disappointing with these Republicans. They can do the right thing, stand up to their party on the insurrection, and are not afraid of Trump. But remove the Trump variable altogether and they go back to being their usual hateful, bigoted idiots trying to suppress black people from voting, hating immigrants and bombing Muslims.

Only Republicans that did a complete 180 on everything was Justin Amash and Joe Walsh, but they pretty much left the Republican party both in registration and political leaning.

Joe Walsh is a trip to read these days. Sometimes he still pisses me off, but he's basically a liberal now. I'm sure that's almost entirely because he has been completely disowned by everybody he knows. I bet if somebody threw enough money at him, he'd start the Republican rhetoric again.

Still, I'm a firm believer that people can change and I hope he has.

Anyway, yeah, Adam and Cheyney are still shit people even if they don't like Trump. They don't like the methods, it's a bit too anti-Democracy for their taste. But they like the end results in the end. It just comes down with a disagreement on how to get there. They think they can be shit people without having to steal elections outright, for example. Or that White Supremacy can reign supreme without outright being in your face racist about it.

Federal Judge Debunks Greg Abbott's COVID-Fighting Rationale, Blocks Texas Governor's Ban on Transporting Migrants

In a win for the Biden administration, a federal judge blocked an executive order by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) that would have banned the U.S. government from transporting migrants in the Lone Star State. Abbott issued the order under the banner of fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone, a George W. Bush appointee, determined that the governor's order violated the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and said Abbott's rationale did not withstand basic scrutiny.

"Indeed, recent data shows that 'migrants generally test positive at similar or lower rates than Americans living in the counties where they are tested,'" Cardone's 19-page ruling notes. "And Texas' single anecdotal example of noncitizens posing a public health risk โ€” a migrant family apparently coughing without wearing masks in a restaurant โ€” is not sufficient evidence that the Order will be effective in combating COVID-19 in Texas.
Texas cited a Fox News article showing a surge in COVID-19 rates among migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border, but the judge noted that it was relative to prior months and other migrants.

The more apples-to-apples comparison did not net the same result.

"But there is no evidence that this rate was higher than rates among U.S. citizens โ€” or any other group โ€” in the same time frame," the judge noted.

Scholars have noted that the claim that migrants bring disease has been propagated to justify xenophobic measures against immigrants for centuries, even though those claims cut against medical evidence.

Another one.

Texas father of three (soon to be four), 30 years old, has been unconscious in the ICU for weeks. He's an anti-masker, no doubt an anti-vaxxer too. Of course they have a GFM too, because the free vaccine was too expensive. Suddenly, when things affect them, they're good with socialism. It's unfortunate for his wife and kids, she seems to be more reasonable, but his situation was easily avoidable.

On July 4, 2020, Caleb helped organize "The Freedom Rally." A flyer for the event called it a peaceful protest by people "sick of the government being in control of our lives." Signs carried by protesters that day criticized the wearing of masks, business closures, the science behind COVID-19, and liberal media.

"We are not real happy with the current state of America at the moment," a then-healthy Wallace said in July.

"Show me the science that masks work," Caleb wrote on the City of San Angelo's official Facebook in December 2020. "Show me the evidence that school closures work. Show me the evidence that lock-downs work."

"Every time he would start to cough, it would turn into a coughing attack, and then that would cause him to completely go out of breath," Jessica said.

At first, Caleb refused to get tested for COVID-19, or go to the hospital.

"He was so hard-headed," Jessica said. "He didn't want to see a doctor, because he didn't want to be part of the statistics with COVID tests."

Caleb instead began taking tablets of Ivermectin, high doses of Vitamin C, zinc aspirin, and an inhaler. By July 30, however, Caleb was taken by a relative to the emergency room at Shannon Medical Center.

Later that same day, the City of San Angelo reported 111 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the community, along with 34 people hospitalized for the virus โ€” Caleb was one of them.

"He couldn't breathe on his own," Jessica said. "The first week he was able to be on oxygen. By the morning of (Aug. 8), he had to be ventilated."

They still need to screen people who they're letting into the airport, right? How are they even doing that now when there's a risk that any one of them could blow you away? Can you imagine being asked to go do a job that 13 of your coworkers died doing yesterday, and there's no reason to believe the same thing won't happen again to you today?

"Desperate for miracles" when a highly-effective, free vaccine is developed and rolled out. Zero sympathy.

if you really want to get into the minds of these people, go visit the hermancainaward reddit. It's amazing that even on their death bed, they are adamantly against the vaccine. After getting covid, one guy said he would have had to have been paid $150K to be experimented on. Then on his death bed, he was still saying he made the right choice, and was excited they were trying a new drug on him. Did he get that 150K or???
He died a couple of days later.

