DeSantis is a psychopath. Threatening to withhold pay of superintendents/school board members if they implement masks? Insanity. He wants people to die.

There is literally no science behind any of his decisions.
Article for those curious like I was:

miami.cbslocal.com

Gov. Ron DeSantis' Office: State Education Board Could Withhold Salaries Of Superintendents, School Board Members Who Implement Mask Mandates

"The State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law."

I'll be the guy to bite the bullet and say, that in a non-Trump primary, Scott could actually do decent. Probably not win, but do better than people think. There is a segment of Republican voters who want to have the trump card (I know) of being able to say they voted for a black guy/woman/Hispanic/etc. Hell, I bet some of the support for DeSantis among low info voters is people thinking he's Hispanic.

Yeah and the only way DeathSantis is going to lose is if his Cuban/Latino vote suddenly drops precipitously. He has an iron grip on that segment. If Democrats want a snowballs chance, they need to create fissures in that segment from the conservative grip. People tall a lot about The Villages and old people voting for Republicans but I kinda think that metric is overblown all things considered.

honestly I don't know what you can do to campaign against someone who is actively killing their state, and people will still vote for them.

Crazy how delusional those people are when it's fucking desantis who wants to force private businesses, the cruise lines, to go accept unvaccinated people.

Starting with W. Bush, conservative strategists, drunk on the money and connections being funneled to them, gloated about something very specific: that they were officially post-factual. They said people who studied the world and created fact-based recommendations on their observation were obsolete. Now, they would create reality with their narratives.

Everything Republicans have optimized themselves for in the last 30 years has led to this point. They are solely about talking points and party narrative. They assume they will always be able to ram their way through and absorb the collateral damage of any little people who suffer and die along the way. They really never considered what they might do in the face of a national - or global - disaster because they fundamentally didn't care about the public good.

And it looks like most of them are still going to go down with the ship.

We are living in some truly insane historic times. Think about everything that's just happened to the USA since the turn of the century, nevermind the whole world. I wish it didn't come to this, and I do think the amount of lives lost in states and pockets of conservatism that haven't taken the vaccine will truly make a big impact. Culling their own base, practically. It's tragic.

Reminds me of this article about Newt Gingrich…

The Man Who Broke Politics

Newt Gingrich turned partisan battles into bloodsport, wrecked Congress, and paved the way for Trump’s rise. Now he’s reveling in his achievements.

I'm really excited by this. There is some great meat in this bill, including a shit ton for pollution reduction and transition from fossil, some reminders:

www.whitehouse.gov

FACT SHEET: Historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal | The White House

Today, the President and the bipartisan group announced agreement on the details of a once-in-a-generation investment in our infrastructure, which will be taken up in the Senate for consideration. In total, the deal includes $550 billion in new federal investment in America’s infrastructure. The...

EV Infrastructure

U.S. market share of plug-in electric vehicle (EV) sales is only one-third the size of the Chinese EV market. The President believes that must change. The bill invests $7.5 billion to build out a national network of EV chargers. This is the first-ever national investment in EV charging infrastructure in the United States and is a critical element in the Biden-Harris Administration's plan to accelerate the adoption of EVs to address the climate crisis and support domestic manufacturing jobs. The bill will provide funding for deployment of EV chargers along highway corridors to facilitate long-distance travel and within communities to provide convenient charging where people live, work, and shop. Federal funding will have a particular focus on rural, disadvantaged, and hard-to-reach communities.

Electric Buses

American school buses play a critical role in expanding access to education, but they are also a significant source of pollution. The deal will deliver thousands of electric school buses nationwide, including in rural communities, helping school districts across the country buy clean, American-made, zero emission buses, and replace the yellow school bus fleet for America's children. The deal invests $2.5 billion in zero emission buses, $2.5 billion in low emission buses, and $2.5 billion for ferries. These investments will drive demand for American-made batteries and vehicles, creating jobs and supporting domestic manufacturing, while also removing diesel buses from some of our most vulnerable communities. In addition, they will help the more than 25 million children and thousands of bus drivers who breathe polluted air on their rides to and from school. Diesel air pollution is linked to asthma and other health problems that hurt our communities and cause students to miss school, particularly in communities of color and Tribal communities.

Airports, Ports, and Waterways

The United States built modern aviation, but our airports lag far behind our competitors. According to some rankings, no U.S. airports rank in the top 25 of airports worldwide. Our ports and waterways need repair and reimagination too. The bill invests $17 billion in port infrastructure and $25 billion in airports to address repair and maintenance backlogs, reduce congestion and emissions near ports and airports, and drive electrification and other low-carbon technologies. Modern, resilient, and sustainable port, airport, and freight infrastructure will support U.S. competitiveness by removing bottlenecks and expediting commerce and reduce the environmental impact on neighboring communities.

