UC2's gunplay and encounter design doesn't hold up quite as well as I remembered, but TLOU never really did anything for me to begin with.

Uncharted 2 bc it's fun. I loved TLOU both times I played it but Uncharted 2 is the culmination of ND since Crash 1.
TLOU as good as it is marks a reset for a different era that I don't love as much.

i love TLoU, but UC2 is just phenomenal start to finish with some of the best set-pieces ever made.

TLoU is better story-wise for sure, but it's not something that I enjoy replaying like UC2

TLOU. Everything important (story, characters, music) was better then Uncharted 2. Last of Us introduced classic side characters like Tess and so many others. Uncharted 2 introduced a dude name Jeff 😑

Both games are topped by Uncharted 4 though.
I hope this was an accident but youre overlooking the introduction of the only other UC protagonist we've had in Chloe

To me, any story that is about assholes in the apocalypse murdering each other is apocalypse porn. The sequel ratcheted up the misery even more, but at the end of the day, the first game was still a depressing game full of terrible people being terrible to each other.
But that's not The Last of Us. It's not just "assholes in the apocalypse murdering each other." Both parts of The Last of Us have a broad color palette including funny characters and moments, likeable characters and moments, heartwarming characters and moments, tragic characters and moments, characters and moments without any murder or killing involved, etc.

They are fundamentally rich and human stories - moreover, they're fundamentally westerns. You could take the exact plot and character beats of both The Last of Us games and put them in 1850s Utah, and little would change (except perhaps the body count). Would you call that "western porn"?

Of course, a core theme of the series is 'the last of us', i.e. the kinds of people who would survive a protracted, extremely violent disaster for 20+ years (NB a lot of modern western fiction is also about those kinds of people). So yeah there's a lot of nasty shit without a doubt. But people act like it's all grimdark – it's not. It's colorful and brilliantly paced, with plenty of upbeat and happy as well as grim.

I just don't jive with the apocalypse fiction genre unless it's treated with inherent silliness.
I do get this though, insofar as you might more broadly want to avoid really heavy media (because life is usually heavy enough). Let's just not misrepresent some great art, here!

UC2 is still my favourite in the series, I can play it over and over again, it's like watching an Indiana Jones film. The Last of Us is depressing as fuck and although it's still a great game I only ever finished it twice and have no desire to play it again.

uncharted 2

ironically, last of us' gunplay being so much like uncharted is a big flaw

the big gunfights with bullet sponge enemies works in a pulpy action thriller but not in a realistic survivor shooter. last of us 2's gameplay is a big improvement

uncharted 2 also has a minority character that is not only heroic but survives the entire game (TENZIN FTW) which is more than both last of us games can say

I don't remember TLOU's enemies really being bullet sponges though? Definitely nothing on the level of Uncharted 2.

Otherwise agree on all, wholeheartedly.

I've bounced off Uncharted 2 all three times I've tried to play it. I don't know if I get the hype tbh. Maybe it's my fault for wanting to do all the games back to back so it always followed me playing Uncharted 1 and I just can't play that much Uncharted in a row but idk the game seemed... fine. A very repetitive routine of shooting large areas full of enemies with passable shooting mechanics followed by the vague gesturing in the direction of cinematic platforming.

I say this as someone who loves the Tomb Raider games and enjoyed the Indiana Jones movies that Uncharted took everything about it's identity from.

The Last of Us, meanwhile, well I've only played it once but it was a great experience. I never considered putting it down for a second while going through it.

So my answer is clearly Crash Bandicoot Warped.

Uncharted 2 has the better cast, better soundtrack and more enjoyable multiplayer. And I like Nate > Joel.

Faction is also fun tho.

maybe TLOU1's enemies were less bullet spongey than Uncharted but it felt the same to me. I think the initial E3 gameplay showcase set my expectations too high because the AI in the final game was really bad. Youtuber hyperbithero, did a good analysis video on it

in contrast to his glowing analysis of TLOU2's gameplay

To me, although I will say that The Last of Us is a better game than Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, at the same time, The Last of Us completely lacks any repayability for me because it was more story driven than Uncharted 2.