I hadn't read this article before but I saw it shared and it's a good one. I don't know Tim Wise so apologies if he's a problematic figure. But the premise of the article is, it's not a suicide cult, it's a mass homicide cult.

Wobbly? WTF kind of trash is that?

The press pool has asked him every day, multiple times a day if he's gonna do a 180 or regrets his decision. Short of flipping them off, he's been firm in words and movement not to double back on that.

GEORGE WILL?? Jesus Christ these papers are emptying the retirement homes for these takes.

I still can't believe the Economist dragged up Henry Kissinger's barely living body to get him to comment.
The fact that nobody high up saw that idea and said "Are you fucking serious? Absolutely not!" is a rather telling sign...

Seriously, where are these shit takes coming from?

The desire to make Biden seem just as bad as Trump was of course. You start to get the impression these people have been eagerly rubbing their hands together just waiting for American troops to die.

I couldn't do it, but these Marines are trained to put the mission before all else. It is absolutely tragic, but incredibly noble the sacrifice these guys are making to get tens of thousands of people out of dodge to hopefully live better lives outside of Afghanistan knowing that there are active threats all around you.

*Edit* - On the plus side, I've at least seen that they are collaborating a bit more with the Taliban to push the perimeter from the airport out a bit and close off certain roads/passageways that could be used to facilitate future attacks, so hopefully that gives the guys up front screening evacuees a larger buffer to deal with any future attacks. Gonna be a LONG five days though.

This is why I think Afghanistan won't be able to stick on Biden. The Right can't even keep it straight, because there is too much contradiciton. They want troops there, but also they don't. Don't negotiate with the Taliban, but also do. Save the Aghanistan people, but also don't. The troops dying in Afghanistan is horrible, but it was also fine under Trump.

That and America doesn't care about Afghanistan or its people. It's popular now because it gives people the opportunity to shit all over Biden. Some of it deserved possibly. But I don't think it holds the people's interest for very long. Most likely this coming hurricane is going to take away the attention of this story completely. Unfortunately for the people that get hit by it.

Unfortunately, he's been established in the mainstream media as a Pulitzer Prize winning Libertarian-Conservative "intellectual" for over 40 years, viewed as one of the last remaining Conservatives that hasn't jumped the shark and embraced Fascism.

Problem for Biden is Dems who won't toe the Administration line.

Like all Dems should be saying right now is:

Donald Trump negotiated a surrender agreement with Taliban with 1st May withdrawal

Biden extended it to August 1st to allow as many people to leave as possible

Afghan government did not put up any fight, in the end the people must fight Taliban, US can not.

Biden then evacuated 100k people

The other option was to increase number of troops and remain in Afghanistan forever.

The sad, sorry decline of George F. Will

The longtime Washington Post columnist was once an intellectual force to be reckoned with. No more.

OPINION

The sad, sorry decline of George F. Will

...[T]he general trend on the right in recent years has been away from reflection on ideas for their own sake, and toward fashioning an ideology to galvanize the "conservative movement" and electorally empower its chosen political vehicle: the Republican Party.

In most cases, this shift has been generational: an older, more thoughtful group of conservative thinkers and writers has been replaced by a less deeply educated and more baldly partisan cohort of ideological foot soldiers. But there is a notable exception to this tendency: George F. Will.

And isn't Will a libertarian? But he's nakedly calling for, not a better evacuation strategy, but for continued occupation of the Afghan nation even though Americans don't want it and Afghanis don't want it?

Problem for Biden is Dems who won't toe the Administration line.

Like all Dems should be saying right now is:

Donald Trump negotiated a surrender agreement with Taliban with 1st May withdrawal

Biden extended it to August 1st to allow as many people to leave as possible

Three words: Big tent party.

Democrats don't serve at the behest of the president. Not all elected officials are going to believe we did the right thing.

Some people have been really disappointing for me honestly. Jake Tapper is somebody I had high regard for with his takes of the Trump presidency, but his takes in this whole thing have been utter shit.

Tapper is deeply pessimistic and cynical, and CNN gives him the freedom to explore that. It doesn't matter what party is in charge.

View everything he does from that lens.

Do you have any legal justification for why this wasnt unconstitutional or are you just pushing partisan politics? On this one it seemed pretty damn clear that even biden expected it to get overturned and the 3 liberals are the ones not following the constitution

Think about it like this: Would they have overturned this and literally forced millions into the street if Trump was still the president?