Clean Drinking Water

Currently, up to 10 million American households and 400,000 schools and child care centers lack safe drinking water. The deal's $55 billion investment represents the largest investment in clean drinking water in American history, including dedicated funding to replace lead service lines and the dangerous chemical PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl). It will replace all of the nation's lead pipes and service lines. From rural towns to struggling cities, the deal invests in water infrastructure across America, including in Tribal Nations and disadvantaged communities that need it most.

Environmental Remediation

In thousands of rural and urban communities around the country, hundreds of thousands of former industrial and energy sites are now idle – sources of blight and pollution. 26% of Black Americans and 29% of Hispanic Americans live within 3 miles of a Superfund site, a higher percentage than for Americans overall. Proximity to a Superfund site can lead to elevated levels of lead in children's blood. The deal invests $21 billion in environmental remediation, making the largest investment in addressing the legacy pollution that harms the public health of communities and neighborhoods in American history, creating good-paying union jobs in hard-hit energy communities and advancing economic and environmental justice. The bill includes funds to clean up superfund and brownfield sites, reclaim abandoned mine land and cap orphaned gas wells.

Power Infrastructure

As the recent Texas power outages demonstrated, our aging electric grid needs urgent modernization. A Department of Energy study found that power outages cost the U.S. economy up to $70 billion annually. The deal's $73 billion investment is the single largest investment in clean energy transmission in American history. It upgrades our power infrastructure, including by building thousands of miles of new, resilient transmission lines to facilitate the expansion of renewable energy. It creates a new Grid Deployment Authority, invests in research and development for advanced transmission and electricity distribution technologies, and promotes smart grid technologies that deliver flexibility and resilience. It invests in demonstration projects and research hubs for next generation technologies like advanced nuclear reactors, carbon capture, and clean hydrogen.

It's a really good 550 billion dollar bill. 110 of the bill is for bridges, roads, etc. 11 Billion is for safety. Literally (not quite) everything else is supporting environmental concerns or similar. I'm legit excited.

So, am I correct in understanding that this bill has defacto banned Crypto... By accident?

Because that'd be truly amazing.

lol the fallout from crypto carls will be amazing
Yeah, from what I've read it'd basically require miners and brokers to give the IRS info they can't possibly *have*, so... They're kinda just fucked.

Does that mean mining is finally going to stop?
It's gonna get bodied, at least.

What was in the bill for us on SSI/SSA?

It was just rumored, or at minimum speculated on, but back in July:

Judging by that picture, I guess what happened is that SSI expansion was a top priority for possible inclusion in the bill, but it wasn't a definite thing. Maybe it had been considered at one point, only for circumstances to change, I suppose.

It's really unfortunate. SSI expansion is desperately needed.

Job growth so strong, the GOP is (literally) at a loss for words

For months, Republicans tried to draw a direct connection between the White House's economic agenda. As it turns out, that wasn't a good idea.

The economy is recovering so quickly that everyone in the GOP is speechless.

As for Donald Trump, the good news is, he acknowledged during his latest Fox News appearance that the economy under Biden is improving. The bad news is, the former president -- who swore for months that the economy would collapse if Biden took office -- insisted he deserves the credit for recent gains.

...Well, almost everyone.

Iirc there were economist surveys suggesting if Biden got his economic plans through, we'd see 3% unemployment by the end of his first term. Unless Trump runs again and reactivates the cultists who are only in it for him, we could see the closest to a 1984 redux/mirrored possible in today's climate.

(Which… let's be real is still only Biden winning by 10% and flipping like, NC, FL, TX and maybe OH and IA, but I wouldn't say no to that result!)

Lol just looked it up and CBO is forecasting 3.6% unemployment by the end of next year. And that doesn't factor in what the economy looks like after Biden's infrastructure bills pass. Could make for a very interesting midterm.

The government literally gives soldiers (and all other service members) an additional allowance that is tax-free specifically for housing (as long as they're E-5 and above or an E-4 will over 4 years of service). Not to mention they would still be getting their pay this whole time, so they would have no issue paying their rent.

It's fascinating to see the GOP in FL and TX being so pro-company for decades, "They can do whatever they want!", to now fighting companies who want to save lives. From death panels to death cult in just over a decade.

I mean what do the new ones look like? If they look like the old ones but just have a sticker slapped on them saying they're energy efficient I don't think that'll be as big a deal.

Don't get me wrong Republicans will still fucking complain about it just like they do with literally everything in their lives but at least in the sense that they won't actually notice the change in their neighborhoods, just pick up on it from dipshit Fox News talking points. "These new school buses are terrible! Thank god our children are still riding the old reliable!" (as their kids are being picked up by Tom Hanks superbuses)

The inflation talk was a huge Dunning-Kruger moment for most of the political world. I'm not an expert on economics, but if the Fed isn't worried about it, then neither am I.

LEDs SAVE YOU MONEY long term over the old incandescent bulbs and yet Trump led that particular front in the never-ending culture war. You're right that the rank and file will just repeat Fox talking points as usual, but they don't need to actually see a difference to get outraged.

Hell, let's see in a few months time if there's a story about a Texas or Florida community raging at their schoolboard over the new buses - when their district hasn't even considered updating the fleet yet.