UC1 has definitely aged badly. A lot of the encounter design is absolutely broken by modern standards. The Customs House is like some kind of sick joke, I don't know how it made it past playtesting. As is that weird square room with all the water on the floor and the scaffolding everywhere.

I still LIKE UC1, but its encounter design is reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllly rough. They learned a lot from making that game and you can literally feel the encounter design getting smarter and more thought out with each subsequent game, especially as Nate's combat options become more and more fleshed out.

UC1 was almost outright bad when I first played it a couple years after it came out. Aiming felt bad and slow (often looks like Drake is aiming far to the right of where the cursor is), arena design was static and dull, actually suffers from the "waves of enemies" complaints wrongfully levelled At UC2 & 4 (where enemy waves literally just pour into the existing boring arena), enemies both not reacting enough to being hit and juking around in bizarre & annoying ways when your cursor moves over them, complete delineation between "climbing segments" and shootouts, and puzzles that are not only hyper basic (most of the series is guilty of that) but also uninteresting thematically or visually. don't even need to get into the jet ski portion to summarise how I almost didn't play 2 after finishing 1 at the behest of a friend.

2 was my favourite game for a bit after playing—literally every complaint I had about the first was addressed and they went far beyond just improving stuff from the first. I can still play from ch. 5 to ch. 16 (at least, if not straight to the end) without ever wanting to skip a part or put the game down.

2 of the best games of all time. I can't pick one over the other, but it will be interesting to see how the poll turns out.

When you think about, Uncharted 2 kinda deserved the remake treatment that tlou received.

Uncharted 2 remake for PS5 would be one hell of a next gen blockbuster

Uncharted 2 may have aged worse than TLOU, but it's still the best damn game that studio has made. Perfectly paced, amazing set pieces, likable characters, serviceable gameplay, amazing multiplayer. They'll never hit like that again. Uncharted 2 is a bonafied masterpiece a Disney classic, TLOU is some mid ass MCU fodder.

Not even a question for me. The Last Of Us is more engaging on every level. I enjoyed the Uncharted series (except for 3) but they haven't aged all that well for me (except for 4). I vastly prefer the depth of TLOU. The focus on stealth, scavaging, crafting, and the more deliberate combat is way more satisfying. The story and characters are obviously more interesting in TLOU but I think the gameplay holds up a lot better as well. As evidenced by the multiplayer mode hooking me way more than any of the Uncharted multiplayer modes ever did.

Uncharted 2 by a country mile. It's my second favorite game of all time. TLOU is a great game, but I didn't enjoy playing it as I'm not a stealth fan. Actually turned on bullet time mode in TLOU2 and shot every enemy in the head immediately, looking forward to doing the same in TLOU1 remake.

Lost Legacy is what you're looking for.
lost legacy is pretty great yeah, but uncharted 2 still reigns supreme. there's a location jump or two but once Drake is in the jeep in Nepal, the entire game is now from his eyes

and nothing beats the coolness of going from the frigid Himalayas to the lush jungles of Shambala. Uncharted 3's version didn't hit as hard since it was a desert city in the desert

I also miss the weird supernatural stuff in the first two games with the el dorado zombies and guardians. Uncharted 4 did away with it but I still like that better than the hallucinogenic water in 3

maybe it's because I built up the idea that Talbot in 3 was a Djinn in my head what with the way he acts completely different when he's away from Marlow. With her, he's just a standard bad guy but when he's alone he felt nearly omnipotent with how he can just disappear and appear anywhere he wants. none of that is really explained until the writers haphazardly answered them after the game was released that he was just using "black ops techniques"

This again is why I think Uncharted 2 is the best. It was a combination of Hennig and Druckmann. When they each made their own solo Uncharted they were both mid af. Uncharted 3 was just a bunch of cool set pieces held haphazardly together by bullshit plot, and then Uncharted 4 was a retread of the same damn plot beats, just boring af, with arguably the worst composer Naughty Dog has ever worked with. It was soulless for A thief's end and incoherent for Drake's Deception.

