I feel like IBD/TPP has weird ass margins basically the entire election and then randomly picks a reasonable margin on the last day and then the next election cycle they say they were the most accurate and no one remembers enough to check.

why would any sane person give a shit about a jill stein vote cast in new york. honestly, who cares? what does it do?

Demonstrates that said voter is a profoundly poor judge of character, BUT!!!! I don't care. I would rather she have voted for Orb Mother though. Write-in campaign.

The idea that because you live somewhere where your vote "doesn't matter" (foh) you can very publicly vote for a joke candidate but then demand to be taken seriously is nuts.

That's what Rasmussen does, have wildly inflated polls for republicans, then as election day gets closer, they start to fall in line, so that they actually reflect reality, and don't get treated like jokes by pundits.

I mean, that is a good burn.

If elections were won by sick burns on twitter, bernie wouldn't be struggling.

Just authority in rulers can be exercised for the good of subjects, if necessary even against the subjects' own perceptions of what is best for them—perceptions that may change over time anyway, as the law teaches, habituates, and re-forms them. Subjects will come to thank the ruler whose legal strictures, possibly experienced at first as coercive, encourage subjects to form more authentic desires for the individual and common goods, better habits, and beliefs that better track and promote communal well-being.

It ain't hyperbole to say that modern Conservatism is post-democratic.

The question is how bad does it need to get before your average American realizes that. I surmise: REAL.FUCKIN.BAD

Edit: I am sure most of you caught this when it was a fresh dung heap, but for anyone that missed it

Conservative Nationalism Is Trumpism for Intellectuals

At the National Conservatism Conference, there was an open embrace of Trump’s immigration rhetoric and policies, and signals that the old conservative consensus—markets and moralism—has been broken.

Wonder who's gonna be conducting the interviews. Bring on Plouffe and Axelrod.

Gonna be tons of pressure (most in history probably) since we need someone to excite the base + be worthy for 2024.

I'd say conservatism has always been anti-democratic.

I haven't been this frightened by an article in a while. The rise of authoritarianism seems to be almost inevitable.

The very minor silver lining is that the more they show their asses, the easier it becomes for new Democratic reps to get on board with court packing/ expansion.

But we will be stuck with most of these fascists for our lifetimes

Just because today isn't complete without pointing out DeSantis is a spineless fuckwit, we had a 1000 new cases in Floriduh, 14 more deaths.

That magical firewall between urban areas and the boonies doesn't exist, which isn't a surprise to people who aren't already in the Trump cult

It's either that or the US will break apart. Parts of the country aren't going to go for their vision of authoritarian rule where individual liberty is trampled in favor of what they view as the common good. At least not without violent conflict and forced subjugation.

This has really come out into the open the past 6 months or so, especially when that BAN PORN debate sprung up in conservative circles. The right want the courts to start ruling on morality and keep pushing that the "reason" the United States is currently a "moral cesspool" is because of the old guard of the Republican Party being too willing to go with the flow and just accept things like gay rights as inevitable.

"We asked for 1.795 million masks and we have gotten 400,000 total," IL Gov. JB Pritzker to @ChrisCuomo. "We have asked for many, many gloves and gowns and so on - we have gotten about 10% of what we asked for. We needed testing early on, they were promising millions of tests"
"The truth is: we've gotten very few tests from the federal government, and in fact, their federal testing is slowed down because they throw it all at LabCorp and Quest and they have a huge backlog," saying those tests take 4-10 days vs IL tests that take 1-2 days

If elections were won by sick burns on twitter, bernie wouldn't be struggling.

But of course. I'm merely commenting on the solidness of the burn.

It's interesting, because Gray was more... pragmatic before? Probably more pragmatic than some here. That might've been because it was framed in defending Sanders, but:

theintercept.com

Calling Out Racist Voters Is Satisfying. But It Comes at a Political Cost.

Bernie Sanders’s clumsy comments about voters in Florida and Georgia reignited a debate on how politicians talk about racism.
But the question of how politicians should characterize Trump supporters is a different matter altogether. Some Trump voters are certainly racist. But is it worth the strategic risk for politicians to call them out?

A POLITICIAN MUST be persuasive. She must be many things for many people. She must represent the masses, and appeal to thousands, if not millions.

