In fact if you go back earlier to pre-George Floyd we have recent data that proves people of all races support more police officers.

The fact that even among African-Americans support for the police can be found as high as the 40s I think is something most in the social media bubbles don't realize. I'm sure some of it is the usual "my cops are fine, it's everywhere else that are bad" stuff, but there's still a pretty sizable majority of people who really don't see the problem in the stark terms others do, even before you start looking at conservative whites.

Will that meaningfully change because of these protests? Maybe, but people pushing for abolishment as a national goal seem like they're just putting the cart before the horse.

A guy says that the US is falling apart and people are leaving quotes, without a shred of self-awareness, a guy who left the US because of its problems with racism and wealth inequality. But the protestors are the problem.

The OANN reporter behind the false report that led to Trump's tweet is a Russian national who also writes for Kremlin-owned Sputnik, according to The Daily Beast.

The fact that RT/Sputnik freely traffics between far-right outlets and far-left ones is worth noting, but I understand Hillary not being the best messager here to broadside how easy it is to manipulate people who reflexively hate institutions.

Johnny Verhovek @JTHVerhovek

.@JoeBiden tonight at a virtual fundraiser on Trump's Buffalo tweet: "He was condemning the older man who was knocked down with his head bleeding and everyone walking by. Did you see that? I mean, my lord. What have we become if we abide by this? So much we can do and must do."

G.O.P. Scrambles to Respond to Public Demands for Police Overhaul (Published 2020)

Republicans have been startled by the extent to which public opinion has shifted in recent days after the killings of unarmed black Americans by the police and the protests that have followed.
But privately, Republican lawmakers and aides conceded they had few proposals ready to offer and were instead racing to reach a consensus about how to proceed. Late Tuesday afternoon, Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, rushed to Capitol Hill with Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, to huddle with Republicans about what they could quickly agree on.

The dilemma for Republicans is urgent. For decades, their party has been built on the legacy of the "Southern strategy," in which candidates sought to win over onetime Democrats by portraying themselves as tough on crime and disorder.

Admit that they have no solutions, have people like Jared who have the batting average of a stump and it works against their own records but hey man, the GOP are on it.

There is a zero chance Trump and the gop move at all on police reform in any way. Any sort of minor change at all will have all the unions screaming they are anti cop, regardless of how toothless or pointless they are.

police reform right now would go about as well over with his support and base as amnesty for DACA immigrants would

Theyve backed themselves into a corner where any sort of adjustments will mean Trump folded and he is weak on crime

he has no choice but to double down and ride with denying there is any sort of problem with how policing works in this country. Regardless of how much it hurts him doing the opposite will hurt him more

This reminds me of when we didn't do the smart thing last time and vote for Jeff Kessler.

Have fun with more Jim Justice I guess.

Well the results in coal country should finally shut down the notion that voters there are secret socialists. Bernie is behind a random dude named David Lee Rice.

Biden's great political calculus of not saying "I will unemploy all of West Virginia" did give Bernie as much political leeway than he had last time against Hillary

Never going to happen. Jim being Republican-Lite is the only Dem you're going to get through, and he went full GOP anyway.
I know this might get thrown around a lot, but unless you're from here, don't claim to understand politics in WV. We barely do.

The Democratic Party held power here forever. They ran the state into the ground. I don't know what people expect. When we elect a democrat, it's just republican that changed party affiliation a month prior. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Problem is that his approvals went way down and stayed there after he switched parties. You would think the opposite would have happened in one of Trumps best states but it didn't. He's not a good politician or governor and most seem to be annoyed with him. It's obviously an outside chance but WV is weird and doesn't mind heavy heavy ticket splitting.

I know nothing about West Virginia, but according to NYT election page, a total of 148,000 Democrats have voted in their primary vs 156,000 Republicans thus far with a little bit more Democratic votes in. That seems pretty close.

I know there are a lot of Democrats that are still registered that way but vote with Republicans and are conservative, but do Democrats have any shot in the Governor's race this fall?

CNN starting their election year horse race bullshit. I don't think "Conservatives in Trump country plan to vote for Trump" is worthy of the top story when visiting CNN, but what do I know.

The leade: "After one of the most controversial weeks of Trump's presidency, signs of his reelection are blossoming"

A world away from Washington, loyal supporters stand by the President in Trump country

Some of President Donald Trump's loyal supporters are becoming well-practiced in the art of forgiveness, saying they are drawn to his record and willing to overlook his rhetoric.

Sigh...

We had exactly ONE gubernatorial candidate that showed up and marched with Black Lives Matters protestors in Charleston. It was Stephen Smith.

We fucked up again.

Zero chance. Jim Justice would have to get caught in a "dead girl, live boy" situation, and honestly Republicans have come around a fair bit on the latter

Having a decent, caring, humble man back in the White House is going to be so god damn refreshing after the last 3+ years. I know his politics don't excite everyone, but having a President like him will still be a big deal after what we've been through.

I doubt anyone engaging in arguments about whether "defund the police" is a bad slogan are still deciding whether to vote for Biden vs Trump.

I think you missed the point of the article.

It's saying that silly infighting is distracting from more important matters.
No, I read the article. I just think it's making a mountain out of a molehill. I really don't think people have forgotten how evil the GOP are or what's at stake if Trump is re-elected.
