A little further in that tweet thread someone points out that the restaurant sent her home as soon as they found out she was sick.

Looks like Josh Mandel is on his own here.

Robert J. O'Neill (born 10 April 1976) is a motivational speaker, Fox News contributor, and former United States Navy SEAL (1996–2012). After participating in May 2011's Operation Neptune Spear with SEAL Team Six, O'Neill was the subject of controversy for claiming to be the sole individual to kill Osama bin Laden.

This tracks for that guy if you remember who is or what he's done.

It is almost not shocking that Fox thinks it is ok to go on a murderous killing spree with 10 men in Afghanistan as long as they don't "look American".

But still, pretty fucked up they give this suggestion airtime.

Just saw the first Youngkin commercial, and to no surprise, it's anti-McAuliffe.

And to even less surprise, it reeks of GOP bullshit.

thehill.com

Youngkin ties McAuliffe to rising crime rates in new ads

Virginia GOP gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin’s campaign is tying his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, to rising crime rates in two new ads, as Republicans across the country seize …

"He wants to defund the police!"
"He wants to abolish ICE!"
"He wants to close prisons!"

It ends by saying he's "too dangerous for Virginia". Yeah, that is not going to be very effective in a blue state like Virginia.

Nevertheless, McAuliffe's response?

The best way to defend yourself against the GOP's "they're defunding the police" bullshit is having the police themselves do it for you. lmao

That said, his "crime rates are rising" talking point is a lie. Homicide rates and hate crime rates are increasing, but everything else went down in 2020, compared to the year before. Overall, there has been less crime, not more of it.

www.wdbj7.com

Virginia sees reduction in violent crime, according to state report

Overall, according to state police, Virginia experienced a 1.9 percent decrease in violent crime offenses in 2020 compared to 2019.

As for this year so far, it's kind of wishy-washy.

www.safewise.com

Virginia's Safest Cities of 2024 | SafeWise

Purcellville is the safest city in Virginia for the first time based on low per capita crime rates. See if your city also made the list!

Virginia's violent crime rate is the lowest of all states in the South Atlantic region. At 2.1 incidents per 1,000 people, Virginia's violent crime rate is 43% lower than the national average of 3.7.

But there was a slight increase in the violent crime rate year over year—Virginia creeped up 5%, from 2.0 incidents last year to 2.1.

Property crime is also lower in Virginia, with only 16.4 incidents reported per 1,000 people, compared to 21.1 nationwide. Virginia holds the second-lowest property crime rate in the South Atlantic region, behind West Virginia with 15.8 incidents per 1,000 people.

This is the third consecutive year that Virginia's property crime rate has fallen. The Old Dominion State went from 18.0 property crime incidents per 1,000 in 2019 to 16.7 in 2020 and 16.4 this year.

I think the only reason Youngkin's even using crime as a talking point is because of this:

Daily worry about crime and safety jumped 17 percentage points in Virginia this year. With 57% of survey respondents telling us they are highly concerned about safety every day, Virginia is the ninth-most-worried state.

That high level of concern is surprising given Virginia's solid track record of low crime rates. Despite more daily concern about crime and safety, 78% of Virginians feel safe in their state, giving Virginia the third-highest positive response rate in the country.

Will it work? Well, he still hasn't led in any polls so far (the closest, if I remember correctly, was him being behind by 3%...lol). So...at the moment, it hasn't. But we'll see.

As for polling right now, it's all over the place (like usual with Virginia governor races). Lots of partisan crap, but:

bluevirginia.us

Roanoke College Poll: McAuliffe Up 8 Points (46%-38%); Ayala Up 6 Points (42%-36%); Herring Up 8 Points (45%-37%)

It's been months, but we finally have an independent, non-Republican/non-Youngkin public poll (as opposed to all the Republican "internals," etc.) of the Virginia governor's race. Check out the new Ro

That poll has the GOP approval rating at 29% and Dems at 41%. 50% hate the GOP and 44% hate Dems. Northam has a 52% approval rating.

I do admit I'm nervous about Virginia's elections coming up this year. In 3 months, it'll be time to find out if Virginia's blue trifecta will hold. Hopefully, it does.

Why is it that Ohio is never brought up in these "late night count" claims? Ohio was deep ahead for Biden most of the night and voila the lead vanished when they got past early voting ballots. Do we just ignore everything that doesn't align perfectly with their bullshit?

Yep.

The problem for Youngkin is people know who McAuliffe is. We've seen what happens to Virginia under a McAuliffe term. Granted, he had to deal with the GOP controlling one chamber of the VA Congress, then the second chamber later on, but things didn't turn into a complete hellhole during his time as governor.

He's more of an establishment Dem type than Northam is, but he's also running in a state that is arguably more blue than when he ran (and later won) the first time, 8 years ago.

All things considered, the GOP are running at a disadvantage right now. Virginia is clearly a blue state, Dems are twice as popular as the GOP (the GOP nearly has a majority of people in a poll hating them) and I think only the GOP base is pissy about how things have been going for Virginia. It really feels like McAuliffe's race to lose. I think he could win by around 3-6 points. The worry for me is if they can keep a Dem trifecta, as VA House seats are also up for election this year.

And anyone who was paying attention knew about the likely delays in ballot counting from mail in voting, which were disproportionately from Dems. But those facts don't fit the narrative.

US media adopting a pro-war stance...

Considering that the media assisted the Bush administration in drumming up public support for both the Afghan and Iraq wars, no one should be surprised at this reaction to the retreat.

The US media, top to bottom, is full of a bunch of psychopaths who get just hard as a diamond at the thought of a good war it seems.

In a small bit of good news.

I'm not even sure what the argument is here tbh.

