Those independent numbers are not good for republicans.

Also, check out the Fox News effect in the republican belief in public health officials.

The Trump administration is asking Congress to approve a massive economic stimulus package of around $850 billion to stanch the economic free fall caused by the coronavirus, four officials familiar with the planning said Tuesday.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will present details to Senate Republicans later Tuesday. The package would be mostly devoted to flooding the economy with cash, through a payroll tax cut or other mechanism, two of the officials said, with some $50 billion directed specifically to helping the airline industry. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

It's unclear how warmly the design of the White House's proposal will be received. Trump has for several weeks pushed Congress to cut or eliminate the payroll tax, which is paid by employees and employers and funds Social Security and Medicare benefits. Many Democrats have complained that such a tax cut would not necessarily directly benefit people who have lost jobs because of the coronavirus crisis. But lawmakers have, in recent days, talked about the need for a huge economic package to stabilize the economy, and it's likely that some ideas are being revisited.

I don't normally advocate political grandstanding, but if Trump tries to throw this at Dems they need to tell him to fuck off. Many Republicans themselves now say direct cash is a better idea than a payroll tax cut, and money specifically to the airline industry is just bad optics when so many other industries are suffering. Doubly so if he still wants to bail out casinos and cruise ships at all in his proposal, fuck that noise. We need direct cash/ubi/yangbucks and strengthening the paid sick leave provisions that were weakened in the previous bill. House Dems hold all of the leverage here.

Lmao. Trump is such an idiot. What an unbelievably stupid idea. He might literally cause a civil war. Does he really think people are gonna just sit there and take it when they dont have a job or any way to feed their families? And he wants to do something that hurts people's social security?

John Roberts @johnrobertsFox

.@FoxNews has learned that @realDonaldTrump will ask Congress for more than $800 billion in economic stimulus: $500 bil in payroll tax cut, $250 bil in Small Business Association loans, $58 billion for the airlines, and a smattering of other items.

NO... and if yes.. I will give you a Payroll Tax cut for the next 6 months in exchange of gutting the Tax bill you passed a few years ago.

Yeah payroll tax makes no sense whatsoever when people are going to be out of work for 4-8 weeks.

Also the Dow is slowly sinking down from the opening.

EDIT: Also going by Trump's tweets, I'm guessing yesterday he got shook for a couple of hours but his fruit-fly sized brain has already forgotten the briefings he got that scared the shit out of him and he's now back to settling scores.

What is his obsession with the payroll tax cut? It doesn't even address unemployment or provide any benefit to people actually out of work. It would be a complete waste of money. Dems better hold the line on shutting that nonsense down.

I'm getting shades of 2008 with the way the Republican party seems to be losing cohesion with the immediate response. The lunatics in the asylum are holding things up while the kindler, gentler ones are breaking messaging.

Trump being serious for three seconds means we are in Deep Shit and he is aware that he is losing authority -- the thing is, this is inimical behavior to the base that got him elected, and he naturally can't keep from being an impulsive, belligerent asshole for an extended period of time.

Is Trump aware of the fact that he is going down as the second coming of Herbert Hoover?

Tom Cotton said he wants the checks over the payroll tax cut yesterday, so who knows.
I still think the base 1000 is a bad idea. Give it to people who really need it. I'm working from home and getting full pay. My wife works in a clinic and is getting full pay. I'd rather the money go to people who can't open their doors and worrying about failing businesses.

What am I going to spend1,000 on right now? Amazon? Groceries? They aren't hurting

Morning Joe can fuck off with the "he's acting so presidential" takes. If Democrats lose it's because the media gave him a break like a parent giving a five year old props for saying 'thank you'.

Honestly, there's no real downside to just giving people money. You might not spend it right now, but after things chill out?

Rent, mortgage, utilities. I doubt we're getting an Italian-style moratorium any time soon.

I would like to put down a deposit on a PS5 and XSX so that could work for me.

Also even if people just use it to cover rent and bills and stuff... so what's the problem? Then it's just a preventative measure against millions of people defaulting on their debt or getting evicted, which would be even more devastating.

Normally I'm right there with you. However, this is one of those things where ease of distribution is important. Don't waste time means checking it, just give it to everyone. Plus, since it's a one time thing, there's no reason to cause people to get pissed they didn't get a check when Joe Blow down the road did. Just cut everyone $1000 or whatever and be done with it. If you take that $1000 and put it into a local business struggling to keep the doors open, it's a win win for everyone involved.

It's a bit blunt to just do it for everyone but probably the most efficient. It's not just about giving it to people who need it, but getting money flowing in the economy. You need transactions and spending for an economy to function.
