So, is there basically any realistic hope that the polls were wrong? Right now it still looks like labour is ahead but I have a hard time keeping up

New Yawk City!
Has there been any positives for Labour so far tonight?

Slightly pointed question, but this is fucking awful.

Labour is likelier to tighten its grip on larger English cities and the outer ring of London, which was sometimes more comfortable with Conservatives in the past. Large urban remain areas might be better for the party than much of England.

But, with the winner-take-all system, the rise of nationalist parties especially outside of England, and the center-to-left split giving elections to the right, well... not much good news.

you can see the contours of the argument that's raging in labour - pro-corbyn mp's claiming it was down to the remain position, anti-corbyn mp's claiming it was down to corbyn's leadership and overtly radical manifesto

they are both right but aren't listening to each other. only gareth snell and kate hoey, two of my least fav mp's, have it right tbh.

Can Scottish independence through the EU approval while iginoring England even realistically happen? I'd imagine Spain would knock the idea down since it could be seen as giving approval to Catalonian independence. That doesn't even consider the economic and military response from England.

No, legal separation is needed.

It will happen given how this Union is going.

We did it again, we somehow forgot just how racist and fucking backward large portions of this country are. Its a clear victory for fascism. Buckle the next few decades are gonna be wild.

Northerners like socialist policies. They just don't like brown people.

I can guarantee most of them liked Corbyn's policies in isolation, but because he is perceived to be fond of Muslims and weak on immigration they would never vote for Labour any more.

For Labour to have any relevance in the North in the future, their leader needs to be a young charismatic man espousing strong socialist policies for the British people, while adopting a hard-line approach to immigration. I come from Stoke, Brexit was a vote on immigration. Full stop.

Basically: the country is full of morons and is fucked.
I hate to say so but I agree with this. WIth every ardent Brexit voter I have encountered there has been an undercurrent of this. Whenever someone starts mentioning Hamas or Iran or something, my ears prick up - because you immediately sense the underlying prejudice at work. You always hear narratives around immigration and very telling comments about Islam - in the worst case comments, you get people banging on with the usual Tommy Robinson lines - child grooming sex gangs, loads of these people are terrorism obsessed - they basically have a hate-on for "pakis" and muslims. The channel 4 footage last week in the North East where they went undercover with the Brexit party underscores that for me as well. In a lot of cases - these are racists made legitimate.

Of course, I'm not saying all Brexiteers are like that, just the ones I have routinely encountered. Even the ones who aren't overtly racist, they have been convinced that 'uncontrolled' immigration is behind employment problems, behind the strain on the NHS. Its all bollocks. The government has always had the power to control immigration, it simply hasn't been in the nations interest to do so. And it didn't seem to matter to people that the groups they have a high degree of prejudice for, often haven't come from Europe. They've bought the argument, they're not going to be dissuaded. It is truly truly ugly.

That ugliness has coalesced around the toxic Brexit vote, and it has become their lightning rod. So much so that they have dismissed basically all of the manifestos and gaffes committed throughout this campaign. They just want it done, hell or high water, fuck whatever else comes attached. Its sad, and shows a real lack of capability in the electorate to consider more than one issue.

I am starting to feel as though there was never a path to victory for Labour tonight. Ian Lavery is talking about how voters have seen Labour as a Remain party, but had Labour come out in favour of Leave I am almost certain they would have lost more metropolitcan votes. Even though I understand the feeling that winning here should have been easy -- not with this electorate I'm afraid. Labour could not win in these circumstances.

I genuinely feel sorry for any migrants in this country right now. They must feel so unwelcome.

Welsh letting us down too
Welsh are a lost cause. Tories fucked them for decades, EU tried to inject money for retraining and rejuvenation, but because that money didn't magic up old blue collar jobs I guess it's time to vote Tories???

The metropolitan, diverse, young, progressive, educated parts of this country are going to continue to win while the rest of the country keeps pressing the self destruct button.
Really is the truth. For as bad as this is, London will be fine, while the rest of England who largely loath London will be on the receiving end of what they just voted for.

Alliance won North Down, great!

Looking like a decent election for Northern Ireland and Scotland, but an utter mess in England and Wales.