Unfortunately I have a feeling it will be appealed up to the Supreme Court who will side with Uber, Lyft, Doordash, etc. I blame fellow Californians for voting yes on Prop 22 by a large margin. Good job y'all.

Will this go past the CA Supreme Court? It's not a US Constitution issue.
Yeah this falls under an explicit state issue so it can't be appealed above state level courts. It's a state law issue involving the state constitution. So odds are good on this staying overturned

Social media reacts strongly after Mandel highlights worker at Perrysburg restaurant

Inside the Five released a statement saying it's 'disappointing' a worker came in feeling ill and sent her home, saying it has health and safety protocols in place.

The worker mentioned that her voice sounded nasally from a cold, restaurant management said, and she has been instructed to not return to work until she has been tested. Management further said that employees are instructed to never come to work with any symptoms of an illness and that the brewpub is strict with health protocols.
The brewery issued a statement to WTOL 11 on Friday afternoon:
"This is so disappointing. Last week we sent a message to our staff saying that they should report any symptoms, big or small, to a manager, and not come to work. And no one should just assume it's allergies or a cold. Although our server's intentions were good, it was not the right decision and it will be addressed. Yes, we are short-staffed, but would close our doors before we put anyone at risk. The employee has since been sent home."

Not really worth engaging with reporters just lashing out to be heard in the moment.

Edit:

Also, great thread on how little the evening news media gave a crap about Afghanistan in the last 5 years, even as Trump was maneuvering a pullout. They either believed we were genuinely going to be there forever or they're really just trying to get this to stick to Biden.

What'll happen is Uber will just re-do the prop w/out the really dumb 7/8 voting requirement to change any kind of laws relating to rideshares and just pass the prop again.

Unfortunately, people don't think of Uber drivers or Doordash delivery folks as people under the yoke of an evil corporation, especially since everybody likely has one person in their soical media circle hyping it up about how fun it is. People think yes, stronger worker rights might be necessary for a mine or even working at McDonald's, but Uber or Doordash or any of those jobs are seen as jobs you choose to take, not ones you are forced to take by your financial position.

Remember, something like 70-80% of the population has a positive impression of Amazon, something you'd never bet looking at Twitter or forums like this when it comes to them.

I find the media coverage stats a bit misleading.

Of course they wouldn't cover it over the past few years--it was relatively stable with not a lot of news happening. A troop pullout is a huge change that upset the stability of the entire country.

I firmly believe American media is garbage and wants chaos, but there is a legitimate reason they didn't give it air time and that's because there wasn't much newsworthy.

Josh Duggar Tries to Dismiss Child Porn Charges on Grounds That Trump's Homeland Security Leaders Were Unlawfully Appointed

In one of the most eye-popping arguments in a flurry of motions to toss the case against him, former "19 Kids and Counting" star Josh Duggar claimed on Friday that his child pornography charges must be dismissed because the investigation into him began under a Department of Homeland Security then-run by leaders "unlawfully" appointed by former President Donald Trump.
When federal agents started looking into Duggar in 2019, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) was under the control of Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan, and the probe continued into the tenure of Acting Secretary Chad Wolf. The Government Accountability Office later found that Trump appointed both men unlawfully, circumventing the normal process of congressional approval. Federal judges later ruled similarly, invalidating some of the agency's actions under their control.
That is one of gambits floated by Duggar's defense team in its efforts to scuttle accusations that the embattled reality TV star received and possessed a horrendous collection of dozens of photographs and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children "as young as toddlers." An HSI agent testified during Duggar's bond hearing that one of the videos, "Daisy's Destruction," was one of the "Top Five Worst of the Worst" that he ever had to examine because it depicted the assault of an 18-month-old girl.

With Three Days Left In Office, Cuomo And His Surrogates Are Still On The Attack

The governor's private attorney attacked one of his accuser's credibility, prompting her lawyer to call it "actionable post-employment retaliation."

With just three days left before New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's planned resignation, the embattled governor seemed determined not to go out quietly—though instead of appearing himself, he had his few remaining surrogates go on the offense for him.

On Friday afternoon, Cuomo's personal attorney Rita Glavin was dispatched to once again attack the women who said they were sexually harassed by Cuomo, while his senior advisor Richard Azzopardi penned an op-ed claiming Cuomo was being railroaded.

Glavin, who is being paid from Cuomo's campaign coffers, appeared in a 20-minute-long Vimeo video (no longer broadcasting from the official state website), and demanded certain corrections made to the State Attorney General's 165-page report which detailed how the governor sexually harassed 11 women.

Despite everything that's happened to him, Cuomo still can't help himself. Pathetic.

That was covered in the media and also didn't result in a shift in stability in the country itself at the time.
As mentioned, it was barely covered. And it did signal a shift in negotiating with a group that gave safe shelter to those that directly attacked the US. Obama doing the same thing would have gotten him skewered with round the clock coverage.

Anyway, it is becoming increasingly clear the media is more upset that more war isn't happening there. They're pissed the US is actually doing something that should have been done years and years ago. They know damn well that a pullout like this was always going to be chaotic.

How callous.

They have friends, colleagues, and family in the Middle East now. For some of them, they have been in Afghanistan for 20 there entire US occupation.

The existential crisis they're actually facing is the reality of 20 years of progress vanishing before their very eyes.

The Taliban banned music when they were last in power. For them, this is done serious shit.

Yes, they are too close to this situation to report objectively. But, of course, they are too close to this situation to report objectively.

It also feels like the American media is placing almost zero blame or fault on the pathetic way the Afghan government and military that we supplied and trained for decades just gave up and let it all happen.

It's all Biden's fault, though.