Wow!!
that's a hard one.
2 amazing games!,
I love uncharted 2 but I have to go with the last of us.
joel and Ellie are my most beloved characters maybe in all typed of media.
And besides that, the way action is made and the way gunfight works in the last of us is pretty incredible at the time.

This just remember me how much I miss more cinematic linear action adventure games with big budget!!!
I would love if there was much more games in this style.

With subscription model becoming more popular, I would love if publishers invest more in smaller experiences ( shorter games) like this games…

They've released two games, a story DLC, a PS4 port of the first game and are about to release a PS5/PC remaster and an HBO TV show adaptation as well, all over the course of nine years.

In that same time frame, Uncharted had four main entries across two generations of consoles, a fully fledged spin-off title developed for the Vita alongside a Vita exclusive card game, a remaster collection released on PS4, a browser platformer that served as the official narrative prequel to the first game, a board game in 2012, a four issue comic run in 2009 as well as an eleven issue run in 2011 and a canonical interlude novel released in that same year. Since then, there's been another spin-off/standalone DLC entry, a mobile puzzler, a remaster of Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy for PS5 and PC and a theatrical film adaptation.

Just say you don't like The Last of Us 2 or whatever your issue is, lol.

Your reply seems to assume that different people that like a thing consume every piece of meta fiction related to it in the same way/to the same degree, which isn't the case. You then go on to compare them purely quantitatively, and also in a vacuum, which also doesn't reflect the whole picture.

I loved Uncharted 2, and dislike most of what came after(that I've played). This has not affected my love for 2.
I loved TLOU even more, and dislike what came after. Maybe I'm nostalgic for Uncharted 2 as it was further ago and/or it's a more light-hearted, breezy affair. Maybe the fact that I played TLOU1 more means fatigue set in sooner. For some reason, I can compartmentalize my feelings for Uncharted 2 from its sequels in a way that I can't for TLOU, which feels more intrinsically linked to its "Part 2".

My point is context matters, similar things can't always be compared like for like in how they affect us and sometimes our feelings just don't make a lot of sense.

If you were curious or unclear about what my reasoning was you could have just asked, instead of being weirdly accusatory.

Wait, what? This makes it sound like we've gotten a lot more TLoU games than Uncharted

Yeah I know it's a bit weird, maybe I just wanna be young again lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Last of Us, only second to Part II, and that may change with the release of Part I if it incorporates the sequel's gameplay enhancements.

I've flip flopped a lot on these game but I think The Last of Us is superior. Better combat, more interesting variety of gameplay sections, and the narrative is certainly stronger. Uncharted 2 is still a blast, but in light of ND's growth particularly last gen some of the shine has worn off its practically non-stop combat.

Damn I had no clue TLOU AI was this bad.

This was a really good video.

They already mentioned they'll change the AI in the remake, so if it's anything like TLOU2 then it's probably the biggest upgrade the game will have.

I'm a total weirdo that thought U2 was really dull but somehow loved U3? Definitely prefered TLoU1 over U2. I should replay 2 some time because I think I was just expecting too much out of it at the time.

U3 is largely built on the same blueprint as U2. To the point where set pieces are literally re-used, just "re-skinned" and even story beats (which actually is pretty poor, I thought, especially towards the end). So yeah, it is a bit strange, though the different settings utilized by both games can make a difference.

I maintain that the first half of U3 is the finest uncharted there is, but the game kinda crumbles in the 2nd half.

I absolutely loved UC2, but I think TLOU is more interesting to play these days and the latter parts are better in TLOU compared to the latter parts of UC2. Always felt once you got to the top of the snowy mountains the game lost a bit of steam.

I feel like uncharted 2 is when it all clicked for Naughty dog and they brought it all together. Kind of like the warriors during marc Jackson era. Once they unlocked it…they had it. So TLOU, but wouldn't have had that without uncharted 2.

I really do love both and have replayed both a bunch.

I think TLOU pulls away because of Left Behind and the intro I always get choked up lol and the performances.

But it's very close, love the chemistry of UC2 cast as well and the pulp adventure locations. The setpieces, action, music is still sweet. Both games are winners really