Consequently, setting aside extreme examples like white supremacists, terrorists, or abusers, politicians often take "the customer is always right" approach when it comes to voters. They might be cajoled, but they're rarely criticized.

Whether or not you agree that reasonable minds can differ on the issue of police violence, it's hard to argue that O'Rourke's soft touch didn't help his argument. His approach — which some might call "good politics" — acknowledges what Zak Cheney-Rice, writing about Sanders in New York magazine, noted when he said that "calling racist white people 'racist' is probably a good way to ensure they do not vote for you." At 72 percent of the country, white Americans are still a necessary part of any political coalition, and the geographic distribution of ethnic groups combined with our electoral college system means white votes are weighted more heavily than others.

Like it or not, the opinions of white voters matter, and politicians have to balance the validation that marginalized communities deserve against the anxieties of white voters. As Cheney-Rice noted, it's frustrating that white voters' sensitivity about being called racist often becomes a more central part of the national conversation than the actual consequences of experiencing racism.

But the consequences of not considering white voters in one's political messaging strategy are more than just frustrating. To millions of black and brown people, LGBTQ Americans, women, immigrants, and differently abled people, they are existential. In just the last two years, voting protections have been bulldozed, transgender rights stripped, and the deficit exploded on a tax giveaway to the rich — and that's just the tip of the iceberg. If Democrats can't win in 2020, things will only get worse.

Intriguing. Even if it was from 2 years ago.

Non-comprehensive medical coverage requiring 65+ year-olds to have supplemental insurance to cover costs, in a medical system they have to navigate themselves (assuming they have access to one), and can digest pages and pages of supporting documentation per month, is the only ethical position?

For everyone else, a strained application process for coverage that varies in resources and funding state by state, with special carve-outs for children that can be halted by the President or Congress at any time, is the only ethical position?

The medical debate this election cycle has utterly failed. In a time of pandemic, the medical systems may well follow.

Problem with the media harping on 100k dead is what happens when it's below that. I think engaging on projections this much beyond mentioning them is probably not the right course of action.

This is my worry too. What if we end up with 23k dead? That's a horrific number and could have totally been preventable but latching onto the 100k - 240 is setting the bar so unbelievably high for unacceptability that it's putting us in a situation where Trump gets a "pass" if the horrific numbers don't surpass that.

Considering how heavily she leans on criticism of Hillary Clinton to talk about pragmatism in addressing racism, this honestly doesn't seem like a jump from where she is now.

Serious Question:

Which crazy Trump judge will be the first to rule that local/ state stay-at-home orders are unconstitutional and puts a nationwide injunction on them?

I will accept Circuit guesses too

you know....maybe just in general, the amount of supplies available isn't able to handle the requests by states to the federal government....i feel like another President would have been able to convey that they are doing their best, rationing supply and materials to states based on most need. Of course with Trumpy, anything he gets called, its a fucking lie.

Hate this man.

lololol, Pence is at the podium showing off a new "30 days to slow the spread" card the way he'd held up the last one that said 15 days. Like it's literally the same thing only with a different number plastered on it. I look forward to the next one that says 60 days.
That sounds familiar.

Does anybody know of a good source with the change in Coronavirus cases per day, by state? There are plenty with graphs of the total number of cases or change for the current day, but it would be really useful to see how the acceleration is changing over time by state.
Here. View the raw data, you can see the counts for pos and neg tested, hospitalized and deaths, for each State daily.

This is always how it has been. American history is full of conservative authoritarian snapbacks after social advancement.

That the GOP has to rely on stacking the courts and the EC because the popular vote and the popular sentiment are with democratic ideals rather than the authoritarian ones that the GOP believes in is comfort, though, because I'm not sure that's ever been true in the history of this country before.

I get that governors are asking for ventilators but it's like me asking for copies of FF7 remake part 2. They don't exist. Where are they supposed to come from? Trump can DPA them but that's months away. Agree blaming him for his past fuckups is fair (he should have done this in January). But still. Like are people gonna tweet daily about how they're not getting their orders filled?

It's not so much that they want him to produce them right now, but to impress upon him that they'll need them at some point, and he needs to start pushing companies to make them so that they're available when the peak comes.

He had to time to invoke the order when he saw this coming months ago. There's no excuse for him dragging his feet on it. And good that he's getting blame for this. He should be reminded every single day how much of a failure he is.
