This is going to be what republicans run on in 2022. I don't know if it works, but it will be the main thing.

"Give us back control so we can investigate what really happened!"

Fact of the matter is that from a distance, it looks like a massive failure that resulted in the deaths of numerous American servicemen. Obviously, we know the depth to this goes way beyond just that, but republicans will market it as such and it can absolutely be effective in swaying independents.

People seem to be amped up at the media for this in a way that I hope translate to transcending the reported storyline, and I think it's because of a couple factors.

a) We have all this micro level on the ground accounts (videos from civilians, posts, anecdotes) that flies in the face of the main narrative (that it's entirely botched, America's fault, hey maybe we should stay and commit some new war crimes, too)

b) The American people aren't divided on wanting to leave. Fuck, a lot of us felt regret about the decision of ever arriving not too long after we showed up. The fact that as a teen in the 2000's even I knew we were there for purposes way less noble than marketed meant there was always this undercurrent that we were witnessing modern day Vietnam situation

c) Because people know what's happening on the ground, the futile nature of staying the course, and that we do want to be out, it's much harder to be caught in the heavy load spin cycle conservatives are trying to push. We're already pissed at the media for trying to capitalize on human suffering, here's yet more ammunition for our ire, and Fox's reporting is even more ludicrous by comparison.

I hope these things add up to Biden continuing to dig in his heels and us driving that hard line of nuance in our social circles when these media/conservative talking points come up. We shouldn't have arrived. When we did arrive, we should have been nation building, not hunting ghosts. We shouldn't have stayed, and therefore we are right to try and leave. We did leave, it went pretty badly, but we have currently evacuated 100,000+ people. That's incredible. And a real number. I would like to hope Independents are Independents due to their ability to smell foul odors like these ones.

Pretty masterful bobbing and weaving there. Let's hope the followup lives up.

Attacks by ISIS further prove what a failure the war was. Our counterterrorism efforts were so successful that ISIS is now in Afghanistan and strong enough to kill a dozen marines in one swipe. Really hammers home that the only way to maintain the illusion of success was to stay forever.

Also, this is the first time I've heard of ISIS-K. Sounds like a cereal brand.

Drone strikes radicalized a lot of people too.

Haha. Does this man understand how anything works?
It's hard to tell with these people. Are they pandering to their voters, who definitely don't understand how anything works, or do they not understand themselves? Now Lauren Bobert and Marjorie Taylor Greene… we know for a fact neither understands anything.

BREAKING: Biden hand deliver's Osama Bin Laden a hit list of hard working God-fearing American soldiers

Outrage machine in overdrive

At this point the Taliban IS the Afghan state. This was entirely reasonable in that context. They are far more capable of helping to get these people to the airport than the US military is at this point.

Yeah. They've got a pretty massive incentive not to rock the boat rn; if the international community sticks to their guns and denies them access to financial markets etc. they're going to have a massive disaster on their hands. Maybe they just say "fuckkit, killing these people is worth totally destroying any chance we'll ever have to actually govern the place" but for now I think that the leadership at least would want to try and act in good faith.

My mom voted conservative in every election until 2016 (she wrote in Reagan, so), and finally voted Dem for the first time for Biden. She just texted me(her in gray):

So that's where middle-aged "independent" voters are imo

Oh dear. This is not gonna play well to the MAGA crowd.

Just finished reading this myself -- some key quotes.

For Byrd, who is Black, the incident turned his life upside down. He has been in hiding for months after receiving a flood of death threats and racist attacks that started when his name leaked onto right-wing websites.

But in his interview with Holt, Byrd said he has no doubt that he made the right decision in light of the circumstances.

"I know that day I saved countless lives," Byrd said. "I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger. And that's my job."

Byrd also scoffed at the allegations by some that he had a political agenda.

"I do my job for Republican, for Democrat, for white, for Black, red, blue, green," he said. "I don't care about your affiliation."

He noted that when Trump was president, he escorted him through the Capitol on numerous occasions. "If he was in the Capitol and I was responsible for him, I'd do the same thing for him and his family," Byrd said.

After remaining silent for seven months as the investigations dragged on, Byrd said he wanted to speak out to counter the misrepresentations of his actions that day, even if it exposes him to more threats and vitriol.

"It's something that is frightening," Byrd said. "Again, I believe I showed the utmost courage on January 6, and it's time for me to do that now."

He said he knows that there are people who disagree with his actions that day, and may always.

"I hope they understand I did my job," Byrd said. "There was imminent threat and danger to the members of Congress. I just want the truth to be told."

I still question his decision to step forward in spite of the leaks, but there's no denying the man's courage and commitment to his duty. What an absolute disgrace he has to endure these right-wing attacks.

The framing on that story is already fucked up. "Who shot ashli babbit" more like "who save congress people from a domestic terrorist attack".

What kind of bullshit is this?

Why the heck is that headline also leaving out that she tried to break into the chamber after being warned to stay back, while for some reason going out of its way to mention she was unarmed?

On the topic of Afghanistan, I was actually surprised how relatively smoothly things were going before today. I was expecting more violence similar to what we are seeing now across the last couple of weeks. Regardless, my sympathies to all of those affected by today's tragedy.

Yes, they are also showing a peaceful crowd at a Trump rally (instead of her breaking through glass windows chasing down lawmakers) and calling her not a terrorist but a "Trump Supporter"

Why did it take me so long to realize the OT's are garbage. I mean I knew the whole Tara Reade thing was bad but this withdrawal has really drove it home for me. I may need a break from politics for a while…

Handled it well, and he better start putting more of the blame on Trump here. I want 100% all-in "he started this. We had to finish it because of him alone."

Absolutely.
We need to push back on the GOPigs' treason narrative hard. We keep parroting the above talking points. Trump made this mess. We're cleaning it up.
The GOP committed treason on Jan 6 and belong in prison for life.

Writing was on the wall, and it wasn't protecting as many people as it should have, but it is still a damn shame.

Remember a few months ago when loads of normally levelheaded people in mainstream media said "see, look, the Trumper-filled Supreme Court isn't as bad as Democrats said it would be?" Some (like Joe Scarborough and others) even went so far as to attack Dems for painting Kav and ACB as radicals.

Now it's just terrible partisan ruling after terrible partisan ruling.

I remember being news network junkie and being a twitter junkie, it's like alcohol addiction but with social media

you have to stop ERA is going ironypoison themselves into an actual depression and all of that

I don't this thread and ERA acclerating their ironypoisoning into actual CHUDs

I hate to say touch grass but really doom posting and irony poisoning is just the worst

don't accept continual misery into your hearts!

When you accept continual misery into your hearts + ironypoison it makes actual nihilism seem fucking logical

All of y'all need to cut the cord holy shit

These sentences are grating, borderline cringy but I understand what you mean. Some people still talk about watching Morning Joe here which is mind-blowing.
