lol, I'm usually an Elon defender on this site, he's a dumb-ass, but his technology is important to the world.

This is inexcusable though.

Im a medical student who had to work in the wards for two weeks before they kicked us out because they didnt want us to get sick.

Edit: You can suck my dick from the back twice.
First you'd need one.

It's weird watching two Musk-stans just talk between themselves in the face of all this thread's content.
Musk stans? Funny. You make something up in your head and believe it to be true. I couldn't care less about Elon. All I know is he's made an effort to help, while you most likely haven't. Shocker coming from the Era elite.

Dr. Jeff Sippel, a critical care specialist at UCHealth, based in Aurora, Colo., said BiPAPs could be used for COVID-19 in a closed system without a mask, if patients are first fitted with a breathing tube.

"The hardware actually fits," he said.

The jury-rigged devices could then be used for less severe COVID-19 patients, as well as for other patients who might not be first in line for a ventilator.

CPAP Machines Were Seen As Ventilator Alternatives, But Could Spread COVID-19

Doctors say the machine that helps some people with sleep apnea keep their airway open at night won't be enough to help an ill COVID-19 patient breathe and could spread the coronavirus to bystanders.

If you drink bleach because it contains water and Trump/Musk said water is good for you, it is not their fault.

Yeah the stuff they took had a similar name but wasn't the actual medication.

And I assume "considering" means doing trials, which are definitely happening and are being done seriously.

Holy shit. A CPAP machine basically does the opposite of what the need was here. How absurd

This is different and not all BIPAP machines can be used this way. Some are impossible to make a closed system. Some are able to be turned into ventilators. Either way these are very different machines than the CPAP machines noted in the OP

Imagine how many of these hospitals may have decreased the amount of ventilators they requested from elsewhere since they thought they were getting them from Elon.

This might end up leading to actual deaths if that happened.

You should update your ERA handle, maybe people would pay more attention to your posts. (Who am I kidding, they'll talk around them.)

Thanks for the insights in the thread btw!

I can't imagine they hospital wouldn't ask what kind of ventilators he's delivering

Are you questioning the photograph or something? It's from here, where elon pats himself on the back for a job well done

Are you questioning whether or not those are actually CPAP machines or ventilators? Because the OP shows that they're actually CPAP machines, and not ventilators.

"googling medical advice" apparently means "reading the actual FDA emergency guidance on handling ventilator shortages" which is something Elon kind of skimmed at best in this scenario.

wait a second

why is that NYC hospital twitter calling them ventilators?

they clearly opened and examined them

I'm pretty sure those aren't the closed system bipap machines you can use on intubated patients. Those are consumer grade machines though I haven't looked into these specific ones.

Google hospital grade bipap machines. They look like the image you see at the top here: https://abc11.com/what-is-ventilator-coronavirus-a-respirator/6063528/

Or midway down here: https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/ventilators-new-york-northwell-health-storage

Nobody is really using CPAP or BIPAP with these patients despite what that link says since it aerosolizes the virus and makes it far more dangerous for everyone involved. We are using HFNC, maybe a non-rebreather or intubating. There may be few instances where they are used but they require a negative pressure room to use. We are not lacking in CPAP machines.

EDIT:

fyi I am a physician taking care of COVID patients.
Thank you for your continuous hardwork! Stay well

From all the anecdotal things I've heard from people working in the hospitals CPAP is not a good alternative if someone needs a ventilator. This is not to mention the fact that there is not a severe shortage of these things so how does this actually help. Those machines will be given to patients that need a CPAP so in the end it will help someone

i never thought about this, but does this mean i'm going to have an issue ordering my next shipment of tubing for my CPAP? is CPAP stuff going to be hard to come by?

If you do need it, try to call in for it as soon as you need to because there are delays in some places. My cousin's supplier said there was like a 2 week back up. Not the end of the world if you can use your old tubing for a few more weeks, but be aware.

I always laugh when people use the "bitch eating crackers" thing to defend poor little Elon Musk. The dude is an asshat and could afford to supply large swathes of the country with ventilators at the snap of his fingers but he threw a million dollars at CPAPs for the photo op. Yes, he occasionally does some really good things. He can still be a piece of shit and still deserve all the skepticism (which ironically enough he seems to think is a quality that makes you really really smart based on his response to Coronavirus at times in GENERAL) he gets even with those things.

Where are you seeing the $50k price? I may have missed it.

Regardless, ventilators are typically significantly more expensive. 2x to 10x, maybe? Could be that it's $50k because of low supply somewhere and some site fleecing people who need it.
Somewhere in those twitter posts, the EVent Horizon account wrote that the same anount of money ($1M) could have bought about 20 real ventilators, quoting this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/lisett...-states-compete-for-the-devices/#45d9882478b3
twitter.com

The Final Straw on Twitter

“That same $1,000,000 would buy as few as 20 actual invasive ventilators. https://t.co/pvdsZaVUCF”

This is a bad analogy because water is mostly harmless (yeah I know people can die from excess) whereas promoting a drug that can have serious side effects or become in short supply for those that actually need it is irresponsible.

The poster you're attacking made more of an effort to help by working the wards for 2 weeks before having to leave.
