Did i mention that the world news (Primer Impacto) likes to show graphic footage like its nothing? I really don't understand how anyone can watch this shit all day and not want to bash their head against the wall.

Oh yeah, the levels of not-give-a-fuck are hilarious. Especially considering how neutered network TV news is.

US Network TV: "What you are about to see maybe disturbing." *censors guy getting punched in the face*

Primer Impacto: "Oh right, this happened-" *show blown limbs of deceased children from cartel IED*

Op, "Latinos", as in the plural, encompasses both the male and female forms of the words when referring to a group. It's the form recognized by the RAE.
The use of the x isn't recognized and may confound people.

On topic, I've always found Mexican TV to be corny and cheesy and hell. The Chilean news channels (except one that's know for being sensationalist) are far more grounded, plus showing graphic stuff is forbidden by law. Whenever I travel abroad, if Univision or Telemundo are the only Latin American news channels available, I'll probably say fuck it and put either the BBC or CNN.

Most tv in general is sexist as hell but I feel like Hispanic tv takes it up a notch where women are used purely for sexual purposes.

There are full episodes of Rosa de Guadalupe on youtube. I tried to watch one and holy shit why does show still air?

It feels the void of horribly depressing stories left by the dissapearance of "stories of abused women" kind of shows that were a staple of mexican tv, these shows are similar but have a more uplifting tone, so old people pretty much watch them as a replacement.

It's been this way since as long as I can remember. Sure it's depressing but for a long ass time it wasn't my primary way to learn what's going down in Latin America.

I still think it's some dumb white people shit.
People here are indeed touchy about it, and I do wonder how many of them are actually Latin Americans and/or Spanish speakers, I daresay not many.
I get why not everyone uses the term, but calling it some "dumb white people shit" or questioning the identity of actual Spanish speaking Latin Americans is inaccurate and frustrating. Just because you have never heard Latin Americans use the term does not mean none of us do.

We are an incredibly diverse, huge group of people, spread over multiple continents, countries, and communities. Some people in these communities feel more comfortable using the term Latinx. That does not make them any less Latino than you, does not make them white, and does not mean they aren't Spanish speakers. Please respect what words people use to identify themselves without calling their ethnic and linguistic identity into question. That goes for all terms, including just using Latino.

My mom only tunes to Univision because watches Mi marido tiene más familia at 9PM EST. It's a sappy, goofy feel good soap opera with a theme song that always plays around 9:17-9:18pm. I don't get why she watches it but she finds it entertaining so eh. Otherwise, when it's not that shows, it's Caso Cerrado reruns at 2PMEST and 7PM EST on Telemundo.

I'm quite surprised there's a remake of Betty La Fea on Telemundo but it's a remake of Ugly Betty so there's a few characters that speak English, trying to make to make it NYC, and other stuff. The production values were quite good from what I saw of it. As I type this, my mom is watching a Juanes concert on Telemundo.

As a kid, being forced to watching Primer Impacto, Cristina, and Sabado Gigante at my granparents' house was torturous. A mix of depressing, sensationalist, and soft-core porn crap.

That and that Resturant anthology show which is just the same, uplifting but still with an edge. My mom watches that shit.

I just watch Univision for Liga MX at this point although last week, they played Book of Life.

Oh my god, I did not know about this. I still remember watching the Colombian original. How did we get to this point.

Basically, the OG exploded in all of latin america, different countries began to make their own version, which continued to be popular leading to the creation of Ugly Betty for the american audience and this new version brought up probably was made thinking of the Hispanic audience who has never been outside the USA.

That makes sense.
When I searched it on youtube, this one was the top result.

Oh god now I have the Primer Impacto song in my head. What about Al Rojo Vivo? Is that Univision or Telemundo? That shit is just as graphic.

I keep Univision on for background noise because it's the only channel I get reliably in my apartment, and because I'm kind of half assed trying to learn Spanish.

I have no idea what's being said, but I agree that it seems pretty depressing all the time. It seems hyper critical of Trump, at least, which other news stations should be doing more of. But again, I don't know what they're saying, so maybe they're not as hyper critical as I think they're being.

The thing that shocked me is how much religious stuff they play. Like Rosa de Guadalupe and this show called Jesus. It's all during prime time too.

Basically this. I mean just look at the synopsis for the reboot:

Esta serie se enfoca en una mujer joven de Mexico que vive en Nueva York. Ella persigue sus sueños en un mundo donde la imagen lo es todo.

Translation for the non-Spanish speaking people: This series focuses on a young Mexican woman who lives in New York. She pursues her dreams in a world where looks are everything.

Univision ruined me, I'm constantly saying "que bien" in Tony Dandrades' voice. I've not said those words in that order without saying it like Tony Dandrades in, like, 18 years.

I know, but I still don't get it. My family (and I because it was on) watched the original, the first Mexican remake, and the beginning of Ugly Betty. They're probably watching this show too. Three times wasn't enough?!

Everything you say is true, let's not forget the brainwashing since they tend to spread a lot of fake news (more than American news imo). My family would watch it religiously and say ridiculous things like drinking milk can kill you or whatever my mom used to tell me because she heard it on the news. You aren't wrong about the graphic part either. The news showing dead bodies, car accidents, people shot like it was nothing. I never understood how my mom watches that stuff and wonder if that attributed to her bad outlook on life since she always sees things negatively. My dad at least used to watch American movies every now and then.

I was actually thinking this very same thing a while back that it's too nonchalant with their censorship and shows are, in my opinion, sexist and homophobic. Heck, even my mother moved on to another channel where they show soap operas from other countries that are more grounded and not stereotypical like they are on Univision.

I only watch Univision for the local news. Everything else in that channel it's not just for me and really hard to watch like Primer Impacto.

Was there a vote somewhere? Haha.

Apparently it's commonly used among the more "educated" and "academic" members of our culture.

Us lowly peasants wouldn't understand

I think a soap opera on Univision was one of the first sex scenes I saw as a kid.

My family doesn't even speak Spanish, I was just like "lol Spanish TV?"

How the fuck did you guys manage to turn this into a "complain about the term Latinx" thread?

But since we're talking about this, I'm eating cheetos horneados right now, and it absolutely pisses me off that this is something I've only seen in Colombia yet it's still pronounced "chi-toes" because such pronounciations are fundamentally incompatible with Spanish. Also, give me a moment to whine about all those Spanish speakers who pronounce words like 'gay' without using the Spanish a. These are things that represent incomprehensible concepts to me and make me feel incredibly angry.

Trash TV, but it's even worse during commercials.

The commercials need to be nuked from orbit.

Only spaniards to through those weird lenghts to pronounce extranjerismos like it would sound in spanish, you are supposed to say gay like "gey" instead of gay like "gaia".

What's wrong with how we pronounce cheetos? :( Also, I would like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that they are better than regular cheetos.
